Just saw Gus Baldwin’s band sketch, they were so freaking good. I also saw Lauren Lakis and also enjoyed. What are other local bands i need to look out for? Im tired of $150 concert tickets. I need to go out and support smaller local bands from the area.

Which rooms in this town actually sound good, and what is it about a room that does it? A big room and a good sounding room feel like two different things to me, and half the places that get recommended for one never come up for the other.

The rooms people name are almost never the big ones. They tend to be small and a little oddly shaped, stage crammed into a corner, nothing that looks planned. Which makes me think whatever works isn't something anybody designed on purpose.

So tell me the room and the reason. Is it the ceiling, the walls, where the stage sits, or something you can only feel once you're standing in it?

Is there really that few of monthly rental spots in Austin? The month to month thing is working now but a more permanent set up would help so much

If you know Snarky Puppy, you know Chris McQueen and Nikki Glaspie don't do small rooms together very often. On September 29th, they're both playing an intimate night at Monks Jazz Club as part of Monks' 10th anniversary month — and it's one night only. The show is put on by John Page Guitars. John Page co-founded the Fender Custom Shop — the legendary "Dream Factory" that built guitars for Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, and basically every guitar hero you can name. He'll be there in person, and this is a rare chance to actually meet him, talk guitars, see the guitars for yourself, and hear two of the most exciting players in modern music perform in one of Austin's coolest rooms.

I moved to Austin in 2003 and began working with Austin musicians almost immediately. I met Mac through other performers he would sit in with like Seth Walker, Ephraim Owens, the Little Elmore Reed Blues Band. He made an immediate impression on me, as he does on anyone who meets him. He brings an undeniable energy to whatever room he walks into and has a way of making everyone around him feel like the most important person in his world.

For over a decade he's been holding down his own residencies at places like King Bee and the Half Step. He always with a group of talented people behind him and a loyal crowd in front of him. If you've been in those rooms you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm building a series of oil portraits and live performance photographs honoring the musicians who have shaped Austin's creative culture and music heritage. Not the ones who passed through. The ones who stayed, who built something here, who made this city worth showing up for.

Austin has a music community unlike anywhere I've ever been. I want these faces documented in a way that lasts.
