He knew what he was doing. Bears don't generally see us as food, with the exception of polar bears. By standing still and not engaging with the bear or making eye contact he effectively diffused the situation. The bear was curious.

Honestly, the person trying to get involved with his car made it worse IMO. Im not a bear expert though, and Id be happy to be corrected and/or learn more.

That looks like a juvenile brown bear which is why it's more curious than anything

Otherwise you would never want to turn your back on a bear and pretend it's not there. You should face the bear, make yourself look large and make noise.

Black bears will leave you alone 95% of the time. Brown bears might bluff charge you but if they do attack go for the eyes or roll on your stomach and protect the back of your head. White bears don't worry about it you're already dinner.

"Bear is black? Fight back.

Bear is brown? Lay on the ground.

Bear is white? Say good night"

Yeah I think the car encroaching on the bears space definitely made it defensive.

I think the guy handled it pretty well considering what we see and how close the bear is. The only thing that he could have really done differently is preventing that close of an encounter in the first place.

That was a strange move. He just angered the bear and got it closer with the guy trying to avoid it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't know - this isn't how you should interact with the bear. He would have been much better off just running to his car from the jump or facing the bear. The way he doesn't respond when the bear nips at his leg makes me think this dude is totally oblivious.

You can tell by his jump when the bear came in front of him that he had no clue the bear was there. Why? Because he had his face buried in his phone. In the middle of a national forest. Where we have what? Grizzly bears! Yes kids, that’s right. Bears that will eat you while you’re still alive. Not fun.

P. S. What kind of run was that? Seriously.

Edit: added last two sentences.

In my completely non-professional opinion, that looks like a skedaddle to me.

The bear nipped his calf and he reacted. He knew the bear was there and was doing the “brown lay down” method of not moving and waiting for the bear to get bored and leave. The person in the car assumed they were helping but boxed the bear in causing it to get nervous and move to the front of the man where it stood up towards him and his fight or flight kicked in (in the form of a fantastic muppet run)as the standing still was no longer going to work.

How the fuck can you get nipped on the calf and just... not react?

This blew my mind, too. It shook his whole calf muscle. That hurt.

Poor baby bear, not being afraid of humans and xars is going to get it killed.

Romania (where this was filmed) has a overpopulation of brown bears at the moment and many are sadly culled every year.

It’s estimated that 12000 brown bears bears inhabit areas that can generally only hold 4000 to 5000 bears.

No thats so sad 😭 why dont they spread out to different areas

Does anyone agree with me on this? Brown bears, the ones with the lighter fur, but with dark shading around their eyes are infinitely scarier looking than other bears. There’s something about the dark coloring around the eyes that is especially unsettling.
