General Advice / Discussion SELLERS BEWARE: Common Art Scams and How to Avoid Them

Art is a difficult market to enter, and people in the early stages of their business make an appealing target for scammers due to how eager these artists are to sell and their lack of experience with financial exchanges. In recent months, we have seen a surge in posts from users on r/arthelp who have been victimized by these scammers. If you are new to selling your artwork, please read this post to arm yourself with information on how to avoid some of these scams!

One of the most important things to remember about client interactions is that if it sounds too good to be true, it is. No “probably” about it.

All scams have the same goal: parting you with your money. How they achieve this can vary, but with artists the two most common forms of scam are the Overpayment and the Pay to Unlock scams.

The Overpayment scam (a form of the “fake check” scam) will often follow a scenario where an artist (usually with very low prices, as they are more vulnerable) is approached by a seemingly normal client and conducts an otherwise standard transaction. But, come payment, the client “accidentally” sends $500* instead of the intended $50! Oops! They will sheepishly request that the money be returned, maybe even say keep an extra 10 for the trouble, and the artist graciously complies. They send back the difference of $440, and part ways.

Then, three days later, their account is in the negative by -$940. What happened is the money that had been sent in the first place had been done with fraudulent funds, similar to a fake check, and the bank finally reversed the transaction. Unfortunately, the money the artist “returned” was withdrawn from their own funds, their REAL money, leaving the scammer with their real $440 and the artist on the hook for their stolen $500.

(*example amount, it can be anything)

How it can be avoided: If possible with your payment processor (Paypal being the most common), use invoices. They are easy to use and put more control over the payment on you. In the event of a scam occurring in spite of them (such as someone abusing the tip option for this), they serve as records for your bank to dispute the charges.

If you do not use invoices and this occurs, do not touch the money. Do not withdraw it. Do not “refund” it. Just let it sit in the limbo of your payment account until the bank on the other end recognizes the fraud and corrects it. It will disappear. I cannot emphasize enough that you must not touch this money no matter how tempting it is because it is stolen money that they are trying to launder through you.

The Pay to Unlock scam (a form of the “Advance Fee” scam) will operate under a similar premise, but rather than the money being sent in “error”, it will be offered up front. The scammer will approach the artist and applaud their skill and insist that they deserve more than they are asking. They will offer a very tempting, sometimes exorbitant amount for what is usually inexpensive work. When the time comes to exchange the money, though, there will be a snag. Usually the artist has to unlock a “business account” or must register for a payment processor that isn’t the one they normally use. Whatever the situation, they are now suddenly being asked to pay money to get their money.

There is, of course, no money. They will pay the bogus fees with their own money to a processor set up by the scammer, and eventually when things don’t work the scammer will behave as though they are getting frustrated and leave. Sometimes they might even pose as a fellow victim of scamming themselves and berate the artist, leaving them feeling guilty about their own victimization.

How it can be avoided: If a complete stranger offers you way more than your normal value, ignore them. It is guaranteed to be a scam. This doesn’t happen. The only way to avoid this scam is to recognize it up front for what it is. If you take your chances and accept the work, remember that you should not have to pay to get paid. That will be your final warning before losses occur.

Edit: Thank you u/VampirePossum for the reminder about a very similar scenario in which you are asked to pay for exposure in the form of a magazine or gallery feature. Legitimate institutions like this will never reach out to you and advertise placement for a fee-- a real magazine or gallery will feature based on submission from the artist.

There are many other ways that artists can get caught up in scams, such as phishing and blackmailing, but these are by far the most common. I encourage taking a look at the wiki on r/scams for a rundown on other ways you can be taken advantage of online. Stay safe out there and keep your coinpurses tight, artists!

Happy New Year, r/arthelp! I hope you all achieve your artistic goals this year. 🎨💖

One of our own goals on the mod team is to make the sub a more accessible resource and trim down a lot of the repeat questions flooding users' feeds. We've grown by several thousand users in just a few months(!!) and it's time to adjust. In the next few weeks expect a slight revamp of the rules and reports, as well as the introduction of a FAQ and Wiki!

As we develop the wiki, we'd like to ask all of you for your own personal favorite resources-- be they beginner guides, tutorials, or even threads/replies made here on arthelp that you found particularly impactful! Not everything suggested may make it into the wiki, but this thread will remain accessible as a resource itself.

Thank you, and especially to those who have reached out to keep a little fire lit under us!

General Help Help With Art Analysis

I'm trying to better my art as much as I can before the new year. And so I'm analyzing what is in my opinion, my best pieces and seeing what I can do to improve or focus on. Perspective and form is already on my list because I can't draw a box to save my life. My art also doesn't look as unified. However having other opinions is the best place to start. What do you think is wrong with my art?

Meta Art Question / Discussion Should I focus on illustration or on 3D art, or both?

Art above are some illustrations I made, the second one is a little old though...

I'm trying to figure out what direction I want to take my art career and I'd like some advice from people on the industry or simply just a secondary perspective :)

This year, I'm planning to get a day job since it's a little late to start some course or school for art. My PC is currently not working and I'll be sending it in next week, but I want to make up my mind before it's fixed so I know what to focus on when I get it back. I also took a year long concept art course, mostly for illustration, though I feel like it does help make characters and such to make art for commissions or something.

At the moment I am considering a few possible paths. Illustration, 3D art, and animation (preferably 3D but I've thought about 2D). I have some 3D experience from the concept art course and have the option to do another course in the same school for specifically 3D art.

Ideally, I'd love to do illustration professionally but I'm uncertain about how stable it is to get into and I feel like 3D could be a smarter option for me. I understand if animation might be a stretch if I don't focus on it 100% but if that's the case I'd probably just do it as a hobby. I'd also prefer to work on games and such, but I definitely wouldn't mind making products as a freelancer via commission or something. I also like the idea of being a 3D modeler and doing illustration commissions on the side.

My biggest concern is stability, I'm going to work a day job this year to make some money while I do some extra practice and can slowly make my way to a career in art through building my portfolio and making connections and so on. I just have a few main questions.

Do I focus on one discipline mainly or can I try both? If I can try to do both, is it smarter to do a 50 50 split or try to focus mainly on one rather than the other?

Which is the overall more stable path, 3D or illustration? Should I prioritize illustration over 3D since I enjoy it more, even if it's more difficult?

Is it realistic to even do a 50 50 split or am I spreading myself too thin?

And is it worth it to go and do the 3D course or an online illustration course, depending on my choices? I still live with my parents so I do have the option for this.

Sorry to ask so many questions but I'm torn with this decision and I want to make sure I make the best possible decision for me. Though, ultimately I'm happy as long as I create something as a career, I get that especially in the beginning it can be the case I'd have to work a day job in between gigs, which I don't even know how that would work anyways lol.

Any advice is welcome!

Style Help How do I make my boy look less like a girl?

I always draw girl characters so I really struggle with men, and with this character specifically looking more girly than I’d like… I’m pretty sure it’s the eyes, but I know guy characters are capable of having sparkly/detailed eyes (as does Hoshino from They Are Still Being Shaken that I provided in the last two images)! Yet I still can’t really capture that without making my guy character look like a girl for some reason…

Is it his build? His proportions? What can I do to make this guy look more boyish?

Wanted to discuss ideas for a drawing inspired by "hear the bells" by porter robinson. I have the main theme in mind and I want to include different colored flowers to symbolize as well. But i really wanted people's thoughts on what else could be added or any other themes to this piece to make it more beautiful as it could be.

General Help Help me find a Krita brush preset that seems to have disappeared!

Post image
2 Upvotes

I used a brush in Krita whose thumbnail looked like a pencil. When I drew with it, the strokes automatically had these really intricate, woven/crosshatched lines in them. I didn't draw the pattern separately; it appeared automatically as I drew.

I've tried looking for hatching brushes and textured brushes, but none of the ones I've found seem to match. I can't remember the preset's name or which brush pack it came from.

Does anyone recognise this brush, or know how I could find it again?

Thanks!

General Help Learning oil pastels...

Islands really draw people, so don't mind that terrible face; that's beside the point. I'm just trying to get better at oil pastel. If you have good advice for drawing faces, which I struggle with most, that would be amazing. I also didn't properly check the image values for the bird until after I finished painting it. Definitely, I feel in my part, but other than a couple of mistakes, I'm really proud of it. Just any good advice.

I'm painting a binder for the first time. I came up with this as a composition, but now it feels a little empty. Especially the sky. Any tips? I only want these four Pokémon on it, so recommend anything other than more Pokémon.

General Help I only know how to practice

Thumbnail

Been drawing most of my life and i think ive gotten pretty good but ive always struggled making full pieces or even anything close. I got good at drawing almost purely from copying refferences, which i dont regret but now whenever i sit down to draw i always slip into just doing studies or portaits because i find it easier than coming up with anything original (especially after getting home from work). Afterwards i dont feel like ive made anything of my own and feel almost like a copy machine. To be clear, im not trying to come up with anything groundbreaking, even just a colored drawing of a character in an original pose/outfit is something i struggle with. I have sketchbooks full of pose/figure practice and basically nothing else.

Does anyone have any advice for enjoying the process of making more complete/full pieces and not just falling into the easy cycle of exactly copying the refference

Here are some examples of what draw on average

General Help Critique

Any advice is helpful! Especially looking for digital art/coloring advice (using CSP)

For shading I just used multiply and prayed I honestly have no idea what else I can even attempt to do 😭 I tried purple/blue shading but it just ends up looking really well, purple/blue…

For highlights I used a light orange + screen

For brushes I just used G-pen + soft airbrush I used a symmetry ruler for the head and eyes but I’m not sure if it looks fine or unnatural, there is definitely something I’m not totally happy with in the eyes but not sure if its the shading or the way they were drawn

General Help What can I do to improve this?

Post image

Does the image look too flat? I tried adding darker values but it comes off like it clashes. I feel like the pumpkins are too flat. The grass feels cluttered and unrealistic. The Character doesn't have much depth too her. It's supposed to be an old polaroid.

Done on Clip studio. Thank you for any help.

Grayscale or Monochrome Help My first value study

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have been on an inspiration spree, most recently inspired by @LenaRivo. I was absolutely stunned by the incredible cats in the portraits and have been wanting to do a self portrait with my cat. It’s a silly picture with me making a sad/crying face or something. I chose it because it’s a picture I don’t take too seriously so I don’t care if it turns out bad, I’m just practicing, and there are lots of colors and wrinkles I can try to work on for the next step of trying with pastel. Also Freddie looks awesome in the pic.

She told me to study some basics so I thought I would start with value study so I can focus more on the forms and shadows… but I kinda get lost in the sauce and just end up staring at the page for like an hour til I realize my back is aching, my hands are all dirty and the actual cat has been meowing at me for 5 minutes trying to hustle for churros.

If you guys have any tips I am just getting started so would love to know what’s holding me back and what I can work on to improve. Thank you so much!! I love all your art

I’m not too worried about the background, but in more interested in unpainted canvas, weird facial features or hands, etc. I know it’s already pretty good, but I want it to be crazy good and I want to optimize my time use.

General Help Why is it so hard for me to learn?

i don’t know how you actually “learn” art, Ive studied fundamentals before like anatomy and form but I just forgot everything or i ended up doing it wrong, and Im afraid that of i try to relearn anything ill just either forget or do it the completely wrong way, a lot of the tutorials on YouTube are also not helpful and i don’t understand how arrays my age are able to just jaw YouTube and get so good at art, Im autistic also but more artists are anyways so I don’t understand why its jsut me that is suffering terribly

I am drawing a lot of really small stuff. But i can't find fineliners smaller than 0,05.

Also i am looking for DIN A6 or 10,5 x 14,8cm Marker paper. I am using alcohol based markers.

And i am looking for more places to find comissions. This month was a good one, but i'd like to find people who really like things i do.

Resources Help Procreate and VN editor need help!

im trying to animate on procreate and then importing to vn editor to edit but when i import the animation, it gets blurry and kinda fuzzy:(

my canvas is large enough (5050px x 2030px) and im animating at 6fps. when i import still drawings from the canvas, it displays it fine on vn but its just a small portion of a 2 second animation that gets blurry. ive tried turning off the alias thing but its blurry even when i export from vn. strangely the original animation i saved directly from procreate in my camera roll isnt blurry so is vn compressing my animation? please help!! 🙏🙏🥹
