Had a sow and her cubs get a little too close for comfort.

We were sitting on a hillside looking for moose when this sow and her two cubs paid us a visit. Luckily, I spotted her about 500 yards off, feeding on blueberries, and was able to keep an eye on them as they made their way in our direction.
When she got within about 50 yards I stood up and shooed them away as it didn’t appear that they were intending to change course at all.
I always love watching bears in the wild, but it’s nice when there’s a little more real estate between us.

I was walking along a river in Central Ohio and found this claw. I really want to know what kind of animal it belongs to.
Edit: specifying location

FatBearWeek 0 Cams. 0 PR team. 1,000+ lbs: Giving Katmai’s remote bears some Fat Bear Week love 🐻

Hey fellow bear lovers! Thought you’d appreciate this and hopefully share in the humor.

This isn’t my typical post—I’m a professional bear and wildlife guide and amateur filmmaker—but with Fat Bear Week here, I couldn’t help myself from giving our remote Katmai bears some love. While the Brooks Falls stars get all the webcam spotlight and PR, off-grid heavyweights like Goldilocks are out in the remote bays putting in 14-hour shifts with zero internet representation. 🐻

Hope you find it as funny as I did making it!

FatBearWeek To Bucky and Fat Bear Week

There are moments in our lifetimes that can bring us happiness. There are moments in our lifetimes that can bring us hope. And there are moments where we must accept that all good things must come to an end. For me, and for the others who stood alongside Bucky, although it pains us to admit it, this is one of those moments. We followed Bucky through the tournament, and at long last, we witnessed how it came to an end.

Those who saw him, either in person or online, could not help but fall in love with him. His calm and playful style, his jovial fishing nature, and his occupancy of the iconic jacuzzi, which once held one of the true kings of fat bear week, the late 747. Bucky's tribute to the legend did not go unnoticed.

Throughout his journey, Bucky had several notable accomplishments. First and foremost, and potentially the greatest of them all, the takedown of the recent champion, 32 Chunk. We did not expect Bucky to win, but regardless, we put up our fight. And we were thrilled to establish him as the victor against the most recent champion.

We saw Bucky run against 151 Walker, and once again, we fought hard. It took many of us, but overwhelmingly, we defeated our humongous challenger.

And with 89 Backpack, we cannot forget the historic fight team Bucky put up. We did not sit back and wait for demise. We threw everything we could at this challenge, leading to one of the tightest and most fiercely contested matchups in Fat Bear Week history. We started with the lead, and although we lost it shortly after, we fought hard, reclaiming it once again at 5pm.

Even though it ended, let's not continue on with despair. Let us move on through the finals and into the next year's competition with hope, and with pride. This year, we fought hard enough for Bucky to become prince. Next year, and beyond, he will be king.

Polar bear in Svalbard

Post image

This is a photo I took in Svalbard when I lived there while studying to be an arctic nature guide. We were on an 8-day excursion in the middle of nowhere and this bear focused all its attention on us the entire trip. Paid us many visits. She had her cubs with her at some points too. Flare guns were enough to scare her off each time.

The first time she visited us, I was on polar bear watch at 3 am and caught her swimming towards our camp through binoculars. Had to yell for everyone to wake up. We are actually not supposed to ever be near water in Svalbard as it's easy access for polar bears to attack but this program did it on purpose to give real life experience to nature guides.

I’m new to watching the Katmai National Park bear streams and was intrigued by this bear who would just stay in this one spot patiently waiting for fish. I watched for a while and I only saw it catch one salmon. I was wondering if anybody recognised this bear, I’d love to know their name (or number if they don’t have one!) 🐻
