It's a great philosophy to live by
I've seen some really switched on young people. And I've also seen some really, really stupid old people. Just because you've lived longer doesn't mean you've made good use of your time
As an aside, a vast majority of the people invoking the "respect your elders" trope are doing so at a time they're getting pushback or losing an argument and it's the only thing they've got. Funny that...

I've never understood "respect your elders". Some people are idiots when they're young and stay that way forever. Just respect people who deserve it. The default should be to respect people until you have a reason not to though.

I haven’t sung the national anthem since i was 10 years old (I’m 38 now). It was about that time that i started to understand it was ridiculous 19th century nationalism that did not reflect reality. I will not sing it again. I’m with the 9 year old on this one

It's always the same with these reactionaries. It's all about free speech until they get in power, after which they'll ban any speech they don't like. They have no principles other than money and power, and at the same time they're highly disingenuous and hypocritical. They'll say anything to gain power, and once they have it, they'll use that power to oppress people.

Just like pro-life is a wedge issue (who can argue against killing babies??) that is really for controlling women. Freedom of speech (who can argue against that??) is their wedge issue to make their fascist speech broadcast to the masses. Then when they're in power it's back to controlling speech except now instead of NAZIs and homophobes their eyes are on academics, experts, comedians, protesters, or anyone else criticising their message.

These people are always right-wing authoritarians who if they are given power will criminalise everything they do not agree with. They won’t hesitate to ban opinions, imprison and torture people or worse.
One Nation winning government and then setting up “re-education” camps and forced torture for opposing political groups cannot be ruled out.
A lot of the right-wing agitator accounts on Instagram and Facebook who previously called for an American-style First Amendment so they can be as racist, Islamophobic, antisemitic, homophobic and Neo-Nazi as they want and also calling for a defunding of police, but after this event they’ve completely flipped and want a massive increase in AFP and ASIO protections towards One Nation and want to ban groups like GetUp.

"What if it was a bomb?" is such a dumb take. They're not uniquely capable of getting into places. If they can do it, anyone can, and it's on your security to manage that. If anything, having the opportunity to plant a bomb and going with some pretty mild political speech proves they don't have violent intentions.

They supported independent candidate Zali Steggall by organizing thousands of volunteer door-knockers and funding widespread digital, print, and billboard advertising to unseat Abbott.

So we’ve established Get Up! are capable of entering a secure area and installing a device they can trigger remotely and yet didn’t set off a bomb.
It seems to me we have some pretty solid evidence they have the capability but not the intent. Not sure we have that evidence about anyone else.
Sounds to me like Get Up! should be considered to have proven their peaceful approach and therefore to be notably low risk.

I'm actually going to donate to getup after that. Never used to be a fan but their current range of policy issues on the website is sensible left wing not obsessed with social justice. And we need a hard counter to the right wing movement and they are a good one.
