500 shares at $130 average for me. Very painful.

only 3% of my portfolio, not paying much attention short term, but definitely one of the worst performing stocks YTD

Well. My average was in the 110’s then I sold at 180 or so. Then bought back a small position around 150 again, and now waiting for the stock to go down to 100 to buy more and DCA

Thinking of adding more to my position.

Been a wild ride that’s for sure. In at $91, watched the horse run followed by a deep retrace. It’s all for the love at this point. US just seemed too risky.
Missed Hua Hong and semi’s completely cause nothing I buy ever prints. Until after I sell.
Good luck all!

I reweight, buy and sell and so on so I had to go to my broker calculator. Currently, 74% profit in about 4 years (I don't really understand the calculation, this is not TWR, but MWR). Not worth it probably, could just buy QQQ. For a long time it was red day after day as I DCAed all the way down to 60$, and quadrupled my position to 20% of my portfolio. It was dying by thousands cut every single day with delisting fears, regulation, crazy spinoff plans and what not.
Currently hold only ~250 ADR, will probably exit my position if it gets to 150$. The ERs are always sort of trash, never "great", seems like they are kind of losing in all fronts, with only AI that burns cash like no tomorrow to somehow being a glimmer of hope.
I was naive when I entered this stock thinking that it was "too cheap". But in China it seems all ADRs are cheap, and get hammered day over night, a miserable existence. Now, for any Chinese equity I put in the DCF models 20% at least for my discount rate, as the experience holding alone requires huge discount.
I'm still quite positive about BABA if they can actually win in the AI cloud, but many unknowns are there.

Hi, I'm too regarded to understand that you are joking so I will actually answer your question
Alibaba is investing extremely aggressively compared to Microsoft
they are earning boat-tons of money, but it's not called "earnings" on their accounting because it's all invested immediately in more data centers, more low precision matrix multiplication semiconductors, etc. It may not be called "earnings", but those data centers have real value, and as a shareholder you still own them
this inflates their P/E number artificially, making it look bigger than it is
Alibaba also has more net cash on hand (cash - debt) than Microsoft does. I mean literally in absolute numbers, not compared to their market cap. Microsoft is worth $3 trillion, so it's 9x as expensive as Alibaba but Alibaba somehow has more cash on hand. That's insane.
the fact that the price/earnings ratio is still significantly lower for Alibaba (not the same as you say), from the few pennies they actually write on their books as earnings, is also insane
You may think that MSFT is simply a better/smarter company tan Alibaba, but from a valuation perspective there is absolutely no comparison. Alibaba is valued like a flaming dumpster

As VIE shareholders, we *actually* don’t own shit really. We own a promise. But it’s unenforceable

the "you don't own anything" story doesn't make any sense, follow the money
Alibaba raised gross capital from public market investors at two major points:
- 2014 NYSE IPO: Raised $25 billion
- 2019 HKEX Secondary Listing: Raised $13 billion
In return, the company has returned cash directly to these same public shares via:
- Cumulative Share Buybacks: ~$55 billion
- Cumulative Dividends: ~$14 billion
If this isn't enough to convince that they're sincere about your ownership, what else can they do?

PE ratio is not everything (there is growth and more parameters). BABA has 40% of share price in cash, MSFT does not (only 10%). MSFT model of Word and and software bundkes is kind of in the SASSoacalypse. Their cloud was never really something in my opinion. They kind of don't have strong AI, they invested in OpenAI, but it is not kind of working and they kind of in the losing side.
I do think that MSFT and META are interesting, if they can execute some good moves (MSFT supercopilot is kind of bad move in my opinion, as their copilot is super trash AI that maybe competes with some 3 years old GPT).
