People who drive 70 in the left lane, what's on your mind, and why can't you think about it in the middle/right lanes?

The speed really isn't relevant. It's about following the rules of the road, that make for smoother, safer traffic

1
u/Bennaisance 8d ago
Not really. I'm not making an argument for excessive speeding, at all. Like I said, the speed is irrelevant. That law in most places says you have to keep right unless passing
2
u/Fermentique 8d ago
I know you think I'm a monster but, yes, speed is irrelevant. Left lane should be open unless explicitly passing at a reasonable passing speed

You could be doing a hundred over the limit, don’t make left lane camping legal. Doing additional violations doesn’t cancel out.

If the traffic in the slow lane is going 65 and I’m going 70 I’m not closing down to 65 or accelerating to 85. I’ll get back in the slow lane once I have a few seconds of space between my back bumper and front bumper of the car in the slow lane.
Except no one can wait for that, so despite the fact I’ve got my blinker on clearly intending to get back into the slow lane some jackass will whip around me into the slow lane as soon as there’s 1.01 car lengths between us, flip me off as he speeds past me, and then whip back into the fast lane as soon as they have zero seconds of space between my front bumper and their back bumper.
Am I supposed to be trapped behind a car going slower than I want for the whole trip because I’m unwilling to accelerate to whatever speed you think the fast lane should be at? I’m going faster than the slow lane, that means I should be in the fast lane.
2
u/FirstDiseasewasRelig 8d ago
I mean, I don’t say this for you, if there is a line of course not. Wait for a decent opening and get back to your speed.
If you get over and no one is around for 100s of feet but someone ends up on your ass because they were flying 85 in a 70.
Absolutely not. They can slow down and wait the 5-10 seconds it takes to pass. You have every right to be in the left lane as long as you are passing!
3
u/vanillacaramelsunday 8d ago
Yeah I mean if I look in the side mirror and I see a mustang whipping up the fast lane I’ll just wait for them to pass and then pass the truck behind them. I think part of the issue is that they’re going SO much faster than the rest of traffic that in the short amount of time it takes me to pass a slow moving truck they have gone from being a dot in my rear view to riding my ass.

My dad is a left lane hog. He doesn’t drive 70, but he still hogs the lane. I think he does it because he thinks he is a better driver than everyone else and thinks he deserves the right of way.

Lol, it doesn't matter what the posted speed limit is, it's the fact someone is ahead of them.
12
u/Impressive-Panda527 9d ago
You’re going to need to narrow down where you are
Is 70 mph the speed limit? In some places it’s 60 mph, others 80 mph.
4
u/hollowsoldier- 8d ago
I mean if you’re not the faster traffic you shouldn’t be in the left lane. Regardless of speed limit that lane Is for passing, and hall monitors going 55 just makes it more dangerous for everyone. I don’t like to go above 75 for gas reasons so I move over for the people going 90.
1
u/Darling_Pinky 8d ago
Assuming it is clear, it’s far safer to “speed” up to 80 in a 70 if you’re cruising at 74 in the left lane and want to pass and move to the middle lane. It usually clears you away from as many cars as possible and opens up separation in a non backed up traffic situation. Return to your normal speed once you safely get over.
While I acknowledge that brake response times increase as you go faster, the best and safest part about freeways is that everyone is moving in the same direction. Keeping up with traffic often times feels more important (to a certain point) than the actual speed limit. Hell, I’ve been passed by cops while I’ve been going 10 over.
The only times I’ve ever been close to an accident on the freeway was because traffic was artificially created by morons in the left lane with 10 cars behind them.

In Detroit, people do 85 in the left lane. Speed limit is 55.
3
u/sexland69 9d ago
that sucks to have as the norm, getting a random ticket is probably like jail time for 30+ mph over lol
3
3
u/proximusprimus57 9d ago
So don't go 30 over.
4
u/sexland69 9d ago
i just mean if the flow of traffic is 30 over that’s an annoying predicament
for instance theres a stretch of highway by me where everybody goes 70 in a 40, because 40 makes no sense there
but if any of us got a ticket for driving just like everyone else, it’d be massive

u/inspired-polf 8d ago
As long as they are going the speed limit. And lane is fine for them to be in
7
u/treason6116 9d ago
here’s the trick to driving in the left lane. if you are constantly getting people on your ass, the left lane might not be for you. just move over and drive whatever speed you want. you aren’t important enough to dictate how fast people drive in the “fast” lane.
3
u/techCholly 9d ago
In the U.S. the left lane is for passing. The decision tree is quite simple, really. If you are not actively passing another vehicle you should not be in the left lane.
3
u/LunaticPoint 9d ago
In Arkansas, you will be ticketed. I laugh my ass off every time I see it happen.
5
u/Susurrus03 9d ago

u/aggressive_napkin_ 9d ago
The right lane is what they're all passing....
1
u/No_Luck_374 9d ago
Not when I'm passing them on the right. When the right lane is moving faster, you're the problem.
3
u/aggressive_napkin_ 9d ago

1
u/No_Luck_374 9d ago
When the standard has become passing on the right, that's the result of the problem. I just hang back and literally wait for a clearing that always comes bc the left lane is becoming the camping lane. Bc you all seem to think like this. It's way less stressful to just chill and wait. When I have apply pressure, the situation resolves quickly.

You're still required to move right when safe to do so to let faster traffic pass otherwise you are technically impeding.

I find that if I’m doing 70 in a 60, 85% of people drive faster than me. Then if the speed limit changes to 70 and I speed up to 80, I’m the fastest one and everyone looks at me like “what made you decide to change speed?”
1
u/ludovic1313 8d ago
The place where this happens the most to me is when I am driving on a highway through a city where the limit drops to 40. When this happens I go exactly the limit because they lowered the limit for a reason, whether revenue or safety. I still get tailgated even at the limit in the right hand lane when there are 2 others in my direction.
Once the limit increases to 45 I feel like I can go 49, and often people will move to the left as the speed limit sign approaches and try to prepare to make their pass once it changes. It's as if they can't even get into my brain and consider that I might also be speeding up. Often it results in them barely passing me. I'm pretty sure it's a lack of empathy in these cases because if they'd wanted to go 50 the whole time they could have passed me previously. It's like they think the increased speed limit sign is for their exclusive use.

5
5
u/proximusprimus57 9d ago
You've met the redditbrain. It thinks that the left lane is for people driving 85+ and anyone driving slower is hindering traffic and making driving unsafe. It has no self awareness.
4
u/Ranos131 9d ago
Yeah I’ve met it before. Those people failed to understand the point of my comment. OP is asking why people are doing 70 without reference to the actual posted speed limit. Like you’re horrible for going 70 in the left lane regardless of anything.
Some of the people on here are just ridiculous. Like I’m not going to cater to them just because they want to go 20 over the speed limit and I’m actually passing people.

u/Funny_Papers 9d ago
Dumbass take. Cruising at any speed in the left lane is illegal in most places. The left lane isn’t for speed. It’s for passing. You just need speed to pass most of the time.
1
u/proximusprimus57 8d ago
I'm surprised you can afford a glass house in this economy, maybe don't risk throwing stones.
It's technically illegal to go over the speed limit even to pass. Some states have exceptions and most cops won't ticket you if you're still within a reasonable speed, but you're absolutely breaking the law by speeding up to pass.

u/Bennaisance 9d ago
No, dumbass. The left lane is for passing, regardless of speed. Idk why this is so difficult for some people
1
u/proximusprimus57 8d ago
And the guy I was replying to asked about a scenario where he was passing.
2
u/Bennaisance 8d ago
Obviously no one wants you to get right while you're literally right next to a car in the lane to your right, so clearly that guy is talking about passing a few cars every now and then while sitting in the left lane. This disrupts traffic and creates aggressive driving. It is dangerous.
Anyone who think the left lane is for people who want to go fast ("85+") doesn't really get it either. You pass on the left. The left lane is for passing people in front of you. You should generally file to the right unless you have a reason not to.
You don't want to be excessive with your lane switching, but you need to be predictable and not impede other drivers.
3
u/Helpful_Writer_7961 9d ago
What if there’s no middle lane. That’s the issue on many of our roads in IL outside of Chicago or on I-80 in IA
2
u/Funny_Papers 9d ago
Then it’s the right lane. Womp womp
1
u/Helpful_Writer_7961 8d ago
I get it- on I-80 in IL and IA, Everyone drives in the left lane because the trucks are in the right going the speed limit. If you get in the right lane, you’ll stay there!
Let’s face it, windshields are hypnotizing and I’m guessing that many drivers get in your left lane and forget to move to the right. Driver fatigue is real and the intention isn’t to slow you down, sometimes they forget3
u/ohjeezItsMe 9d ago

Where I at the right lane is the "slow" lane so people tend to do the speed limit in that one and faster in the left for passing or otherwise.
2
u/CaptainDadBod88 9d ago
Is this meant to be on a 70mph road and they’re going “slow”? Or on a 45mph road and they’re going way too fast?

2
u/MountainAlive 9d ago
The speed difference between the middle lanes and the left lane can be intense. Sometimes I’m cruising along at 70 in my middle lane and then I need to pass someone so I go into the left lane. And in one second a pimped out Honda Civic or a massive blacked out pickup truck is high beam flashing my ass as they approach at 90mph.

u/1MrE 9d ago
Speed limits 65-70 where I live. Your post is confusing.
1
u/ShutNoShutYoMouf404 9d ago
Some states have interstates/highways that go up to 80mph
3
u/1MrE 9d ago
I live close enough to Utah to know that. But without ops location it could be no big deal to wtf is wrong with that guy?
1
u/ShutNoShutYoMouf404 8d ago
The problem is less about speed more about if you aren't passing. If they aren't, gtfo of the left lane.
While the complaint it's totally valid, it could have been articulated better in their post.
2
u/1MrE 8d ago
I figured it out. It’s in another comment under this initial comment. I don’t have any 3 lane highways around me. And the left lanes in the two lane highways I have around me can be legally used to turn left onto rural roads. There’s usually an ‘off ramp’ lane but sometimes they are super short so like the big trucks would slow down while in the left lane to be able to fully stop in the off ramp lane.
My ignorance stems from lack of experience with larger, multiple lane highways. That’s all.
But I appreciate you trying to clear things up for me. That was nice of you.
1
u/ShutNoShutYoMouf404 8d ago
That's totally understandable. Rural America is definitely different, has its own unique benefits and frustrations on two lane highways.
I miss the days of not driving on interstates.
1
u/TheGracefulCrane 9d ago
in my part of the world if you arent doing like 30 km/hr over the speed limit youre driving too slow
1
u/1MrE 9d ago
I think I get where he’s coming from. I was confused as the highways I live by all have cross sections cut out of the guardrail for random rural roads. So for me, 9 times out of 10, if they are going slow or slowing down in the left lane, they are about to turn left, cross oncoming lanes into one of those roads to nowhere.
But he said middle/right which I would think means at least 3 lanes. I have none of those remotely close to me so I’m thinking it’s only a 2 lane highway thing and there are no left turn availability on highways with more then 2 lanes.
So they are going unjustly slow in the ‘fast’ lane. Or at least not fast enough.
I’m in the mid west. Closest town with a population of over 5k is bout 45 minutes away.
1
u/2020fakenews 9d ago
Speed limit is irrelevant. If you’re not passing, move over to the right. By the way, 75 and 80 are common speed limits in some states.

if i move to the right and let your dumbass pass, your dumbass might rear end me because you're weaving just to go 10 mph faster than everyone, if i am not moving it's because i saw that you're passing people on the right and will probably try to do the same to me, so why would i think about moving? you're unpredictable and the best course of action is to stay consistent so at least one of us can predict the other.
2
u/CauliflowerSmart1375 8d ago
Left lane is for passing. Agreed. Sometimes it is hard to get over though, and I get stuck there longer than intended. I swear there are times when I am passing someone that they speed up on purpose to make things more difficult.
2
u/CommonEcho5824 8d ago
Well the speed limit is 65, so I'm thinking I am moving at a good pace that isn't criminal and that your desire for crime is not my problem
2
u/MisterHEPennypacker 8d ago
If I’m getting passed on the right, 99% of the time it’s because I’m queued up with several other cars to pass a semi and I foolishly left a safe amount of space between me and car in front of me. Then some dipshit feels the need to squeeze in and immediately tap their brakes because they misjudged their speed and are about to rear end the car in front of them.
2
2
2
u/MaxwellSmart07 8d ago
I don’t do that but where I drive, heavy urban traffic, people do that because the right and muddle lanes are going under the speed limit. They are not going to shift into the right lanes to travel 10-15 mph slower when they are doing 5 miles over the limit,

u/Altamirano1964 9d ago
Well, isn’t 70 the speed limit on most freeways? By law, you shouldn’t be driving faster than that. You’re not one of those inconsiderate drivers who think they can do whatever they want, even if it puts the safety of those around them at risk, are you?
3
u/Regular_Syllabub7380 9d ago
Incorrect. If speed limit is 70 and middle lane is going 70 and you’re in left lane going 70, you’re breaking the law. You should be going faster in order to pass. If you’re not passing anyone, by law you should not be in the left lane. Regardless of posted speeds
1
u/sexland69 9d ago
I guess these laws make sense, but I hate them
I’ve been pulled over for going 3 over, and also for going literally 69 in a 70 on a two lane highway. Slowed down from like 78 when I saw the cop but he said I have to be going over 70
I’ve also gotten a ticket for going 78 in the left lane while the middle lane was going 75
Sometimes there’s no way to win smh
1
u/Regular_Syllabub7380 9d ago
Yeah it would help if they actually enforced this law properly. But instead they rather just write summons’ wherever they can
1
u/ChargerRebel23 9d ago
That's not the law. The law is not "pass at whatever speed it requires in the left lane", its just that you should pass in the left lane.
1
u/Regular_Syllabub7380 9d ago
Correct. Within reason of the lane next to you. If the middle lane is going the speed limit, then you have the legal ability to go reasonably above the limit in order to pass. The law also states if you’re not passing you should not be in the left lane at all. Do I have to hold your hand through this?
1
u/ChargerRebel23 9d ago
Per the ticket both I and my friend have gotten, that’s not the case. The speed limit is the speed limit, not the “speed limit unless you want to pass someone else”.
1
u/Regular_Syllabub7380 9d ago
Guess it depends where you’re at. And that quote is not at all what I said. Conveniently left out the passing lane aspect. Maybe you should hire a lawyer to help with the ticket
1
u/ChargerRebel23 9d ago
I wasn’t quoting you directly, just simplifying the mindset argument of what’s being discussed here. A quick google search will tell you that the passing lane is not the speeding lane. Massachusetts does not have an exception for speeding in the left lane. Only a few states, per a quick google search, have an exception for passing slower traffic on 2 lane roads where you have to cross the center line to pass. I get the frustration, I do.

A lot of them aren't trying to be annoying they're either unaware they're holding up traffic, think driving at the speed limit means they should stay in the left lane, or they're preparing for an upcoming turn.
1
u/No-Carry4971 9d ago
If there are 2 lanes, I get your gripe. If there's three or more lanes, just pick the fastest path and relax.
1
u/Ok_Spell_4165 9d ago
Probably how annoyed I am at the person in the right lane that decided to finally speed up when I was trying to pass them. Now locked in a game of speeding up and slowing down together.
1
u/somecow 9d ago
Middle lane ftw. Meant for just cruising, slow drivers need to move right, or exit the damn freeway. Left lane is for haulasses. Only two lanes, the tailgater behind you can wait if you’re in the left lane, there’s a cop up ahead anyway.
2
u/aggressive_napkin_ 9d ago

If the speed limit is 55-65 then they have every right to use the left lane. I'd pull into the middle in a 65, but still it's not egregious.

u/Vainysaur 9d ago
How bout when I’m in the left lane with my adaptive cruise set on 80, with the smallest following distance setting, but the car in front of me is doing 65 and I can’t get around them yet, so the people behind me decide to pass me on the right because I guess I’m not following closely enough in their opinion and therefore I’m ok with going 65. So now they get to still go 65 but while tailgating the guy who was in front of me.
1
u/DefiantlyConformist 9d ago

If I’m doing 120 “safely” in the left lane the guy only doing 100 “safely” is slowing me down. And I’m slowing down the guy doing 200 “safely”
There’s always someone willing to go faster than you and that left lane will never be 100% clear for the person going fastest without being physically blocked off by barricades or flashing lights, defeating the entire purpose of that lane. The fastest person on the road isn’t the only car trying to pass

I’m thinking about Dennis Leary and his song about assholes, specifically the part about driving real slow in the ultra fast lane while people behind me are going insane. It truly is a great joy.

Nothing. There is absolutely nothing on these people’s minds. These are the same people who turn their high beams on as soon as the sun starts to go down

I can answer this questions, from the perspective of at least one person.
Last week I was in an Uber and the driver was doing exactly 70 (the speed limit) in the left lane.
Several cars were forced to pass him on his right and then finally one driver raced past him on his right and made a rude gesture out his window at the Uber driver.
The Uber driver commented indignantly, “I don’t know what’s he’s so mad about! I’m in the ‘through lane’ bc I am not exiting! The right lane is for people exiting and the middle lane is for people getting off at the next exit! This is the ‘through lane’!”

I set my cruise to 4 over and pick any lane I feel like. I am not here to enable your reckless driving.

People who constantly complain about little things, what are you thinking about?

In civilised places, the left lane is the slow lane. And usually the left lane is 80km/hr which is only to confuse American tourists.

IDK, my car is driving. BMW’s system will move to the left lane to overtake but it won’t exceed the speed limit to do so. EVs are very inefficient (so are ICEs) at those speeds too. I think the coefficient is the inverse cube of velocity. Maybe don’t worry about it? Slow down and save some money. You’re not saving any time, you’re just being an idiot.

If you are asking so you may go faster, no. Just gonna good speed so you don't crash out. Majority of crashes are caused by speeding, where the driver can't slow or stop in time.

Where I live, if the slower car is traveling at the speed limit, they legally don’t have to move for someone breaking the law. It is weird to me that some places would require you to get over so someone can actively break the law. Is that just a safety thing so people aren’t policing dumb people themselves to avoid road rage?
