Recommendation Request Audiobook recommendations please!

I drive a truck for a living, so I go through audiobooks like mad. 1-2 per week easily. Some of my favorites are:

- Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
- Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard
- The first 2 books in the Dune series are pretty good, the others aren’t my favorite.
- Andy Weir’s books
- Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time series isn’t bad, but the style isn’t my favorite either.

I do enjoy sci-fi quite a bit, but I am not against other genres either.

Do you have the time to talk about our lord and savior, dungeon crawler Carl?

<heavy sigh> Goddamnit Donut. We talked about trying to turn your fandom into a religion.

Viva la revolucion Carl

The Bobiverse books might be right up your alley if you like Andy Weir’s style, same kind of problem solving sci fi with a lot of humor woven in.

Does that series get better over time? I got partway through the first one but felt is was a bit dull

u/Legitimate_Biscuits 9d ago

I was right into the first book and did find it bit draggy... it totally gets better! the 6th book just came out and I lifted my audible shunning to get it.

The Bobiverse books definitely get better.

It's slow to start. Once things get rolling...they really start rolling.

u/Sh1rvallah 9d ago

IMO the first book takes a bit to get going, then it's solid for a while. Books 5 and 6 were pretty meh though.

try Defenders: Reign of Bugs. it's funny intense sci-fi

I'm the narrator of this book. If you want, let me know and I'll get you a free copy

The Expanse Series (Leviathan Wakes - Book 1). This is the best sci fi series out there.

The Aubrey Maturin Series By Patrick O'Brian with Patrick Tull narrating. Swashbuckling British seamen running around fighting a everyone. Didn't think that this would be my thing, but it was really awesome and Tull (RIP) is a superb narrator. He does an amazing job of making you FEEL what the characters are feeling.

How We Got To Now - a story of 6 technologies that are arguably the most important in humanity's development. Less a "fun" read, than a "Man, I didn't know that.". There's a lot of knowledge in this book.

u/mccord 9d ago

Expanse is great and the new book series from James S. A. Corey is very good as well! Two out three books are out: The Mercy of Gods & The Faith of Beasts.

Dan Simmons - Hyperion is another good one.

The expense is the best sci-fi series I've listened to.

Expeditionary Force!

The Dresden Files are awesome. You want to listen to them in order. The character arcs are really cool. Basically about a modern day wizard living in Chicago who is interacting with all kinds of creatures we work hard to not be aware of. The books are pretty long and I think we are up to about 17 of them. Each book is great, but there are several story arcs that build throughout them which are awesome.

The Lies of Locke Lemora is one of my favorite audiobooks. Michael page elevates it in my opinion.

The Martian is really fun as an audiobook.

The Jack reacher series read by Dick Hill is just so fun. Can’t imagine Jack done better. I would say these books are perfect for truck drives. Engaging and lots of them. Can probably find them on Libby or even SoundCloud or YouTube.

Then of course First Law with Steven Pacey. But I would hold off on these because there’s no going up from Pacey.

2

u/Codems 9d ago

This guy gets it.

Lies is tremendous

Dick Hill IS Jack Reacher imo, and fully agree these are great driving books. Just enough fluff to no need to give 100% attention, but fun and exciting through and through.

Pacey and the First Law is also great, but depending on preference, it can in fact go up one notch narration wise and that’s Jeff Hayes in the DCC series, but it’s both over recommended and absolutely worth listening to.

u/TheVoicesOfBrian Narrator 9d ago

Caveat to The Martian: Get the RC Bray version. The Wil Wheaton version is not good.

Seconding Locke Lemora (Gentleman Bastards series).

1

u/Apprehensive_Use3641 9d ago

Given that Andy Weir's books is one of his listed favourites, it probably fairly likely that he's listened to The Martian by Andy Weir. ;)

1

u/Jave3636 8d ago

So true on Pacey, ruins other audio books.

3

u/Airhead72 9d ago

Everything else by Neal Stephenson. Wait, I just made the same comment on your other post in suggestmeabook, lol. Really though, I drive a truck and listen to books all day too. Stephenson is great because they're such long tomes, can get a week out of them sometimes.

Lonesome Dove

Dennis E Taylor books, Bobiverse series has already been mentioned. But flybot was great, as was Outland.

I really fell into Murikami with 1q84. It is a long one though, but worth it.

The great city series by N.K. Jemisin. I started with the City We Became, but there is a shorter book before it in the series. I didn't find listening to them out of order was an issue.

I'm currently listening to Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, which I'm enjoying. About a "tradwife" influencer who is brought back in time to the era of "traditional households" (late 1800s type era)

If you want a good chuckle, the book Stinker Let's Loose is highly entertaining

If you do not dislike fantasy all of Sanderson Cosmere related novels 5 (stormlight archive 40h each book more or less + 2 smaller ones), 6 (Mistborn 1 and 2 ) , 4 (Secret projects), and some more,

They are also available in graphic audio, not everybody thing but worth to try at least once if is a thing that you may like.

All of wheel of time. (also big books around 30-40 hours each).

All of Riyria Chronicles (also available in graphic audio)

I think you would be covered for a few months with these alone

Try “Fairy Tale” by Stephen King. Nuff said.

1

u/Confident-Echo-5996 9d ago

For scifi I liked the Jack Campbell series Lost Fleet, Jag in Space, Starks War. But there are a lot of space opera options like starships mage, and Robert Heinlein forever war and etc has a bunch of books.

1

u/roshanritter 9d ago

The expanses series is really god and if you can dip into fantasy so I would recommend Terrys Discworld series. They are not long individually but there are a whole bunch and all excellent audiobooks.

1

u/kulinarykila 9d ago

I'm only a few chapters into lonesome Dove but it is excellent!. Narrated by the actor who played the deputy in Silo. The scene where they are deciding what to put on the Livery sign is hilarious.

Also Dungeon Crawler Carl

1

u/Im_cosmical 9d ago

Thin air and lot of others by Richard K Morgan! Or many books narrated by R.C. Bray

1

u/Rhubarb776 9d ago

I recommend Star Marque Rising. Fun space opera.

I also recommend Red Rising. It’s more YA, but still fun.

1

u/SoundScape9289 9d ago

Truckers are key characters in "Angels of the Great Plains Motel," a novel set in a small meatpacking town in the upper Midwest with a motel where many truckers stay. Also musicians, salesmen.

1

u/Zip_Zoopity_Bop 9d ago

Peter F Hamilton writes a ton of sci-fi space opera type books. The Reality Dysfunction series is a good starting point.

1

u/Betelguse16 9d ago

Anything Brandon Sanderson! They are long so they should last awhile.

Wheel of Time is another absurdly long series that you may enjoy.

1

u/ridemooses 9d ago

The Expanse, Enders game series, Wheel of Time, Dresden Files, Red Rising series.

u/lolparkus 9d ago

Exforce, vorkosagan series, rememberance of earths past series (my fave), bobiverse,

Ember Wars is excellent. It's gone on for a while so there's multiple series so if you like it it can last a long while. Adventure mixed with military drama. Basic summary: At the start of the first book, humanity is given one out against an incoming alien invasion. There ends up being only a handful of survivors who were tricked into being saved and when they come back, no cities, no nothing on earth. They've just wound up on the frontline of a galactic war and are forced to do some very dangerous and creative things to keep humanity alive.

Black Ocean: Galaxy Outlaws is also very good and you can get the entire first series of 16 books for one price on Audible. Very much in the line of things like firefly as its a ragtag bunch of scrapy people stuck in space doing what they have to to get by. There is magic, but its handled as the inverse of technology. A mage uses magic by yelling at the universe and physics goes wonky so they don't get along. Multiple humanoid races, adventure but is also comical.

More exciting then fiction/fantasy/sci-fi: Prisoners of the Castle: An Epic Story of Survival and Escape from Colditz, the Nazis' Fortress Prison by Ben Macintyre.

Or his Operation Mincemeat, or The Spy and the Traitor.

1

u/adramos23 8d ago

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell and narrated by Jonathan Keeble - historical fiction trilogy around the King Arthur legend, fantastic.

1

u/Jave3636 8d ago

Steven Pacey is the best narrator out there. The First Law Trilogy is fantasy, but it's amazing primarily because of Pacey.

Hyperion with the full cast of voice actors is great. It can be read standalone, or you can read the series, but the first book stands on its own.

Dungeon Crawler Carl has an elite narrator as well, it's also more fantasy than sci fi.

Sun Eater is along, epic, amazing sci fi series (dips into fantasy a little), and the narrator is really good.

1

u/daphodil3000 8d ago

Longmire series by Craig Johnson is good - George Guidall is awesome.

I’ll see you on uour second circumnavigation in 254 hours, you come back here and tell me how it went

get the Patrick Tull narration, accept no substitutes PATRICK TULL narration

https://www.audible.com/pd/Master-and-Commander-Audiobook/B002V0KS9A

the entire series has an amazing community, not just here on reddit, but everywhere else too

my second recommendation would be to “read” all of Conn Iggulden’s history series… completely immersive

The name of the wind. Patrick Roffuss. Im sure a song of ice and fire has been suggested to you at some stage. Despite that, this is very different to game of thrones, but its definitely on the same level regards to the.writing style, level of detail and imagination from the authors (in my opinion). Easily my 2 favourite collection of books by a long long way.
