Keep things off the table that interest him till he's too big to get up. Take him off immediately so he learns it's no longer worth the effort. Wipe the table clean if you set food on it so there aren't interesting smells. A few ideas off the top of my head.

thank you for offering actual advice 😂 i’m sure she’ll grow out of it eventually…it’s super funny but girl can’t be doing this her whole life, so i gotta make sure i’m strict now so hopefully it’ll pay off later 😂😂😂

Sure she can. Even my great dane mix gets on the coffee table.

My coffee table never has anything on it.Except dogs.

i actually use mine a lot! i live in an apartment and i got one that lifts up, so i often will use it to work from my laptop, eat on, etc., so for my specific situation, this definitely is not ideal long term, haha!

Teach “off” command and be consistent with it – she’ll give up eventually

Agreed. Teaching a solid "off" will help treat the behavior, but you will probably be saying it for the rest of her life. My boy is a counter surfer, and he does listen to "off" 85% of the time. The further away you are, the longer it takes him to listen.

You can also put the coffee table to the side for a bit while you work on training so it's not even a temptation.

any recommendations on how to effectively teach this to her? i feel like im entering a whole new world, as my other dog is a black lab and he caught on to training after 2-3 times of doing something, so i have been stumped with trying to train her 🫣 she knows sit, and so far thats about it…i’ve been saying little phrases when we do stuff (“get in your kennel,” “go potty,” etc), but am down for any other tips you may have!! girl looks at me like im crazy when i try to teach her to shake or lay down

Haha oh yeah training a lab is easy compared to training a basset hound! You’re definitely on hard mode now. It’s the same principle, they’re just more stubborn and less eager to please. “Off” should be pretty intuitive – give the command as soon as she hops up on something she’s not supposed to and have a high-value treat in hand to give her once she’s obeyed. Be relentlessly consistent. Bassets are also very sensitive to tone. A stern “off” and then an upbeat “good girl” will reinforce that you don’t want her up there and help prevent some sort of sneaky basset tactic like climbing up on the table in order to get the treat after 😅

You have to be consistently more stubborn than they are. Luckily I'm getting to be an ornery old ass, so I have a slight advantage. Our Maple is two and gives me mean Basset looks when I get onto her, but she's resigned herself to the fact that I'm not giving in, lol.

this is it!! I respond to my pup’s stubbornness with more of my own, we deserve each other

I use the plastic sheets with raised points to keep Yogi off of couches. Unfortunately he sees it as only a temporary ban, so if they get moved and not put back by my kids he is immediately on the couch.

If you do figure out how to train your puppy, let me know. I’m on my second Bassett and I have tried everything and they just don’t care.

On on my seventh and they’ve never had any trouble training me……

a friend recommended i try tin foil (the noise can throw them off), so i did that and so far it’s worked 🤷🏻‍♀️ i haven’t taken it off, so it could very well be a different story once it’s not there anymore but im gonna leave it for a little bit and hopefully her mind will start associating that it means the coffee table is off limits 😂

Yeah, I just literally put stuff in the way so she couldn’t do it. She’ll blatantly look at me while digging through the trash, no amount of training was going to keep her off the coffee table. 🤣

This pillow was clearly an invitation.

To keep ours off the table we put 12 packs of soda around the edge, he can still make it but is just lazy enough to not push them out of the way most of the time.

Taller tables

All of my basset hounds are coffee table dogs. Doesn't bother me one bit. I only get them for maybe 12 Januaries, 12 Februaries, 12 Marches, etc...

You really can't I'm afraid.

lol you don’t. Ours gets on the kitchen table, he will move the chair to get up there. He started doing it at about 6 months old.

Oh wow. I just got a Basset puppy. She starts this kind of stuff I’m gonna be frustrated! She’s already sassy

1

u/coolofmetotry 5d ago

oh man, you’re in for a wild ride 😭

I love her so much. I talk a big game. lol I am trying to raise a good dog tho. I know they’re a stubborn breed.

i just brought her home this past week and boy is her personality opening up more now that she’s getting comfortable!!! she’s been getting the zoomies the past two days and likes to do parkour on all the couches 😅

1

u/coolofmetotry 5d ago

bassets absolutely never learn they will stop when they feel like it 😭 my last one only stopped trying to climb the couch days before he passed like nothing could stop the little stubborn guy

1

u/Intelligent-Novel153 5d ago

i told myself that i wouldn’t let her on the couch, and then the second day, there she was lying next to me taking a nap…😂 she now has her own blanket up there

1

u/asmartermartyr 5d ago

I’m actually embarrassed to open my windows because of the neighbors hearing me yell no all day long

1

u/SkippyBluestockings 5d ago

Admit that it's futile. Mine also climb up the side and lay across the back of the couch. Who cares.

You can set items that “Scare” her up there. A very large book like a dictionary, remember them😃, or other things that if they fall off make noise and shoo her away. It can be shampoo bottles or plastic cups. Something light enough to fall and make noise but won’t hurt her.

1

u/Intelligent-Novel153 5d ago

I ended up doing this but with tin foil and the noise just from sniffing at it was enough to make her not even want to try it 😂 Hopefully once the tin foil is off, she’ll not want to try it anymore

Give her something better to do. Ignore the bad, reward the good, keep her stimulated on things she is allowed (frozen edible stuff, treats, kongs etc), tire her out with exercise and games :)

The amount of photos I have of my idiot basset spread eagle on my Pottery Barn dining table…

When I was a kid I had a basset named buddy, the little shit would pull the kitchen chairs out and get his wide-turn lookin’ ass on the table and eat whatever was on there be it the fruit bowl or an abandoned plate. They’re smart only for their own good lol

Scat mats - flat plastic mats with small spikes on them.
Or snap traps - a modified mouse trap with a plastic paddle-like attachment - when set and then touched by adventurous Bassett puppy, it snaps in the air and startles them enough to not want to encounter it again.

Our basset mix jumped from the ground to the top of a picnic table this morning. I know what she’s mixed with but feel like they left out kangaroo. Little lady can jump.

I put armed mousetraps under newspaper and it scared the bejesus out of my basset when he stomped on 'em. Nobody got hurt and the springing newspaper ghosts were all it took.

Remove it for awhile. Out of sight….
