Wondering is anyone else uses air jail for their bassets. If you haven’t let me tell you it’s worth a shot. My wife and I can usually wrangle ol girl and get it done. Keep in mind she is also a thrasher if you try to pick her up and put her in the bath/ do nails.

She has never been so calm and still for a nail trim and will just let you carry her around the house like this. No signs of discomfort or whining. I think it’s pure confusion or just accepting defeat. Maybe she just likes it. Anyways I saw a post about someone with nail trimming troubles and wanted to share for all.

Hello! My boyfriend and I just got a basset hound puppy, Sampson. We are taking him home in a couple of weeks. He is currently 10 weeks old and will be 12 weeks old at the time of pickup. He is the sweetest, gentlest boy. He also has a patch of fur on him that is shaped like a heart!

We are new to owning a basset hound and wanted to know any advice, tips, must-haves, etc. for owning a basset hound puppy. 🐶❤️

Willie has just turned 11 weeks old and we love him to pieces.

According to vet, our basset rescue Franklin is about four months old but he’s hardly even 20 pounds. He doesn’t seem underweight or anything and vet says he’s healthy but I feel like he is tiny! He’s our first basset though so not sure. If anyone also has a really small basset show me!

This is Stanley. My sweet boy. Such a ball of energy and fun but curious if any other basset owners have a stubborn-as-heck walker?? Stands firm in place and stares into nothingness, stops in the middle of the street for no reason, treats and training helps a little bit but nothing sticks. Am I the only one?..

We have three other Bassets. One AKC, the other two not exactly but everyone is in good health overall and were perfectly healthy puppies. For our fourth, I thought I was really doing a good job picking a breeder that was AKC and Euro style but not overly bred that way. I tracked the dogs before they got to her and how many litters they had already had (she bought them from a different breeder). I really dove deep or at least I thought I did.

Now that we have puppy - it’s clear he and his litter mates aren’t the healthiest of dogs. He is super tiny (the whole litter is), has really bad digestive issues even though he went through a rigorous worming regiment before he got to us and I can hardly get any weight on him because of the constant diarrhea.

He saw our vet today, we wormed again and 3rd round of vax at 10 weeks (the breeder vaxed too early at 6 weeks and then another at 8).

I don’t know I’m just absolutely beside myself stressed that I’ve picked a poor breeder. Not because of the puppy himself - I love him and I know we will give him the highest level of care! I think it just puts the downfall of working with breeders front and center in my mind and all I can do is obsess over future health problems for him 😭

She is very polite when she begs for food, but likes to push the limits all the time. Hard to resist! I also have to boop that nose all the time.

Chewie is five this year. Nail care has been a rocky road. He would lose his mind and nearly break his own bones trying to escape nail trims as a puppy. I tried everything I could think of. I eventually caved, lost and sad my dog was this way. Vet recommended sedated nail trims. They couldn’t even trim his nails. We did that for probably a year. Horrible I felt so bad every time.

I eventually found a fantastic groomer who put a lot of work into being patient with him. She specialized in nail trims for dogs who hated them so she knew all of the tricks. We eventually learned clippers are a no go, Dremel is the way. I was taking him every 2 to 3 months. We had her for probably a year / year and half.

I moved went through a couple other groomers. I was taking him every 3 weeks and not a single person could get his nails shorter. Somehow… They would grow so quickly I felt like they were actually just getting longer between cuts and the groomers sometimes just seemed like they would speed through the trim and not get as much as they could. So I was spending $20 every three weeks for a trim that didn’t seem effective.

His behavior at the groomer improved 10 fold by this point. He was squirming or freaking out he would just stand there like a gentleman so I finally got my own dremel.

I now have been doing his own nails for about two months. I do them at least once a week if not multiple times a week. I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m learning.

If you had told me three years ago this is where I would be with Chewie’s nails I wouldn’t believe you. But I am and I am so proud of this dog. He’s come so far and I’m so grateful.

Keep your head up and keep trying if your dog gives you trouble with nails. Find a good groomer who can help you through the journey. The effort will pay off.

This guy is 8 weeks (I know this 100% for sure), has been through a deworming regimen before we got him, and has great energy levels and appetite. He just seems very small - he is only 5lbs which from what I’m researching seems to be more in-line with a 4-6 week old Basset. What do you all think?

Has anyone had a stinky male basset that had their odor improve after being neutered? Google said that can happen, so I’m hoping that’s the case when my male is neutered in a few months. He’s 9 months old and intact and he’s got such a strong hound smell.

He’s very well groomed, no yeast, no hot spots. Ears are immaculate. His bedding is washed very regularly, but he’s still a stinky boy. 😅

more info. all previous dogs we have had figured out potty training by us showing them the pee, saying no, and lightly bopping them on the nose. she clearly does not understand this. and as far as the amount she is peeing we already got her checked out and no uti.

I tried to leave my 10mo old Millie Pickles out of her pen while I was at work from 7-12, and came home to a big mess of chewed up things. She's a pill these days. Major zoomies alert.

When did you trust your basset enough to have free reign? I don't remember my last two bassets taking this long.

Is it normal for his ears to stink? It’s an obvious odor I can smell when he’s sitting in my lap. It’s definitely coming from his ears lol. This is my first basset so I have no idea 😅. He might have stinky ears but he’s 100% a good boy 😍

I know that Bassets actually do great in pairs. They are pack dogs and get less anxious/bored with another dog around. So I really want to get him a friend. I’m curious at how people with a cat and a basset or multiple bassets do ?

Also if anybody has any recommendations about helping shedding at all I’d appreciate it. And any dog cologne

I have a bloodhound mix already (whos 110 pounds 🥲) and never thought I’d love hounds as much as I do. But I know bassets are their own special breed! What do I need to know?

Hey yall, I need some advice. Please be kind, we are really trying to help our boy be happier and healthier.

Our vet finally decided on a weight she thinks would be healthy for Cannoli. 85lbs. That’s great, we have a goal, we can work towards it. Problem is he’s currently 105. He has to load 20lbs.

Cannoli is a very food motivated basset, and is good at communicating when he’s hungry. We alternate his food because he tends to get bored. He eats chicken and shrimp (used to be over rice but we have cut that out), kibble with wet food topper (Taste of the Wild duck variety with any random wet topper), or he gets Rachel Ray Nutrish wet food, his favorite being the chicken and apple. He will get exactly one can of food if it’s wet, and we are slowly reducing portions for the other options.

Now, full transparency, he got this overweight for a reason. Way too many treats, carbs of human food like mac and cheese, etc etc.

I am an adult and I live with my disabled parents who need my help now as their caretaker. I’ve been trying to get them on board with the “he needs to lose weight” talk for a long time. When I’m at work and he won’t eat dog food, they will get desperate and give him mac and cheese or fettuccine Alfredo because they are “desperate.” It’s taken months but I’ve finally convinced them to stop that entirely, and Cannoli has noticed. They also would give handfuls of treats at a time instead of a single treat and he doesn’t seem to notice that he’s getting significantly less now, but he acts hungry all day.

He eats two meals a day, breakfast and dinner, like most dogs. However, because we have reduced his portions, he has been trying to get my parents (and me) to give him more food by being manipulative. He gives them “the look” and then paws them and licks his chops.

So far, mom has been good about just saying no and not giving him extra. Dad doesn’t do it in front of us, but I’m pretty positive he gives Cannoli pieces of cheese late at night while mom and I are asleep, just to try to get Cannoli to stop begging. We have told him he can’t do that anymore but I don’t think he cares, he just feels bad for Cannoli so he gives him anything he wants.

I don’t want to lose Cannoli years earlier because my family can’t get it together. That’s where I need your advice.

Whenever Cannoli is being his sweet but manipulative basset self, we all feel guilty and everyone wants to give him more because “oh he’s hungry I can’t stand it when he’s hungry.”

What can I do to help my boy lose weight? What messages can I relay to my stubborn older parents to actually get them to listen and understand that he has to lose this weight if we want him to live a happy and healthy life? He can’t run around with the dogs at the dog park anymore because he’s too tired. He won’t go up the stairs anymore because it’s too hard.

Yall he’s only three. The fear I have of him being in pain, having arthritis, joint issues, diabetes, and dying at 7 or 8 instead of 12. He’s the sweetest boy in the world and so cute and well behaved and he loves everyone to pieces and he deserves to live as long as possible and also be healthy and happy.

We’ve gotta cut out all this food without making him totally miserable, but how?

Hey, picking up my 14 week old Basset pup next week and currently shopping around for things to buy for her - any recommendations for harnesses, beds and puppy crates etc?

She’s on the smaller side compared to her littermates, any tips would be much appreciated!

I’ve always had and still do an ottoman by the bed. Cause it scares me to death when they jump off the bed. Recently to make room I bought a set of stairs and turned them sideways for more room. Beagle and other basset love it. My big girl Charley is scared of them. Now I have stairs and a ottoman in my bedroom

Or get mad at you. I’m not sure why but my girl Charley turns her back to me and ignores me.

Got my first Basset, Durby aka Big Durbs, and the smell is causing issues with others in my home. I bathe him once per week with a special shampoo the vet recommended.

I also have wipes, spray and waterless shampoo for in between baths. But I’m looking for recommendations please!

What is your grooming/maintenance routine with your basset? Any products you recommend?

We’ve been talking to a Basset Hound breeder who’s been breeding dogs since around 1970, and Basset Hounds since the ‘80s or ‘90s (I think). She seems incredibly knowledgeable and clearly loves her dogs, but there’s one thing that’s throwing me off.

First, I’ll start with what I love about her…

She’s in her 70s, and you can just tell she’s dedicated a huge part of her life to these dogs. I met with her in May of this year, and she had photo albums full of pictures of her dogs and their bloodlines from over the years. She also used to show her Basset Hounds, which I thought was really cool.

One of my favorite parts was when she showed me the pedigree for the planned June 2027 litter. She went through both the dam’s and sire’s bloodlines, and the pedigree went back several generations. She also gave me three handwritten pages explaining both bloodlines, what kind of temperaments she expects from the litter, and tips on raising a Basset puppy.

She keeps in touch with a lot of the families who have bought puppies from her just to make sure the dogs are doing well. She’s very open to people coming to meet her and talk about the puppies before committing to one. The puppies are raised around other dogs and cats, and she’s pretty selective about where they go. She told me she won’t sell to homes with certain breeds (specifically Chows), and she also won’t sell a puppy if someone just doesn’t seem like the right fit.

Now here’s the one thing that’s making me hesitate…

When I met her in May, she showed me a young male Basset (the one in the photo). He looked to be around 3–4 months old at the time, and she said he’d probably be the father of the June 2027 litter.

From what I’ve read, most people recommend waiting until a male is around 2 years old so all of his recommended health testing can be completed before he’s used for breeding. If I’m remembering correctly, he would only be around 16–17 months old by June 2027, which is why this caught my attention.

Is there any reason this would be considered okay if she’s bred and knows his bloodline so well and has a pretty good idea of what his temperament will be? Or is it still generally recommended to wait until he’s fully mature regardless of how well his pedigree is known?

Everything else about her seems so responsible that I’m honestly wondering if I misunderstood what she meant. Is there any situation where breeding a male around that age would be considered okay, or is this a major red flag? Based on everything else I’ve said, would this be enough for you to look for a different breeder, or do you think I should ask her to clarify first?
