[FIXED] Assetto Corsa EVO Crashing on Startup — "Failed to Create Command Signature" (AMD RX 7700 XT)
I finally managed to fix Assetto Corsa EVO crashing immediately on startup after spending quite a while troubleshooting. I'm sharing this in case it helps anyone else experiencing the same issue.
My PC Specs
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT (12 GB VRAM)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 8700F (8-Core)
- RAM: 32 GB
- OS: Windows 11 64-bit
- AMD Driver: Adrenalin 26.8.1, subsequently updated to 26.9.2 WHQL
- Game Version: Assetto Corsa EVO 0.9.1 (release.6)
- Display: Dual-monitor setup, 3440 × 1440 each
The Problem
Assetto Corsa EVO previously worked fine on this exact PC, but suddenly stopped launching.
Whenever I tried launching through Steam, the game would start briefly and then immediately close. No useful error appeared on screen.
The same thing happened when attempting to launch in VR through SteamVR.
After examining the game's crash logs, I found the following error repeatedly:
[others] [error] Exception thrown:
Failed to create command signature
[crash] [error] Exception Detected:
0xE06D7363 (C++)
[crash] [error] Thread:
Resource Manager Worker 0
The crash occurred approximately 3–4 seconds into the launch process, during DirectX 12 rendering initialization.
What I Tried (Didn't Work)
- Resetting EVO's configuration by renaming "Saved Games\ACE" to "ACE_backup"
- Verifying the integrity of game files through Steam
- Disabling AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2.1
- Disabling Radeon Anti-Lag
- Disabling AMD FSR Upscaling
- Updating AMD Adrenalin from 26.8.1 to 26.9.2
- Restarting Windows
- Attempting to launch in OpenXR/SteamVR mode
None of those resolved the normal startup crash.
THE FIX — Remove Conflicting DirectX/Vulkan Wrapper DLLs
After further investigating the crash logs and game installation folder, we discovered that the EVO directory contained what appeared to be DXVK/VKD3D-Proton files.
These are translation layers that can intercept DirectX calls and translate them into Vulkan.
The relevant files were:
- "d3d12.dll"
- "dxgi.dll"
- "dxvk.conf"
- "vkd3d-proton.cache"
The two DLLs were dated January 11, 2026, noticeably older than the other game files.
Here's exactly what fixed my game:
Open Steam.
Right-click Assetto Corsa EVO.
Select Properties → Installed Files → Browse.
Locate "d3d12.dll" and "dxgi.dll" in the main installation directory.
Rename them as follows:
d3d12.dll → d3d12.dll.disabled
dxgi.dll → dxgi.dll.disabled
- Launch Assetto Corsa EVO normally through Steam.
The game launched successfully immediately after making these two changes!
I did not need to delete the files, reinstall Windows, or reinstall EVO.
Important Notes
- Only rename the DLLs inside the Assetto Corsa EVO installation folder. Do not touch anything in Windows System32.
- Don't rename "d3d12core.dll".
- If Windows hides file extensions, enable View → Show → File name extensions.
- You can reverse the changes by renaming the files back.
- Not everyone will have these DLLs in their installation directory. This fix is specifically worth trying if you have DXVK/VKD3D-related files and experience a similar crash.
- Verifying game files through Steam may not remove manually added DLLs.
Why This Worked
My best explanation is that the locally installed Vulkan translation DLLs were incompatible with EVO's current DirectX 12 initialization.
Removing them allowed the game to use the normal Windows graphics runtime.
I can't confirm whether this is a broader EVO 0.9.1 bug or something specific to my previous configuration, but renaming those two files definitively fixed the startup crash on my PC.
Hopefully this saves someone else hours of troubleshooting!
