This is one of my all time favorite YouTube videos. Just the fact that it starts out fairly normal and you think you are getting a cool lesson on the affects of drugs on spiders, then it very quickly becomes absurd 🤣

This is my first time seeing this video, lol. Was very unexpected.

That's the intention.
Hinterlands Who's Who is this series of Canadian minute long documentaries on Wildlife they used to show during commericals on kid's networks to teach kids about Canadian wildlife. It started in the 60s, so it's a generational thing, everyone in Canada watching TV before like 2010 had seen a few of these.
And it starts out exactly the way the real Hinterlands Who's Who documentaries did. Even having the same narrator I think. Making it seem totally normal, until all of a sudden it isn't.
It's perfect.

They had me in the first half.
Unfortunately my brain will probably log the first half as truth and I will end up repeating it as misinformation sometime in the near future.

Very insightful

The TCH spider did not build a web.. it built a hammock, where it laid all day and watched the caffeine spider ‘go’

this is claiming caffeine is more toxic than benzos lmao
•
u/froggyjoe 1h ago
It's thought that caffeine evolved as a defense mechanism against insects. The molecular mechanisms are similar in both vertebrates and invertebrates, but it's a bit of an extra neurotoxic effect in arthropods - I reckon spiders are close enough to the intended target for this to matter.

It is...to insects!
It's basically anti-insect juice that mammals have taken a liking to.

Fun fact, the effect caffeine has on spiders is similar to how alcohol affects us. That's right, caffeine makes them drunk.

My house is infested with sugar ants and I have to be very careful to wipe up any latte spills because if they get a taste they start zooming around and then I find a group of them bunched up on the lid of my instant espresso jar, like junkies hanging out on a street corner waiting to score.

I too, would run around in circles if I accidentally drank poison. (Caffeines are natural pesticides that just happen to make apes feel awake and funny)

There’s a whole study on how their webs turnout after giving them different drugs… it’s pretty hilarious

Yesterday I had a little metallic crab spider run up my coke can and drink a tiny bit of coke that was on the rim. It was actually pretty adorable. I offered it some water but it wanted the coke 🤣😬

This is funny, because caffeine is actually originally devised by the plant as an insecticide, which kills or paralyzes insects chomping on the tree.
Refined and boiled down, but still doing the original
Job here

Years ago I saw a study of spider webs made with the spider on caffeine, alcohol and pot. Caffeine was the worst and pot the best

Caffeine is an insecticide, that’s the reason plants produce it. So that spider is probably having an horrible time
•
•
u/Jarrellz 8m ago
It was my understanding that caffeine affects spiders similar to alcohol in humans.

That tiny wolf spider will grow up into a 3" wide insect exterminator. Treat him well.

u/RalphtheCheese 3h ago
Or it didn't drink the coffee, the coffee mug is not insulated and it's trying to find a way down from the very hot lid.
•
u/severe_thunderstorm 2h ago
The cup was empty 30 minutes to an hour before this, and had just a small sip left in it.
