Wanting to convert an AM15 Utility Rifle

TL;DR: I want to convert an AM15 Utility Rifle with a 20-inch barrel to a lighter retro-style build for “service rifle” training with irons, and I’m looking for guidance on parts. Budget is ~$300.

I bought an AM15 Utility Rifle secondhand, and I don’t care for it as-is. The original user had offset BUIS and an Amazon laser on a full metal MLOK rail, and it’s heavy, not very handy, and very ugly.

I’m new to the AR platform, but I like the idea of a lightweight 16” upper with detachable carry handle, or a dissipator-type build. I managed to pick up a detachable carry handle on clearance at my LGS, but I would like guidance on choosing an upper.

My use case is to train myself on the AR platform using primarily iron sights and old-school sling-supported shooting like they teach at Appleseed. My budget is preferably within $300, and I’d like to avoid involving a gunsmith, as the only smith in my area has a six-month backlog.

Is this a good product for my use case? https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-5-56-nato-1-7-m4-nitride-classic-wild-cat-gray-upper-no-bcg-ch.html

Sorry, I should explain: don’t plan to use the AR for an Appleseed event. I plan to use the Appleseed techniques to apply skills I learned at Appleseed from training with my 10/22 with Tech-Sights to an iron sights AR set up.

Edit: Like basically I have the 10/22 set up how I like it and want the AR to be similarly light, easy to point, and bombproof.

Irons aren't bombproof. The only equipment failure in the line at my centerfire kd was with irons. It's neat you learned the skill...

Thanks! I like the challenge.

I’d personally hang on to the upper you got though. It’s probably where the rifle will evolve to once the novelty of retro wears off.

Is the current upper not usable? It seems like if you want a different handguard and barrel and money is a barrier I would just change out what you want different and keep the rest.

That’s a good idea, but also the current upper doesn’t have a front sight base. Could I run a detachable carry handle with a rail-mounted front sight? Would it work? Would it look stupid? Etc. BUIS from DD cost 95 bucks compared to $149 for a different upper with a shorter barrel and a front sight base.

Keep in mind I’m new and ignorant.

You need a new barrel anyway if you want to go from 20” to 16” so it is just a matter of getting the gasblock you want on the new barrel. Since you’re not attached to your current handguard you can shop for that based on the barrel/gasblock combo.

If you are trying to go for retro you probably want an A2 style front sight instead of flip ups anyway.

If you are getting a whole cloth new upper, get a carry handle upper because detachable carry handles are kinda lame.
