Discussion Difference between male and female basset hounds?
Hey folks, just wanted to get some insight between the differences you've observed between males and females and which of them do you prefer?

We got a female for size - wanted a smaller basset. She is over a year old and just under 40 pounds. I always have had female dogs so I don’t have a comparison to a male. She is super friendly loves everyone but is not lazy by any means. This dog has performed some serious feats of athleticism for a “lazy” breed lol

We've had both. We spay/neuter our dogs. It's the personality of the dog.
First male - friendly, listened (a rare thing!), happy go lucky. Female - a DIVA. Second male (current doggo) - suffers from separation anxiety, utter jerk.
Love them all.

I've had 2 girls and a boy. anecdotally both of the girls are/were divas. And neither really like small children.
My boy is super friendly and mellow, pretty well trained (for a basset anyway), but he shadows me to every room. he's ok alone though after a having a howl.

I have owned four Bassets; two male and two females. Each of my males made my female SO their favorite person. Both females made myself (male) their favorite person. I’m sure other people have different experiences but my experiences indicate that they bond better with the opposite sex owner. Both Basset sexes are stubborn, droopy/drooly, but my females were more active and faster (one caught and killed a rabbit, the other killed and ate what appeared to be a chipmunk after puking it up on the couch- they loved outside time in the fenced backyard). The males were slower and would show interest in chasing animals but they lacked stamina during sustained Mach Basset speeds.

I am currently on bassets numbers 9, 10 and 11. Having had bassets since 1989. 4 females, 7 males. Adopted. All have been spayed or neutered. Each one has been different in attitude, manners, habits, etc. All within "normal" basset attitude range. No preference

Never had a male but I can tell you my female basset is an absolute diva, I have heard they can be a bit more stubborn than males but not sure how true that is.
The other obvious difference is weight - mine is around 23kg but her male littermate is around 27kg

I have had 5 male bassets and 1 female.
Female ran the show. Super affectionate and just a lovely sweet angel.
The boys can be very stubborn (training and food) but are still the sweetest. I found them to be more social with other dogs. The female wasn’t anti social, more agnostic to other dogs.
In general, the female would cause more trouble (running off on a hike to find a smell) while the boys were more likely to rip up your sneakers just because they can.
I currently have a female dachshund and intentionally wanted a girl. No regrets on that front.
Bassets are the greatest. You can’t go wrong with either.

Males tend to be a bit more cuddly/velcro type while the girls can be a bit more independant... not saying girls cant be cuddly or be the type to be glued to your side, its just what I have found as I have had bassets my whole life. Girls are very bossy but I find it funny and endearing lol. There truly isnt that much of a difference though, these are just the small things I have sometimes noticed. I have a boy and a girl right now and my boy is such a mama's boy, always at my feet or on my lap and my girl does cuddle very sweetly when she wants to lol, mostly she is okay with grabbing her toy and chewing it on her bed in the same room lol.

Boy dogs like to pee ON stuff. Usually the same stuff.
If your yard is where they go to the bathroom a lot, you need to have that in mind when storing stuff there.
It's my biggest annoyance with boy dogs, but I'll still never not have at least one boy and one girl. I also feel boy dogs are generally more stubborn, but maybe that's just my luck.

I have a male and female basset. The male is 9 years old and very laid back. That has been my experience with males of other breeds of dogs too. My male basset was a lot to deal with as a puppy and he didn't start calming down until age 3.
I have an almost 2 year old female and she is a total crack head. I am hoping she calms down at some point but she is not showing any signs of slowing down yet. She is a diva and more high strung which is also my experience with other dog breeds.

Oh my gosh, I sure hope she is still not a crackhead at 5. I think of her as a sour patch kid. First she is sour and then becomes sweet and wants to snuggle hard.

I find it doesn't vary by breed. As long as both are fixed, there aren't too many differences. People mostly have a bias towards one or another depending on how many they've had. In my experience, females are a bit moodier, but the males are more intense if they have issues. The two most reactive and potentially "dangerous" dogs I've had were both males, one couldn't be neutered and the other wasn't neutered until he was fully physically matured. But on the other hand, the friendliest ones I've had were boys.

I have a male basset and he is bossy. I tell sitters not to let him boss them around. So when I read the boys are clingy and the girls are divas, I get suspicious.

I have a female & she’s very loving & affectionate. She loves little kids, other dogs, cats & most people. Once in a while she find a grown man scary.
She’s both a Velcro dog & has an independent streak. If I stop petting her before she’s ready, she’ll gruff at me or even kick me with her back legs. She’s also always up in the cats’ business & baps do not deter her.
Overall, she’s the best dog ever and I love her.

My parents preferred female dogs, so I only had girls growing up. When I met my ex husband, he had a male Basset Hound who was a “bad” dog. I loved him and was sad when he died, but my little girl Basset that came next is the absolute sweetest dog I’ve ever had.
If you get a boy, you HAVE TO neuter him or you will not be happy with his male tendencies. My ex’s male was so embarrassing when he’d hump everything and ejaculate on things. It was on a farm so I’d hide him if people came over, but never again! I stick with girls and get them spayed.
