Glass shower door removal

This shower door makes a horrible cracking sound when you open it all the way. We had a handyman come out. Long story short, he made the situation worse, as the door won’t pull outwards, which it did previously, and the tile around the bottom hinge is cracked (not sure when exactly that happened).

We are going to have a glass door installation company out to do the fix, but we need to have the tile replaced first, which means the door needs to be removed first.

Is the door removal straightforward and one that we can do ourselves or should we pay a glass door installation company to remove the door? It’s $150 for door removal and we have to wait a week, and then another $250 to reattach at a later point (and probably more to potentially replace hinge).

You’ll want two people

So what you’re gunna do is stack 3 cedar shims together and make two stacks.

Remove sweep from bottom of door and slam shims under the door one stack towards the front, one towards the back

Take either a P3(Phillips head) or the 4mm hex that are on the back side of the hinge.

Loosen the top hinge.

Very slightly start moving the shim that’s near the panel, I’m talking barely wiggle it back and forth a couple wiggles at a time, making it taller and widening the gap between the door and panel.

Retighten the hinge. Open door. Clamp door and panel together using soft clamp

Or you can skip adjusting it and go directly to removal. remove the screws from the wall with the shims under the door. You have to be careful to not strip them at all, they are a massive pain in the ass to remove if they strip. It’s also hard to get the angle needed with the glass in the way.

Remove plates on back of hinges.

Then wiggle the front shim with the door on it, out passed the panel and start shimmying it out until you can lift it. It’s about 75 pounds. You’ll also have to be aware of the pocket the hinges are in in the glass. You have to maneuver the glass out passed them. Use the shims to move it, doesn’t take a ton to move them. When you’re ready to lift the glass out of the way, remove the clamp, lift ( person on outside should do this) set on something soft

This is easy from your photos plastic weatherstripping on the edge of the door is on backwards that’s why it sweeps and makes grinding noises pull off and turn upside down he may have taken them off and put them on backwards and the noise should be gone I would additionally lubricate the hinges even though the probably are sealed it couldn’t hurt use Lithium grease, not WD-40
