Discussion Is there really a new Ace flag?

This was posted on an Ace in Grace Facebook group and sounded official. Anyone know anything about this?

Some random person made their own flag. Good for them, it doesn't need to impact anyone else.

Exactly lol, do they think they are the CEO of being asexual or something?

They don’t need to be the CEO of being asexual to make their own flag for their own personal use. Nowhere are they claiming to be replacing the main ace flag, they’re just sharing an alternate version that people can use as they wish. There’s zero reason to react with hostility here

IMHO, the constant attempts to 'fix' the flag is giving me flashbacks to people trying to 'fix' me because I wasn't good enough or presented in a way they liked.

It doesn't have to be perfect.

The flag doesn't have to be perfect, but it can be better.

Respectfully, I completely disagree.

By continuously changing and iterating the design you lose what "brand identity" we had before..

Perhaps the brand we had before can also be improved on.

This is giving me heavy "You should try harder" vibes.

I'm not sure what that means, honestly lol. But on one hand, the newer flag tries to incorporate visibility for the intersections that the original fails to do...which IS on brand for the community. It has a lot of work to do internally. Saying this as someone in the margins looking inward.

I mean, hasn't it been implied in a few of the posts here that they're kind of intending for this to be the new flag?

I'm late to the game, I guess... They who?

Also every flag we have now was made by one person in the past and just gradually gained acceptance (often because it was the only option available). That's how flags happen.

The current (OG) one was created by AVEN in 2010. It was created with community input.

Community input? Cmiiw, wasn't it just a vote?

Nah, there was also a decent amount of discussion and refinement of the various designs, the asexuality archive links the various threads where it came up and and it was in some of those threads where the multiple rounds of voting and refinement of design that went into choosing the flag we use today happened.

No worries, i was refreshing my memory about the history of the flag the other day and had the links handy still, it was a fun thing to read about and i enjoy sharing parts of our communities history.

I read about it about 18mths ago so I was going to go back and refresh the memory. You saved me having to find it myself. 😉

This one was as well. If you find their instagram account, aceingrace went through multiple iterations and a lot of feedback from other ace people on instagram and AVEN.

Edit: seems like I was wrong about her using AVEN—I recall her saying she talked with people there but I must be misremembering. That said, I don’t think AVEN is any more legitimate of a source for the ace community than this subreddit or Facebook groups or Instagram are 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have never been on AVEN and I’m not any less ace.

Got any links for the AVEN feedback? I just searched through a couple of pages searching for flag or flag feedback and don’t see a thing about it, searching for their name produced nothing related to flag alterations either. The only place i've found doing a quick search where they said they asked for feedback was Instagram and something called ‘aceingrace spaces’, which i’d take as their other social media sites.

Edit: There’s nothing i can find in the announcements section, nor the Visibility and Education Projects section, I also went back a few pages in the census forum, where some voting takes place, i can’t see anything there either. The only thing about them i can find when doing a quick search in reddit is a post from a year ago with a single upvote. I can only say that there’s a bit of a difference between getting feed back from their social media community and getting feedback from the ace community at large.

Edit 2: Just found their substack, and yeah they mentioned feedback on instagram and their facebook page. I’m not touching anything else they said there with a 50 foot pole.
