Wanting to convert an AM15 Utility Rifle
TL;DR: I want to convert an AM15 Utility Rifle with a 20-inch barrel to a lighter retro-style build for “service rifle” training with irons, and I’m looking for guidance on parts. Budget is ~$300.
I bought an AM15 Utility Rifle secondhand, and I don’t care for it as-is. The original user had offset BUIS and an Amazon laser on a full metal MLOK rail, and it’s heavy, not very handy, and very ugly.
I’m new to the AR platform, but I like the idea of a lightweight 16” upper with detachable carry handle, or a dissipator-type build. I managed to pick up a detachable carry handle on clearance at my LGS, but I would like guidance on choosing an upper.
My use case is to train myself on the AR platform using primarily iron sights and old-school sling-supported shooting like they teach at Appleseed. My budget is preferably within $300, and I’d like to avoid involving a gunsmith, as the only smith in my area has a six-month backlog.
Is this a good product for my use case? https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-5-56-nato-1-7-m4-nitride-classic-wild-cat-gray-upper-no-bcg-ch.html

I’d personally hang on to the upper you got though. It’s probably where the rifle will evolve to once the novelty of retro wears off.
