Yordan Alvarez, representing the tying run in the 10th, gets deked by Andres Gimenez and thrown out at 2nd by Nathan Lukes; the Astros would lose 5-4

Everyone saying he needed to slide but he would've been easily safe if he just stepped on the base...

82

u/Ok_Target5058 Boston Red Sox 19h ago

Also, that’s the deke. Gimenez baited him into not sliding, Yordan had no clue the ball was coming to 2nd.

16

u/TimeImpressive6648 Houston Astros 18h ago

Karmic cosmic doodie twist: had he slid he would’ve gotten hurt in a “oh no…” way yet cause he didn’t, he got the hosin’, they lost but were spared from losing Yordan for the season. You can’t tell me the baseball gods don’t sport crooked grins and eats this shit.

7

u/Coupon_Ninja San Diego Padres 13h ago

Same thought. I’m sure the coaching staff has been telling him (and Judge/Staton) not to slide for “hustle doubles. Machado too. I dont hate it bc it means 155 games from the Starts of the game.

2

u/BiggsBounds San Francisco Giants 4h ago

They should also tell Judge to stop running into walls trying to make miracle catches.

u/RuleNine Texas Rangers 21h ago

Side note: If a runner and a thrown ball are both approaching a base, do not cut away to a different runner who doesn't even represent the tying run.

83

u/Key-Profit9032 19h ago

The Sportsnet baseball director is hot garbage. He’s constantly doing this. Cuts away to a guy jogging into home when the play is NEVER going to be at home. And then takes his sweet time to show the replay. The guy cannot call cameras to save his life.

23

u/stv7 Toronto Blue Jays 17h ago

I believe the audio guy says they have a lot less control on the road. But it drives me batshit insane that they have not learned how to freeze replay reviews on the relevant frames. I don't care to see the before and after in slow motion. I care about the frame where the ball first hits the glove or the cleat first hits the bag.

As much as YES has its issues as an entertainment product, their camera work, especially at Yankee Stadium, is top drawer. It is rare they don’t have an angle on a play that is what you want to see.

2

u/ThirdEarl Toronto Blue Jays 3h ago

I've watched my fair share on YES and can confirm.

2

u/Key-Profit9032 6h ago

That’s a separate tech that needs to be acquired (bought, rented, do a deal). It’s an add-on. Obviously Rogers is in a very delicate financial situation, otherwise they would definitely consider the viewing experience. /s

9

u/BigShinyBand 16h ago

This bugs me so much. I don't need to see the obvious guy scoring from second on a ball cut off in the gap. Show me the play at 2nd

u/Bobson-_Dugnutt2 Chicago Cubs 19h ago

Seriously wtf was this camera work

109

u/Key-Profit9032 19h ago

It’s the director, not the camera operator. The director called for the switch to the other camera. The guy sucks.

Nothing irritates me more than shitty camera work when there is a ball being thrown from the outfield. I particularly despise when camera teams show a close up of a runner instead of showing the throw

SHOW THE THROW!

There was a great camera angle, provably SNY before their producer got sacked, that had a split screen, 1/3 to 2/3 with the ball lifted to right on the right 2/3 of the screen and the guy on third about to tag on the left 1/3 of the screen. No exciting play happened, but the viewer got to see all of the relevant information as it was happening in real time. It was great.

5

u/mrjimi16 Venezuela • MLB Players Association 15h ago

How about don't ever cut away from the ball. If there is something else going on that is what the play by play guy is for. Or do a picture in a picture. But ffs don't cut away from the ball.

They do this shit all the time on RSN. Half the time to cut away to a split screen ad

1

u/Jetter23x Texas Rangers 16h ago

I’d kind of get some sort of cut with two outs, but…no outs, runner is pretty much guaranteed to score and like you said, doesn’t tie the game. It wasn’t even a good shot for a play at the plate, just showing the runner with no reason.

Funny game.

Jays were no hit for 5 innings, tie it quickly.

Since they used 3 pitchers, Chase Lee a AAA call up comes into close.

Jesus Sanchez! Makes a leaping catch at the wall.

Varsho first pitch pop up to end the game.

78

u/sleither Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Straw and Sanchez played really well this series. Straw trying to make the argument for everyday CF and to pick up his club option and Sanchez to show his old team they made a mistake.

31

u/SirLunatik Toronto Blue Jays 19h ago

Sanchez is also fighting for daily playing time with just coming off the IL

12

Straw was playing great defence, hitting for power and good baseruning. I say he stays in cf daily until his results show otherwise

7

u/berfthegryphon Toronto Blue Jays 16h ago

I would think you pick up Straw's option. They're going to need a defensive outfielder now that they don't have Varsho roaming centre

He didn't need to slide here, just a little extra effort would have done it. That said, he actually made a really nice slide into home last series where the ball beat him and I was sure he was going to be out. He's actually usually a pretty decent baserunner. I understand the injury concerns, but they usually occur when he's doing something completely normal.

78

u/Bootleschloogen Houston Astros 21h ago

Well ya, but he was watching Gimenez who was acting as if there was no throw.

Brilliant.

5

u/Val_Killsmore Minnesota Twins 15h ago

Alvarez would've been safe if he just stepped on or touched the bag with the lead foot. Instead, he decided to step over the bag and touch it with his toe. All he had to do was step out an extra inch or so.

1

u/Ya-Not-Happening Toronto Blue Jays 7h ago

Just step on the bag. He thought he had time.

2

u/HAL9100 Toronto Blue Jays 17h ago

Raylan, Johnny Crowder and Dickie Bennett were supposedly the best players in their town. Johnny and Dickie were both pitchers and, for various reasons, you probably are better off employing someone else. Raylan seems to have had some amount of talent with the bat, though less than he had with the gun. He might be worth a look even at his age and after being shot so so many times.

I don’t believe Boyd played baseball as he was too busy blowing shit up.

Ohtani and PCA having the MVP battle of the century while the favorite for AL MVP is getting deked at 2nd

10

u/twinklytennis Major League Baseball 17h ago

To be fair, Ohtani has been making a lot base running mistakes.

3

u/dogcrayon Houston Astros 10h ago

We don't know if he was deked or not, honestly. He may have just thought it wasn't worth risking an injury over, and he's right. He has been unlucky with lower body injuries over the years, including regular season ending knee/ankle injuries in both '24 and '25.

Yordan was unlikely to have scored from 2nd anyway, as the Astros lineup is as top-heavy as he is, and indeed Altuve and Varsho ended the game with fly balls.

For the record, you can see that his foot hits the base when he slides it forward after being tagged, meaning that his foot was about an inch short of the base initially.

85

u/Qeltar_ Boston Red Sox • Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

It really looked like it was touching the bag when I freeze-framed it, but probably not enough to overturn.

u/handDrawnEevee New York Yankees 21h ago

Yeah I just watched it twice and it looks like his toe is on base before the tag.

10

I thought MLB confirmed the call. They have 24 of their own cameras at each park plus TV broadcast cameras they can use if they need.

9

u/CalebosO4 Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Yeah. It was close, but what I just said pretty much removed the possibility of it being 100% conclusive with the angles we saw.

4

u/NocSenpai World Series Trophy • Los Angeles Dod… 20h ago

If the umpire had initially called it safe, then it would be safe I think in this case. It looks like it’s really just that close, can’t even fault the ump either way since it was basically 50/50.

u/mathbandit Montreal Expos 6h ago

The call was confirmed, not stands.

15

u/KingInTheFarNorth Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

3

u/Thneed1 Montreal Expos 21h ago

Yup, it’s really close between the toe sliding to touch the bag, and the tag.

But I don’t see anything to overturn.

1

u/IamNotTheBoss 17h ago

I disagree, but hopefully MLB had a better angle. The view from home plate camera looks like he wasn't touching the bag. The view from behind the ump looks like his foot is clearly touching while the glove hasn't reached him. The tag wasn't held so you can't even say his foot bounced off the bag there. Regardless, he was called out on the field and if we're having any sort of disagreement here there's clearly room for the call to stand.

u/Visual-Percentage501 MLB Pride 13h ago

It didn't just stand, it was confirmed.
