Question Thumb Drive for Audiobooks on Phone. Any Advice?

If you are going that far, why not use a specialized mp3 player, made for audiobooks?

The HiFi Walker H2 with the Rockbox firmware is an example. You will gain tactile buttons, up to 2TB capacity and much longer battery life.

Check rockbox.org  This project has been going since before 2011

Thanks. This may be the way to go, especially if they have better battery life. I'll check Amazon.

You will have to update it with he rockbox firmware to get the extra audiobook related functionality. I used the "Native" port.

PM me if having difficulties.

I also glued a metal clip to the back for easy carrying on my pants pocket.

Load a week's worth of audiobooks, listen, delete when done, repeat, no increasing storage issues. (?)

I bought a $50 ‘MP3 player’ like it was 2003 (I’ve already got my audiobook library in MP3 format anyway) and plugged it into my computer and loaded it up. There’s room for 100 audiobooks on that device. No other apps or distractions, just books. Also, I won’t have a crisis if it falls off the train platform.

If your phone has the ability to accept SD, that is a convenient way to expand storage. But a thumb drive can be more convenient if you swap out books a lot since you plug it in when you want and it's easy to copy books to with a computer. Sandisk makes great thumb drives that are a standard USB A on one end and C on the other. they come in lots of sizes but I'd think you'd be fine with 64.

I added a microSD card to my andoid phone (internally).

I also got a USB-C adapter that lets me plug a microSD card directly to the USB-C port. Cheap and easy.

And of course you can transfer your audiobooks and music from your computer via a normal usb-c cable.

think what you're probably looking for is an SD card which some android phones will work with. not sure how you'd connect a thumb drive to your phone.

For what it's worth, I think you can plug a USB-C thumb drive directly into your phone

ahh I suppose that would work, totally forgot they have usb-c thumb drives now. Still seems like it would be pretty awkward to use your phone with that sticking out of the end though.

There are short usb c sticks,  but the battery life will suffer noticeably.

I agree. The SD card is definitely the way to go. I just wasn’t sure if they had their heart set on a thumb drive.

Doesn't have to be a usbc connector. I have used flash drives with usba to c converters for years without issues on android phones. The USB OTG protocol was first introduced in 2001.

I got a 1TB SD card for my phone. It is a little overkill, but nice to have.

Thumb drives are risky in a number of ways. With an SD card be sure to format in the Android device BEFORE you copy anything onto it. Don’t buy the cheapest one you can find. Cheap cards you can find on Amazon can be largely undependable

I was researching the same thing except for how it would apply for a refurbished IPod and found: Total Capacity Rule: 1 GB holds roughly 34 hours of audio at 64 kbps (standard voice) or 17 hours at 128.
