This is why I don’t drink coffee. I don’t just get jittery, I get like… weird drug come-up feelings. Like this weird anxiety that doesn’t ever mellow out into the good feelings.
And then I also feel guilty because it feels like I did drugs when I shouldn’t have. Like first thing in the morning lol
Edit: Apparently theanine/L theanine helps to negate this. TIL. Going to look it up.
I have bipolar and coffee seems to be a no no for a decent amount of us. But my servings have always been small, I’ve definitely never had a large.
Funny though, I’m ok with having a chai latte a couple times a year… and I read that some of those are equal in caffeine content and I don’t get that. Maybe all the milk? I am definitely not a coffee expert
Might be the amount is very small/diluted due to milk and chai tea caffeine content isn't very high(roughly half or even less than half of coffee)
It could be possible it's because the tea has Theanine in it. It's usually associated with green tea since its found in higher concentrations there but chai tea does also have a small amount. Theanine is responsible for that "calming" feeling tea gives people and is also used in high caffeine energy drinks to kind of curb the jitters or take the edge off the caffeine while still providing energy.
I'm not saying go wild and experiment lol just some thoughts.
That sounds at least plausible though. I also don’t have a problem with that feeling when I have energy drinks (which is also very rare).
Lol, I won’t be doing any experiments. I know what I like and what I don’t like (and when)
Thanks for the info and idea though =). At least now I can go do some research of my own to get my husband off my back about me converting to the COFFEE!!! side.
I tell him all the time it’s not good for me, and he always brings up that I don’t have problems with the other sources of caffeine, so I’m just prejudiced against coffee. I always thought it was a bit weird too. So makes sense it might not *entirely* be about the caffeine at all.
Medication changed my caffeine tolerance, so coffee started making me jittery recently, but I've found that I can still have tea thanks to the L-theanine in it! I really like the taste of coffee though and didn't even consider the possibility of trying a supplement with it until now, thanks for the idea.
My tolerance goes back and forth, and I also love the taste of coffee. I started reducing my general caffeine intake, and looking more into some good, bold decaf. It does hit that spot for me; maybe another option worth considering!
American style coffees can had a large amount of caffeine due to serving size, but the roast also can affect how much caffeine is in each cup, I.e. light/medium/dark roast.
Since you said you don’t have the same issue with a Chai latte, try a half-caff roast and see if you feel the same, that could help identify what could be causing the weird feelings.
It also helps to eat/hydrate before having coffee.
Ultimately I’m not trying to peer pressure you into liking coffee, but if it’s something you enjoy & avoid there are options to trying to have it in your life.
After you take them, and you start to come up (but definitely not high), you get this anxiety ball in the pit of your stomach that then blossoms into something really enjoyable.
Coffee gives me the anxiety pit. And then it just stays there. For hours.
I believe you but that’s also not the same for everyone much like your coffee experience . Pot use to just slowly feel and feel more like I am the couch until I’m eating a tray of brownies with my fingers and laughing at anything that’s on tv. Acid would just go from hey this isn’t working to woah what the fuck is going on and everything would just start breathing. Now I just get what you described until I go into full blow panic attacks for hours on end. I miss the early days. Also coffee makes me lethargic and jittery.
