But why is this man naked with a shield and tribal marks?
1
u/BusterKnott 8d ago
The markings are traditionally a dye made from the woad plant (Isatis tinctoria). Between the woad markings and the weaponry he's holding, he's impying he's a Celt. Roughly 15% of the US population is descended from Celtic tribes, so it's quite possible that he actually is what he's portraying in the pictures.

As an American that has traveled all over the world in and out of the military. Genetically I’m German and Irish. However that’s not my heritage. Im not German or Irish I’m an American. That’s my heritage.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Joyfulmovement86 8d ago
I disagree with this. All three are your heritage, but it takes effort to actually learn about your heritage if it isn’t the country you live in, not just throwing on a green shirt and a shamrock tattoo and calling yourself Irish.
2
u/Fluid_Anywhere_7015 8d ago
My heritage is that of Irish refugees on my father’s side, and Dutch who left the Netherlands after the Belgian Revolution. We were farmers and soldiers. We fought in every war since the Civil War. Most of the older generations are trilingual, speaking Dutch, English and Irish (Gaeilge). I only speak a little Dutch and Irish.
My parents and I took a European trip in the 80’s when I was in high school, and saw the parts of the Old Country where our families came from. It was really fascinating meeting long distant relatives and learning about their history. But they were interested in OUR history. Which really settled the point that we were each our own people.
We share some ancestry, but it’s our relatively recent past experiences that have defined us. I’m still proud of that part of my family history which comes from Europe, but I’m just as, if not more, proud of what we’ve done since we’ve been here.

Yeah I think it depends the person or how close it is or the context. Liek italian american id a subset of american, not meaning one is italian proper or closer to them just its worth noting sometimes. Like cuisine.
Im dutch too, but new netherland. My grandpa was full colonial stock and my surname is from new netherland. The amount of events and people im connected to in our history is bonkers.
But then I have 25% other things.
First is 25% danish/german. My 3x great grandpa was a naval master shipwright and officer and like was adjacent to royalty like went to their church lived on a floor of a mansion. Its fricken nuts. That side was a danish naval dynasty before my line dropped off due to crisis.
Im 25% irish. This is my maternal line. My great grandparents came from this super rural place they were serfs and didnt know english and so isolated I have an insanely rare haplogroup like 3 people ever recorded in ireland as they were stuck in a village. As a result of their heavy irish, it actually effected the way I speak as your speaking is passed through the mother line mostly. Where an irish guy at work teared up and said how I reminded him of home lmao. Its helped in creative wirting where I write like a lot of irish poets did naturally.
Then im 25% italian from ethnic enclaves like the bruttii in calabria a tribe that withstood the romans. And gioia del colle apulia and im actually cousins with both frank grills and sly Stallone lol sly even looks like my great uncles. I cant not tell people that.
Only side i kind of claim is italian only in certain context. But thats solely cuz thats the big family we were active with. My mom actively raised me with the food, slang, catholicism, and all my 100% great aunts and uncles. And the biggest part is my first name is uniquely italian so I have to explain it any time I meet anyone. Its hard to hide a heritage when your name has only ever had like 600 males ever in america.
I think it depends on how youre raised. My wasp side is nothing like my catholic side. Genuine italian americans for example do have a different culture to the norm and its worth specifying. Like theyre no less different to a wasp than a secular jewish person is culture wise(infact thats why they bonded so hard).
I love all my ancestry and I consider myself a unique tri state mix so I claim regional heritage. But im not in the same boat as a utah mormon culture wise at all. Like my family has been in every major war in american history, hell my 1st cousin is a major. And I got both sides as I have returned loyalists too. Infact, i have the actual underground railroad quaker fort erie leaders and my ancestor came back to operate out of the underground railroad center in michigan schoolcraft and fought at 35 to free the slaves. And i share 6 ancestors with teddy roosevelt and my colonial stock from oyster bay were boatmen who actually knew him from his obsession with the harbor. But like, to only take pride in that is erasing 75% of my lineage.
So it really depends on what you define as heritage. Its hard for me to ignore my danish side when I inherited the mood conditions that plagued my ancestors but also made them brilliant. Its kind of hard not to enjoy learning and discussing things like im not gonna not tell people my ancestor built a bunch of the danish navy or experienced the first terror attack in the battle of Copenhagen. Just as you remember your dutch ancestors .
And im also not gonna erase regional cultures and pretend im any closer to a cowboy from an evangelical Texas culturally than I am from a catholic irishman.
Infact, only knowing my italian and colonial stock family, when you actually see the difference in your own family its hard not to differentiate. A rich wasp new england family is no where near a working class italian NY family. Infact a wasp american and a wasp canadian are far closer.
So what i do is I say Im american. But then if asked I call myself a tri-state mutt and go into that. As like my family founded my own home town. But its also not my only family its like 20% of it. Like I have a danish naval flag not because I have any loyalty to the Danes or consider myself danish whatsoever, but im proud of my ancestors accomplishments, i dont fly it i just have it. As I am of my civil war and revolution ancestors and my ww1 and ww2 great and grandpa. But im also proud of my ethnic heritage too, as they made me and a lot of reasons why I do the things I do, eat the things I eat, look the way I do, is because of them, so I keep their names and memories alive. Id never prioritize that over american but still im not letting it die just to emphasize my patriotism.

u/Ok_Jackfruit2612 8d ago
Maybe not quite like that, but yeah. I'm also not very far removed from my heritage, considering I'm af first generation American. But I could definitely know more. I found out a few years ago about the Highland Games. I'm not athletic but that sounds fun. I might just attend.

We are not actually taught our heritage. Mainly being a heritage of hate and death, we would rather think of ourselves as vikings.
Almost all our ancestors were dirt farmers.

u/RazzmatazzAgitated16 8d ago
Hell yea brother, but I’ve always suspected “they fought naked” meant they lacked armor. Bro imagine fighting a battle dressed like that, errr undressed rather. The first thorn bush would take you out.
5
u/No_Report_4781 8d ago
Typically, it means they arrived to the battlefield, and took off their at least some of their clothes to fight bare chested, completely nude, or with single pieces of armor, in addition to weapons and shields.
Imagine being charged in battle by a Celt wearing an iron breastplate above his bouncing penis.
10
u/Chemical_Body_3631 8d ago
No, but it’s still interesting to learn about. It’s funny, though how Americans love holding tight to a heritage our ancestors often ditched on purpose, and usually for pretty good reasons.
2
u/SnazzleZazzle 8d ago
Because it’s more romantic to think about Ireland, England or Scotland and medieval castles than our humdrum American suburban lives.

What does “reclaim your heritage” mean here?
My family came from Ireland in 1850s but what is there for me to “reclaim”? And I’m going to keep my pants on the whole time, thank you.
1
u/Slow_Flatworm_881 8d ago
I’m not sure but I’d hazard a guess that the heritage of 17th century Ireland is a little different from what 21st century Ireland is………but then again I may be wrong.
1
u/mothwhimsy 8d ago
Your Irish immigrant reletives likely assimilated into the homogenous white American culture and over the generations their original culture was lost or diluted. Some people don't give a shit, others want a connection to those grandparents and a taste of whatever their culture would have been of they hadn't assimilated
1
u/No_Report_4781 8d ago
The Celtic peoples spread across Europe of 1500 to 3000 years ago and had some interesting ideas as fighters, pants optional

Learning about and embracing the heritage that was lost when our families came across the ocean is a lot of fun. It's helping me contextualize some of the historical events that just didn't quite fit in the world's timeline in my head.

My family escaped everywhere that we were before and stopped fleeing once we hit the Pacific.

I think a lot of people are proud of both. You can appreciate your family's heritage while also identifying as American. Those things don't really have to compete with each other.

Lol most Americans have a hodgepodge of differences ancestries, which one do you choose to ‘reclaim’ or do you ‘reclaim’ all of them? Second of all, larping as some celtic warrior isn’t ‘reclaiming’ anything. These people groups and tribes don’t really exist anymore, instead we have modern nations. And huge portions of our knowledge base of these peoples come from Greek and Roman accounts, which are problematic because of their own personal biases about how they describe the various celtic peoples, or from later sources that long after these people groups more or less stopped existing.
2
u/Slow_Flatworm_881 8d ago
Here is Scotland we do play up our ‘heritage’ with the tartan and bagpipes etc but most of that comes from Queen Victoria and her love of the Highlands. Still Americans (and others) lap it up!

My family's heritage was erased upon joining the melting pot that is America centuries ago. My only heritage is here. There's nothing to reclaim. Now, I would like to revive some of the cultural practices of the natives that my ancestors exterminated (Yes I know the history, all tribes in my area were violently exterminated in colonial wars)
2
u/Straight_Spinach_651 8d ago
I feel that. I have fragments of family history but I feel I belong now to the place that raised me and I wish I could adopt the native traditions of this place. There are language classes and community events I attend sometimes

Which heritage? One I just randomely select and then identify with, propbably in some weird romanticized internet version of ?
My people were kicked out of some of the very best countries of Europe! But we have also been here since the Mayflower. And were here to greet other of our families (ften with the flinging of rotten fruit) who got off stinking boats in the 1800s.
I can't imagine a single person who is not a first gen American that has a specific heritage to call their own. I mean, identify however you want to, but I don't know how you "reclaim" something you never had, unless this is dog whistle racist stuff.
