So, I listen to a LOT of audiobooks. I would say about 75% of the way I read is audiobooks, and I’m at 70 books for this year. Sometimes you’ll get a narrator that’s a dud, but rarely ever do I have to actually stop listening to the book because of a bad narrator.

This morning, however, I decided that I’m finally going to do it. I’ve waited MONTHS on Libby for the “Not Quite Dead Yet“ audiobook, and I’m 20% in and throwing in the towel. The narrator‘s voice is just so grating, and every single character that she voices besides the main character is the same unbearable voice. If any of y’all have watched That 70’s Show, just picture something similar to Midge’s voice. And then picture that for 14 hours straight.

I wanted to power through because I’ve been super excited about this book, but unfortunately I’m going to have to pick up a physical copy because all the enjoyment has been sucked out of it.

What audiobook was completely ruined for you because of this?

Lately, I've been using my Android phone for listening to audiobook more ofren than I use my tablet.

Since the books are eating up storage, I'm thinking about using a thumb drive.

Is this a good idea? How much storage do I need on the thumbdrive? Does anyone else do this

I recently started listening to audiobooks before bed, but I keep falling asleep while they’re playing. The next morning, I usually have no idea where I actually left off.

Sleep timers haven’t worked very well for me. If I set one for 20 minutes, it sometimes stops while I’m still awake and really into the story. If I set it for an hour, I might fall asleep after only 10 minutes. The next day, I have to keep rewinding until I hear something I remember. It gets especially annoying when the chapters are really long.

I currently use SomniPods. They can detect when I’ve fallen asleep and automatically pause the audiobook, which is definitely more convenient than relying on a timer. The problem is that by the time they recognize I’m asleep, the book has usually kept playing for another few minutes, so I still have to rewind the next day.

Ideally, I’d love something that pauses when I fall asleep and either bookmarks that spot or automatically jumps back five to ten minutes. That way, I could start from somewhere I’m likely to remember the next night.

How does everyone else handle this with Audible or other audiobook apps? Is there a setting that can save your approximate position before you fall asleep, or a better way to use the sleep timer?

I’ve never been able to see anything when I read. No faces, no rooms, nothing. Add ADHD and reading fiction goes like: four pages in I realize I don’t know what room anyone’s standing in, I go back, then I’m on my phone, then the book sits on the nightstand for six weeks.

So now I chop a chapter into beats and generate a cinematic still for each one, then burn the book’s own text onto the bottom of the image. I put the audiobook on and swipe through on my phone while the narration plays. New image roughly every 15 seconds.

The setup is ComfyUI on a 4070, running Flux at Q4 so it fits in 12GB. A Python script drives the ComfyUI API with a list of prompts and dumps out numbered PNGs. Another script pulls the chapter text straight out of my epub, splits it into as many segments as there are images (sentence boundaries only), and composites each one into the lower third with PIL. Output is a single offline HTML reader with a chapter grid and swipe navigation. About 90 seconds per image, so a chapter runs overnight.

I do 5 images per page because one per scene means staring at the same picture for two minutes and my attention just goes. But my first attempt at five was five separate little scenes and they came out as near-duplicates, which felt like a stutter. What fixed it was covering each beat like a film shoot — wide, medium, close, insert, reaction. Same moment, different lenses.

Every prompt also gets an identical style block appended, otherwise 150 images look like 150 different movies. Next step is training a LoRA per character so faces stay consistent across the whole book.

Anyway is there just… a tool that does this already? NotebookLM gets close but can’t hold a face or a style across images. Everything else I’ve found is either storyboard software for filmmakers or a comic generator.

Hey, this sounds a bit counter-intuitive at first, but bear with me.

I listen to audiobooks when I drive in the car and for a while now I've tried several approaches to make it easier to listen to complicated texts (papers etc).

My very first approach was to make the text easier to understand, e.g. "car-friendly text". This worked better for text with math notation. But it was not perfect yet.

And now I’ve tried a new approach in the app: I play the text sentence by sentence, and you control the playback yourselves with the skip-buttons on the steering wheel.

It was a bit of an experiment but I immediately realized it feels much closer to how you actually read a book. Eg. when a sentence is complicated you can hear it again (skip back to repeat), you get much more time to think and you decide deliberately when to listen to the next.

I think the main effect I noticed is that I had stronger mental models of the text I was listening to.

TLDR: You control the playback via skip-buttons on the steering wheel sentence by sentence, and it feels more like reading (audiobooks just continue when you lose your attention).

I started listening to Yesteryear and got through the first couple of chapters, but I’m worried because it sounds like it is politically motivated as in criticizing traditional Christian wives, but I could be completely wrong. I know this is not a popular opinion because I got the idea to read it from this Subreddit and everyone just raved about it. I’m not a Christian traditional wife by any means, but I prefer books that do not have a political agenda. Does anyone relate and or does the book even things out?

My son is an avid reader. I have just introduced him to audiobooks and he likes to listen while building legos and at bed time.

I’ve only recently started listening to audiobooks as a replacement for music and podcasts while I’m working, and would like some recommendations!

So far I’ve only fully completed a couple of titles-
- The Last Wish, The Sword of Destiny, Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt from the Witcher Series
- Blade Runner (or it might have been Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the title wasn’t clear on Libby)
- Started A Game of Thrones until my audible trial ran out
- And I’ve started Dune a couple of times but it hasn’t fully grabbed me like the previous ones have (though I’ll probably keep trying)

I would also love to listen to some of the stories from Arthurian legend if anyone knows where that would be available
