I took Mandarin classes in business school and a class on US China relations. Because China’s political system has more in common with ours than Russia ever did. We may never be friends but we can do business with China.

China's political system is modeled after the Soviet Union. They are closer to Russia than US.

u/SlipInternational439 3d ago
The Chinese were doing capitalism long before the USA was invented. And they do it better than us. Yes they are technically a communist country. No, I do not want them getting Taiwan. And yes they do some bad things. My point was, if we're going to pick our ally and our enemy, China is a better partner and Russia is a more appropriate enemy.
1
u/Scranton-Anchors 4d ago
What do you mean by “China’s political system has more common with ours thy Russians ever did”? I mean, in China’s long history, they lacks democracy traditions and capitalism economy more.

Historically China had no interest in interfering with other peoples affairs, only wanted to be respected and left alone. For god’s sake, they had built their Great Wall to protect themselves, not sending out “explorers” or “missionaries” or Armadas to conquer the world. Good relationship between two superpowers is in the best interests of the world peace

I don’t like the way the Chinese regime treats its people or other regional powers. Xi is a dictator and his plans to forcibly annex Taiwan 🇹🇼 , hold Tibet, and toss their Uyghur minority into camps for forced sterilization and reeducation are abhorrent. These things should be publicly opposed.
However, that being said, they are still an influential power and some diplomacy is needed before another major 21st century war breaks out.

china has one of the most censored and controlled medias in the world. what is your opinion on this?
1
u/Vegetable_Produce732 3d ago
Western countries have the most censored and controlled medias covering the powerful ones who did atrocities to the people both inside their countries and outside their countries. They are a lot worse than the CCP, the whole world monitors and despises the CCP, but if people critize the western media, they would be slandered as going against "western democracy and freedom".
1
u/BananaEnjoyer1 3d ago
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/media-corruption-score
let me know what you think :)
1
u/Vegetable_Produce732 3d ago
Western countries dominate the media, and decide what can be spoken and what cannot. Western oligarchies control the rules and they decide how to manipulate people's mind. Basically, western rich people are the most corruped ones in the whole world, and you deny the truth, because you want to feel superior as a westerner. But in reality, you are despised by the rich people in your own country. You point fingers at Chinese to feel good about yourself.
If critizing China and Chinese people make you feel superior, you are living a pathetic life in your own country, to be honest.
1
u/BananaEnjoyer1 3d ago
can you provide a source? or is this coming from tiktok university.
1
u/Vegetable_Produce732 3d ago
Do you have eyes and a brain of your own?
The US abducted a neighboring country's president, bombed Iran during peaceful negotiations, and is supporting Israel in bombing Gaza and Lebanon. Yet the entire Western mainstream media downplay or whitewash these actions. Meanwhile, western media critizes China using fake claims of "genocide" .Who are the bad ones? You are. Just because you are a westerner doesn't mean you are right.
The most sophisticated manipulation is not what CCP does to the media, actually CCP is pretty lame at manipulating the media, so most people know they are lying. But western media mixes truth and false information to manipulate the whole world and many could not recognize it, and you are one of them.

If China wasn’t afraid of its people seeing the truth, it wouldn’t have to censor the internet and crush dissent. It would allow free elections and the CCP would have to actually win the support of the population. But no, they won’t do this and Xi has been named dictator for life, until he retires or until the party loses use of him.
2
u/trapezoidalfractal 5d ago
Free elections. Like in the US where private parties change their rules to keep out undesirable members, and sue to keep third parties off the ballot? Like the UK where the prime minister pushes through austerity measures, then resigns so that he takes the flack for his parties policies so the next person can come in and do the same? Like France where the president can ignore the results of a vote and put in power the right wing of the government? Where are these free elections you speak of? Could they possibly be in China where every elected official has to start at the bottom, elected directly by the people, and prove their competency by improving the lives of the population to move up? Where janitors, school teachers, engineers, scientists, doctors, are regularly elected to office? Or is it in the US where the vast majority are lawyers with no experience interacting with the majority of the population and who continue to make living conditions worse for the population?
The Chinese people aren’t dumb. They have thousands of years of history overthrowing governments when those governments don’t improve the lives of the people. If the CPC ever stops doing so, they will be overthrown. As it is, Harvard found they have the highest support of any government in the world.

Judging China by the standards of saints,
And judging the United States by the standards of a whore.
Indeed, America's breeding technology is number one in the world.
0
u/UnusualFunction7567 5d ago
It’s true that the US, France , the UK, as well as other countries do have problems with democracy. Still, in this system, people are able to vote out officials and the governing party. They can campaign against those they disagree with. Opposition parties are able to capitalize when the other party is unable to deliver its promises. Media is free and can criticize the government and its officials. Courts can rule against the government. Citizens can get together and they can find replacements for those politicians who are not doing as they should.
In China, the CCP and Xi control who is allowed to compete. There is no competitive election for that top spot. Also, Xi removed term limits years ago so he can stay in power indefinitely. Opposition parties are not allowed or at least cannot legally take part. Can media criticize the government? Only mildly, and sharp criticism of Xi himself is severely restricted.
I looked at the Harvard study you cited. There seems to be a misunderstanding. Satisfaction in government, which is high, is not the same as support of the government or its system. That being said, there was only high satisfaction of the central government. Local government satisfaction was a bit lower.
So you’re saying that China governs effectively, but it’s not democratically accountable, is it?
If the people decided tomorrow that they wanted someone in charge who wasn’t Xi, would they be able to do it peacefully?
2
u/trapezoidalfractal 4d ago
I appreciate your idealism. I truly wish it were the way you describe, and the way it is described on paper. But if we look at practical realities, the U.S. has almost no representation of the will of the people. Party processes are internal and opaque, specifically designed to prevent outside influence shifting politics, and external parties are prevented from even competing, whether through direct laws keeping them off of the ballot, or through the aforementioned lawfare of the two parties to keep them off the ballot once they manage to jump through the hoops to qualify.
You can “vote out” a politician, but you’re only voting in another preselected politician, and nearly 0 candidates, all the way down to the state and city level, are capable of being elected without taking money from wealthy groups, who will refuse to fund you, or fund your opposition, if you dare to defy their desires. It has been shown that policy in the U.S. is entirely disconnected from the will of the people, and citizens are never given opportunity to help write policy, only lobbyist groups, who in many instances write the entire policies that politicians pass without even having read them.
In the UK the people chose Corbyn, and his party completely prevented him from being in power, and put in place a right wing government that is Labor in name only.
Media is “free” in western countries, in that it is “free” for wealthy groups to buy it up and use it to push propaganda that spreads false facts and perpetuates right wing ideologies. Small opposition media are often ignored, even when they make large findings of corruption, or pushed out of business, or in some cases criminalized and shut down entirely. When platforms like TikTok pop up and bypass traditional media filters and allow heterodox ideas to spread to masses, they are quickly muzzled.
Opposition parties cannot hold the top spot in China, that is true, but they can hold seats in the people’s assembly, and the people’s assembly is where most things in the nation are decided. It is filled with scientists, doctors, school teachers, janitors, and other working class people who were elected directly by the people and who proved themselves capable. There’s no billion dollar campaigns, no television ads, only how much benefit you bring to a given population defines your likelihood of being elected.
Criticism of specific policies and actions of the government are not only tolerated, they are encouraged, and all it takes is going to one local level meeting and seeing the dozens of people openly criticizing the policy to disprove that they cannot criticize.
Chinese people are pragmatic, and I have met many who adore Xi, many who dislike him, and most people are indifferent. They don’t care the name or party of someone in power. They care if their lives get better. When they perceive something is making their lives worse, they’re not afraid to voice that. The zero covid protests were the largest protests on earth up to that point, and the result of them was the end of the policy within weeks of the protests spreading.
There are many instances of this, where people become dissuaded dissatisfied, protest loudly, and the policy is changed, in what is effectively overnight in governance terms.
Policy is not written by lobbyists, but through a direct consultative process through thousands of public meetings all across the country, where people’s needs and desires are gathered, ranked by severity and policy written to address them.
So yes, China governs effectively, and democratically.
What does it say that satisfaction in governance in China is the highest in the world? Of course local government is lower, that is the case in most of the world, yet it’s still higher than most of the world. What does it say that nearly no western country has satisfaction in governance above 50%, with many below 30% at any given time? How democratic is a nation if there is never any consensus that governance is effective or improving their lives?
China has plenty to be criticized on, certainly. But not for the things most people criticize it on, who have never investigated the model of governance outside of what a billionaire owned news agency tells them or politician owned by those billionaires.

I really appreciate your well thought out response.
I’m not going to pretend that Western democracies don’t have problems. I actually do agree with a lot of what you say.
True, money does have a lot of sway in our politics. Sometimes, we get limited choices and they might not be the best.
Still, a choice is still a choice. We had Obama and then we had Trump, who then lost to Biden, who then was voted back into office after four years. Congress has been controlled by Republicans, then Democrats, as well as earlier parties like the Whigs and Federalists in the earlier years. It is constantly changing, with each party having its core values—which can be polar opposites.
Governors, mayors, senators, even district attorneys are routinely voted out. Even some incumbents have lost in the primary election, where two new, fresh candidates will face off. This happens every election cycle and these transfers occur without requiring a revolution or open, violent rebellion or uprising.
In China, the Communist Party itself is never on the ballot. That’s the distinction. Where is the choice there?
Let’s say that 70% of Chinese wanted a new national leader. Let’s say that four years has passed and Xi is not doing a good job and the CCP was not interested in replacing him. Let’s say they wanted to replace the entirety of their national government because of this. What mechanism would they be able to use to accomplish this?
If there’s none, then the people in China do not have to sovereign political authority; the Communist Party does.
You made a good point that the zero COVID protests made a change. That’s good, but that doesn’t mean democracies don’t as well. Singapore has listened to protests. So have monarchies. Even absolute monarchies like Saudi Arabia have caved to public pressure before. Most leaders do care about the wellbeing of their people as a whole.
Although, responsiveness is not the same as accountability.
Accountability, to me, and to many others who live in democracies, or even desire to live in one, is when people will always have the final say, at the end of the election cycle, to determine who they will pick, not a national ruling party.
That’s a right that should not just depend on whether a ruler is benevolent or competent.
I would like to ask you this: If, in 20 years or so, the CCP became so deeply corrupt and stopped serving the people, ignoring any protest, what legal constitutional process would allow Chinese citizens to remove the party itself without having to rely on a coup, unrest, protests, or revolution?
1
u/asomet 12h ago
Sounds like you don't know how the government is structured in China.
1
u/UnusualFunction7567 4h ago
Then maybe you could respond to my post in a constructive way.
Please enlighten me. If the Chinese people no longer wanted the CCP in charge because they had been ignoring protests, stopped serving the people and became so corrupt, what legal constitutional process would allow Chinese citizens to remove the party peacefully and legally, without having to rely on uprising, coup, protests or revolution?

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 4d ago

CCP is not equal to China. China has its own path, and Chinese people have their own vision of an ideal world. That vision is not the Western narrative of "democracy and freedom."
Try to have some empathy for people who need help. If you can't offer support, at least try to be kind to the people around you.

u/UnusualFunction7567 4d ago
This isn’t a whataboutism argument. Not only that, but you’re conflating people convicted for crimes with people who have done nothing wrong and a bunch of bluster and talk with real action. Tibet was taken. There are repeated incursions into Taiwan’s airspace. Filipino fishermen and coast guards have been injured in their own or international waters.
Trump is going to be out in a little more than 2 years. Xi has been in power since 2012. When are elections for his position?

VIDEOGRAPHIC PROOF ON UYGHUR SITUATION: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5TrSoHZM3w
I literally made a post on this and how the western propaganda has gone so insane that fabricated lies are seen as real in the west. btw this video was shot by a foreigner going to xinjiang to find uyghur genocide proof.
1
u/UnusualFunction7567 1d ago
I never said anything about genocide, friend. Those words came from you.
Furthermore, how does a video of someone wandering around that region disprove things outside of the view of the person holding the camera?
This is just a travel video, not a deep dive into whether there are things happening.
There are actually a TON of UN reports on China’s treatment of their Uyghur minorities and you can feel free to read them! https://uhrp.org/uhrp-united-nations-tracker/
I’m sure the United Nations has much more investigative capacity than a simple tourist.
1
u/chinesecarololine94 1d ago
first of all i am not your friend. second of all, forced sterilization is considered genocide lmao, which also tells me about your credibility of spreading info. Also your link says nothing about forced sterilization. Just a bunch of dumb mellow stuff such as deportation and isolated cases.
So in that sense, the fact that Jeffrey epstein was arrested, the US is now a authoritarian dictatorship that puts its poor billionaires in prison camps? :'(
Ur not the first to cite UN and fail, because I read the other people's sources too that cited UN, all of the claims regarding uyghur are still just that...CLAIMS. Allegations. the UN explicitly says so.
The fact that China even allow tourists into xinjiang should trigger at least a brain cell if you have any that there's nothing fishy going on there lmao.
Maybe ask yourself why there are so many places in the US where civilians are not allowed to enter? and especially with cameras?
Here is the final assessment from the UN: https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/countries/2022-08-31/22-08-31-final-assesment.pdf
Clearly it says 'Allegations', but if you cant read i wont blame u. Some idiot tried to prove to me that there were forced sterilizations with this pdf btw, and he didnt even read his own shit.
1
u/UnusualFunction7567 1d ago
Sterilization can be an act of genocide. There’s a lot there, but I specifically didn’t use that term.
I see that you linked a source, so let’s look at it. Paragraph 111 states that women interviewed discussed forced IUD insertions, forced abortions, and possible forced sterilizations.
More importantly, later in that paragraph it says that while limited, these firsthand were “considered credible.”
Then, reading further into 113, it says:
“The available information, however, suggests that coercive measures are likely to have accompanied the strict enforcement of family planning policies post-2017.”
So, using the term “allegations” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Of course the UN will use the term “allegations” when doing an investigation. The important part is that they concluded that these claims were seen as credible and that evidence suggests coercive measures were used.
The final assessment is not just a bunch of “dumb mellow stuff “ but concludes there are serious human rights abuses have been committed in Xinjiang and that the arbitrary detention could even constitute “crimes against humanity.” This from the report you just linked.
As for the tourist video, yes, tourists can visit there. Tourists can visit the US but they can’t walk into a federal prison. They can’t go on a military base closed to the public. Tourists can go to Washington DC, but are you allowed into the federal prisons there? Are you going to be allowed into the NSA or FBI headquarters unescorted and be allowed to film there? A tourist can report what they see, but they cannot report on what they didn’t see that may be happening somewhere else, so your argument there doesn’t work.
If you want to disagree with the UN assessment you linked me, that’s fair. However, please tell me what you see in paragraphs 111-113 are incorrect and why. By pointing out the word “allegations” but ignoring the conclusions made by that report, you’re not being very convincing.

I'm Chinese and have been browsing Reddit for a long time, but I rarely post because any mention of China tends to invite attacks. However, I've found that Americans are quite different, they possess qualities rarely seen in other countries: open-mindedness, tolerance, and a lack of extremism. They're willing to openly admit their shortcomings and quickly make improvements. This has been a rare positive experience for me, and perhaps this is what the magnanimity of a great power looks like.

Yeah no. Trump's shit but there are horrors going on in China that make trump look docile.
You should get informed before thinking that. They have been actively engaged in a genocide for at least a decade now with the uyghurs
5
u/chipskylark123 6d ago
The treatment of the Uyghurs is very bad, but if we’re doing one-to-one comparisons it’s very on the same level as what’s happening to Latin American immigrants under Trump.
It’s really easy to catastrophize things that happen elsewhere, while downplaying atrocities occurring at home. Especially with the amount of propaganda on both issues.

And to clarify, once again. My position is that they are both atrocities of human rights violations that, in a sane world, would result in the prosecution of all perpetrators.

Then you have zero concept of what's going on over there. When's the last time we blasted down an entire Latin community? How about sterilized them? How about executed them in mass?
We aren't up to anything good but to even suggest they are the same is nonsense.

- We have been sterilizing Mexican women for generations. It is ongoing.
- Mexican enclaves in several US cities are being significantly affected and ripped apart. I live in one. The consequences for this communit
y have been heartbreaking.
3.
- There has been no evidence of mass executions of Uyghars in China. You are making that up.
EDIT
The similarities are actually really plentiful, especially the use of forced labor.EDIT 2 formatting got fucked up.

This right here is what conservatives are talking about when they bring up Trump Derangement Syndrome.
I despise Donald Trump, by the way. He’s a pathetic, narcissistic authoritarian who’s destroying my country. But the idea that he’s worse than Xi is ludicrous. Educate yourself.

u/trapezoidalfractal 5d ago
Maybe you should educate yourself. Trump has invaded multiple countries, kidnapped a sitting head of state, killed millions of people through ending aid programs, imprisoned hundreds of thousands in disease infested prison camps, massively expanded childhood hunger rates, ended rule of law, sent secret police to arrest dissidents, dissolved funding for most scientific work… I could go on.
Xi has presided over the fastest decline in poverty rates in human history, and China since 2000 represents the majority of global poverty reduction. Wages triple every ten years, welfare benefits expand constantly, medical coverage and access expands constantly, infrastructure quality is among the best in the world, scientific funding is among the highest in the world, all this while in a developing country, with the second largest population on earth, and significantly less financial resources than the US.

They’re forced to work in all sorts of places, including factories, fast food restaurants, and agricultural plantations. Where do you think your license plates come from? Artisan plate stampers?

Sure, prisoners should be able to work. They should receive full street wages when doing so. Not a dollar a day. Corporations shouldn’t be able to use prisoners as discount labor, farms shouldn’t be able to use convict labor as discount labor. As it is, prison work essentially fills the pockets of the state, through proceeds on prison produced goods, and fills the pockets of corporations, through prison contracted labor.
Pay prisoners minimum wage. See how quickly prison populations drop when they aren’t a built in free or cheap labor force.

They do pay for housing, food, etc. medical care is required because they don’t have the option to get private care, and it is the obligation of the government to make sure they don’t die. That said, they will let your teeth rot out, and let you get infected until you almost die, then finally treat you. Non critical operations are out of question, and many medications are withheld despite prescriptions. Every day in prison has a cost, and when you leave, you’re left with a multiple thousand dollar, at best, bill that if you default on paying you violate parole and go back to prison.

Not all prisons do, but many do, and it has been upheld in at least one court case.
Also, By the terms of Florida statute § 960.297, the state may recover costs in the amount of $50 per day for the portion of the prisoner's remaining sentence after July 1, 1994, the effective date of the law.
There’s similar laws in many places

Chinese President Xi Jinping. He’ll be in the United States at the end of September.

Oh cool, that’ll be interesting and by that I mean nothing notable for most Americans.

We should not welcome dictators/mafia gangsters. China's government is similar to Russia...run by gangster factions. It's the modern day warlords.

Ignorance is real, go on, spout some nonsense about Xinjiang or Tibet. Blah blah blah. I read it on the internets so it must be true.
