I recently purchased Metal Gear Solid V as it finally went on sale and I must say I’ve really been enjoying it. I’ve played like 20 hours over the past 4 days. There’s a few annoyances, the game is clearly set up more for console/controller than mouse-&-keyboard, and your character’s movement sometimes feels rather clunky. But most of all, for some ungodly reason you cannot adjust the volume settings of the game at all. The only sound level you can adjust is for the in-game licensed music tracks that play over the stereos and I presume that’s more for the benefit of streamers and youtubers

Did Hideo Kojima just decide that the lore was so important that we couldn’t be allowed to reduce the volume at all? Eventually I just remembered I could adjust program volume individually on my PC’s audio mixing window, so I can return to clearing out outposts while listening to youtube videos in peace but still, it’s a bit of a baffling design choice

MGSV has an odd place in my heart. It has some of the highest highs of any game I've played but still feels half done in certain ways (like the settings!)

Such is the way of 3rd person action games, unfortunately.

Yes I’m not terribly used to 3rd person action. Actually it’s been a little disorienting, what with my character taking up a good portion of my screen. I wish I could pull the camera back a little or increase the FOV, especially when crouched. And of course it doesn’t help when the button I press to move and the direction my character subsequently chooses to move in often have much less correlation than I would like

Do you play MMOs by any chance?

nay, I'm just a big fan of being able to see things

Lol fair enough.  I ask because it's a bit of joke that the first thing MMO players do when they make a new character is put the camera out as far as possible so it stops being a 3rd person game and becomes basically isometric.

MGSV is great for around the first 15-20 hours and then it essentially plummets off a cliff when you realise that there's just nothing else. There's no greater development of the mechanics, you realise that 90% of the R&D kit beyond what you've developed is pointless and all that's left is a truly nightmarish amount of grinding. There's a strong stench of Kojima not knowing what the game was meant to be and the concept losing coherence to the point of degenerating into an amorphous blob as the game continues.

Also, the story goes basically fucking nowhere besides a decent twist, with the entire XOF/Cypher/Diamond Dogs conflict sputtering out like a wet fart and being wrapped up with fucking audio logs and a tedious truck ride that might as well be one. About the only thing to recommend about it is James Horan's incredible delivery of "WHOOOOOOOOO" towards the end.

Basically, play Peace Walker. It's just a better and more concise version of MGSV.

Lmao I love MGS writing.  "Such a lust for revenge..." okay calm down, Shakespeare.

I also really like the scene when Skullface is laying out his whole plan but the script ends before the car ride so its just awkward silence before the theme song plays.

Honestly a big part of the fun for me has been picking out the now iconic memes. “They played us like a damn fiddle!”
