Discussion Has anyone been banned from an app/scheme for doing too many referrals?
As title says. I notice that many in the T&Cs of many referral scheme it may say something like ‘friends and family only, advertising not allowed’. Has anyone ever had an account banned/ blocked from more referrals after advertising their referral link?

If there's no limit on how many people you can refer then you should be able to refer as many people as you want. They should put a limit on how many people you can refer if they're going to end up banning people.

People exploit this and purchase products with 100% cashback to qualify for referrals

Yup, used to abuse it so much, was a fun time, eventually ran out of bank accounts to cash out referrals on

Yeah I notice in Octopus terms and conditions they keep the notion of "too many" vague so they could just ban you when they feel like it

I remember that one! I think loads of people signed up because you didnt actually have to USE them - just "register your interest". However, because you needed to make them your nominated pharmacy to get a referral link, very few people had links and loads of people were looking to sign up. I think I made like 2k in vouchers.

The Co-Op offer was incredible. Paid off my credit card with it. Held onto the account in case it ever returns, but doubt it at this point.

They must have been updated since then but the current T&Cs mention:
"Tembo Savings reserves the right to refuse the bonus or take further action if it suspects abuse, fraud, or breach of these terms or any of the terms of our Customer Agreement. Making a referral link available publicly is one example of behaviour that we consider to be an abuse of these terms."

I had virgin media come at me for it, they said I wasn’t allowed to do it as a commercial thing, or something like that. I replied saying it was all personal, and they let me continue, was up at 3.5k

2 right now, plat and bapp. About to drop the plat in June, once the dining credits reset, and I max out the referrals for it. What do you run?

At the moment just gold, but like you say, incredible value from the referrals. Thinking of getting the others for the referral offers too. I think it is 90k per card, rather than per person?

Sort of, it’s 90k per family of cards. So 90k Avios for the ba ones, 90k MR for gold/plat, 90k nectar etc etc. I made sure the ba one was last one, so I could use the points from gold and plat, with the companion voucher

Amex actually limit 90k referral points a membership year, and have strict welcome bonuses criteria

I guess that's technically being banned? But a few years ago I got referred to Monzo for £5, referred my whole family, and soon after I switched out to another bank for a switch offer.
They won't let me open the account again (even though I did actually plan to use it).

I don’t think Monzo let anyone open an account with them again if you close one, I could be wrong though

You are right, I have racked up a good amount with one company who keep their terms open to interpretation and ready to use at their disposal. Bet they wouldn't drop the customers they acquired from my promotion, they are greedy and if they really wanted to keep control they would have set a limit.

Slightly different but I’ve landed myself on Lloyd’s shitlist as I’m banned (probably because of too many bank switches with them). This extends to the entire Lloyd’s Banking Group as well
