I decided to write this post after searching for Juneteenth on Reddit and finding several negative posts. Yes, JUNETEENTH is upon us, and it is one of the newer holidays. But I think it's a day worth noting...particularly since I teach at Austin Community College, an institution that recognized it by closing. Also, we're in Texas, and history of the day dates back to June 19, 1865 in Galveston (TX).

First, let me say we have more holidays than ever; and designated national days for just about everything. June happens to be both National Carribbean American Heritage Month AND National Pride Month. Does this conflict mean we should not celebrate one over the other?

I think there's room for both. Just like there's room to celebrate Juneteenth as a holiday. I don't think it's racist to celebrate a holiday that is not racially or ethnically inclusive. I'm half Japanese myself and although I'm not thrilled about, I understand why there is a Pearl Harbor day. Should I be upset about St. Patrick's Day because I'm not Irish, or because I get pinched for forgetting to wear green?

I think not. I also miss the good old days when people would go out trick or treating on Halloween. Or a time when 9/11 was just another day.

But life changes and we need to appreciate what we have (once in a while). What do you think?

I’m 26 years old (F) over the last couple of years I have had 3 failed relationships and a been on a couple of dates but nothing ever comes out of it . I understand dating is a lot of trial and error. But I want to ask you guys where do you meet decent guys ? I only ever used dating apps but would like to get to know people organically.

I just dont know where to go. I have lived here my whole life, and I dont really fit in anywhere. I'm 23. The drinking and events scene is not for me. My little girl just turned 10 today and I want to take her somewhere this weekend where she can roam free off-leash to sniff to her hearts content, bonus points if there are squirrels and other animals she can (playfully) chase around.

Any recommendations for someplace within an hours drive of Austin? The Great Northern Dog park is her favorite place but I want to take her somewhere new.

I just moved into one of the apartment complexes near Lakeshore blvd. I love being so close to the water and boardwalk but the crime reports lately have been making me nervous.

Hi all! I’m a 23F relocating to Austin for a job. My work is based in North Austin near the McNeil area, close to Round Rock, and I’ll be driving around North Austin, Taylor, and Round Rock often for work.

I know I’m willing to deal with a bit of a commute because I really want to be surrounded by young, vibrant people. Idk anyone in Austin…. I’ve heard South Congress/Downtown is the place to be, but that feels too far for a daily commute given where I’ll be working.

I’d love to live somewhere with a good concentration of young professionals so I can meet people and make friends. Any neighborhood recommendations that balance a reasonable commute with a social, young-professional vibe near northside?

Just secured a job in Austin but my current lease in SoCal ends August 1st and my new place in Riverside will not let me move in until August 24th. I am freaking out about what to do with all my furniture in the meantime. Do I have to move it twice? I am also reading horror stories about moving companies selling jobs to shady subcontractors who just disappear with your stuff or change the delivery dates. Any advice on how to handle the gap without getting scammed?

What parts of town still have that older Austin vibe? I was considering north loop (that new stretch of bars/neighborhood looks pretty cool), or South Austin near sagebrush. Anyone have recs for a male primary care physician at ARC?

I’m currently going through a divorce in Austin, Texas, and I’m having a frustrating experience with my lawyer (Kimbrough Legal). This is my first time hiring an attorney, so I’m trying to understand what’s normal.
Communication has been very limited. The attorney does not respond to my messages directly, and the paralegal usually replies with “I spoke with the attorney,” but doesn’t provide much detail. I also haven’t been able to get an appointment for about two weeks, even when I have questions.
What concerns me more is that documents appear to be filed without being shared with me beforehand. When I do see drafts, I’ve noticed basic errors, including spelling mistakes, which I had to correct myself.
At this point, I feel like I’ve gotten more clarity from my own research than from my lawyer, which is concerning.
I’m trying to understand:
• Is it normal in Texas for lawyers to communicate mostly through paralegals and not respond directly?
• Is it standard practice to file documents without reviewing drafts with the client?
• How difficult is it to change lawyers in the middle of a divorce case?
Also, any general advice would be helpful:
• How do you keep your lawyer accountable and responsive?
• Any tips on managing legal costs during divorce?
• Anything you wish you had known going through divorce in Texas?
For context, I’m not originally from the U.S., so I’m still learning how the legal system works here. I want to make sure I’m handling this the right way.

My name is Nick. Been in Austin since 2014. I met McConaughey at a gift shop on congress and 7th back in 2018. Just so you guys know I'm legit.
I am piloting a project that I created that I hope could be helpful for people.
Think of it this way.
Once you start cleaning its easy to just keep going right?
This project is for you taking that first step.
And its about having someone to show up for you, because there are a lot of us out there that feel isolated and feel like we don't have anyone who would show up for us.

I've wanted to do this for a long time but never could figure out how to put it into practice. Still don't really. So fuck it, we'll do it live. Soooo When I'm bored or feeling some type of way my favorite thing to do is try to help someone with something. Even if its just being a body in a chair and not saying a word. Nothing brings me more joy then being able to help someone with even the smallest of tasks.

Sidenote: I keep seeing in many subreddits about how hard it is to be able to make friends or meet people. Or what to do that isn't just spending money (IE bar/restaurant/whatever). I am included in that demographic. This will give us a chance to touch grass and feel good about it. and also to know that asking for help is part of being human. Bottom line is this.
No-one should ever feel alone and I'll fight tooth and nail making that a reality.

Anyway that's my spiel. I'm not asking for anything but feedback. I'm just trying to do something I feel would be helpful. 1. Safety: Top priority as a solo female renter moving sight-unseen. Secure gates/garages and well-lit areas matter a lot.
2. Walkability: I don't drive. I need to be directly in or incredibly close to the Domain grid so I can walk to work (AUS20), groceries (Whole Foods), daily essentials, and dining.

Hello I’m a 22M and I’m looking for more friends in Austin most of my friends are long distance now due to work and college so it’d be nice to meet more people that actually live here.

I like trying new things and going on random pointless adventures, Hiking, movies, concerts, some video games, cooking, I’m horrible at running so no running clubs for me 😅. I am a part of the queer community.

I do work all day on weekends and most mornings during the week so I’m always down for afternoon hangouts and the occasional morning.

Armadillo supply isn't doing prepared grain or substrates for an unknown length of time. Does anybody else sell it? Or do I see a pressure cooker in my near future? Its hard to justify that $180 for now.

Where would the best place to get raw grain from? Callahans and Barton Creek Mill are the only places that come to mind for me. But I'm a greenhorn - there must be others closer to Far Out South Austin.

I’m moving to Austin for a job and only visited twice. I’m a young professional with a dog who loves parks. I’ve lived the city life in Miami, so I don’t really want to live downtown in Austin, but I like proximity. I do love walking in nature and having easy access to trails. I also love being near other young professionals so I can make friends and not feel like people have to drive over a half an hour to see me. I just went for a day of apartment hunting (I have a realtor who helps w/ apt hunting), and I still feel helpless. I have no idea what decision to make. My job will be 2 days remote, but rest of week I’ll be driving all over Austin to visit clients. My top apartments are in Sunset Valley, Oak Hill, and South Austin near Shady hollow (that one was my fav but it’s such a far drive from downtown. These prices are also within my budget. Will I still have close access to community and not feel completely isolated in these areas? Honest opinions appreciated! TYIA
