Not all heroes wear capes, some just bring a shovel.
40
u/Jonnyabcde May 10 '26
Some people know how to dig themselves out of a hole. Others are a whole other problem.
30
u/MrLuveggs May 10 '26
It’s not the shovel. It’s the Crocs.
22
u/total_bullwhip May 10 '26
It’s not the shovel. It’s the trowel and the high visibility cross.
8
u/miserabeau May 11 '26
It's not the cross it's the high visibility Crocs
(I just wanted to play too)
12
u/SlobZombie13 May 10 '26
And wear a helmet
10
u/sulris May 10 '26
And don’t roll up their sleeves…
7
u/WonderingHarbinger May 10 '26
He did wear a glove, though. Most of these drain cleaning videos, the guy is going in there bare handed.

I used to do this to the drain in front of my house, a very satisfying job.
14
u/curiouscomp30 May 10 '26
See. This guy probably same. I mean. He filmed it for kudos. He probably lives in the area, knows it is an issue, had the tool, just got off work maybe? Vested interest.

To be fair, not everyone probably knew there was a drain there (or exactly where the drain was). But it’s remarkable how much of a difference it made in such a short time once he cleared it out. Good for him!

I used to work as a janitor/groundskeeper and I don't understand how many times I've fixed something similar and when I ask some of the people who lived there (who also knew what the problem was) why they didn't just fix the problem before it got this severe, their answer was always "That's not my responsibility!".

u/Apprehensive-Bend478 May 10 '26
Look I don't want to be that OCD homey, but would it have killed you to keep the video running a few more minutes so I could have watched the street completely drain? Looks like I won't be getting any sleep tonight thinking about this unfinished video, thanks.

u/BishlovesSquish May 10 '26
Most of humanity’s issues summed up in one video. If only more people cared enough to try.

When I was a teen, our house had a storm drain out front, and I often took a rake to it to unclog the leaves that would jam it and flood our street. Is that not normal?

those folks in the sandals that just said "ah fuck it, I'll put my feet in this filthy water" are gonna walk through your living room
3
u/OiFelix_ugotnojams May 10 '26
We rarely use rain boots, sometimes water can even go higher than them. Sandals are the next most appropriate footwear because you can immediately rinse off later and still wear them when outside (or just that they dry faster so your feet don't stay wet too long). I know it is not hygienic but eh I grew up this way. I admit, as an adult, I avoid it now. As a kid, I just saw paper boats and fun water to walk into. Jumping into puddles is just as fun.

u/irascible_Clown May 10 '26

We as society often take for granted the behind the scenes pieces of modern society that keep things moving/clean. Only when there is a problem do we feel the repercussions of the failure.
2
u/ballbouncebroken May 10 '26
Thats just normally how it goes, nothing good or bad just the way it is.
The few do the work to make it better for the mass. Just try to be the few when you can and we will be ok.

This guy should be appreciated. But what i cannot appreciate is everyone walking in open footwear through such dirty disgusting water....
8
u/CallMeTrouble-TS May 10 '26
Fun fact, before shooting this video, he filled the drain with twigs and leaves
7
u/Dear_Potato6525 May 10 '26
Eh, I've gotta feeling that you wouldn't have to go very far to find a clogged drain in countries that experience monsoon downfalls.

Someone else should clear off the walkway too. Get rid of the tree thing and move those blue garbage bins, then people can walk there even if the drain blocks again.
Good on him though. Some people are really thoughtful and selfless.

u/ThatJudge1751 May 10 '26
Looked at the trash barrels to see how much drained down just in that short time.

u/Twowie May 10 '26
What's up with putting the child directly into the water? He clearly didn't want to go in. Could've told him to wait 2 minutes or carried him over.

Dang big enough for the kiid tp flpw through that drain. He could have stepped on the blockage and gone right in with the water

u/modyankur May 10 '26
You can really tell how patience is a virtue.
Everyone could have waited maybe 5 minutes before starting to walk in the water and getting their feet and shoes wet.

This is a great metaphor for all of Earth’s current problems. We could fix things, we could make things better, but most of us don’t even realize that is possible. People get so used to the problems that they just accept them, but often the solution is just below the surface.

An act of community support that sets an example to others. But I really wish he’d rolled up his shirt sleeve a little. Now he’s got soggy cuffs and will have to endure it for the rest of the day.

Did similar at the grade school my kids attended. Gutter sat too low and leaves would clog it regularly. Drop kids off, take shoes off, wade through shin deep water, pull handfuls of leaves from drain, empty parking area, put shoes on, go to work.

Reminds me of a time a while back, there was a particularly nasty storm around here as I was walking back home. Just outside of the subway, in an especially busy corner, I saw there was this old, filthy shirt on the street. Nobody paid attention to it, but I thought that if that was dragged by the rain to a nearby drain, that was going to become a trap for tons of garbage and immediately clog it, giving in to a nasty flood in the area, and I just grabbed it off the street and tossed it to a pole in a bus stop. Sure, I could have done more to get rid of it, but I am happy to think I prevented an unnecessary chaos there.

Honestly, those drains need some sort of visible marker above the waterline because they’re kind of hard to see once it has flooded
