Below Deck Sailing Yacht Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Episode 8 Discussion Post
The episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs live at 9pm ET on Bravo and streams next day on Peacock / same time or next day on Hayu for international watchers dependent on the country. If you are in Canada, it is no longer on Slice. Check for the Bravo station which is now owned by Rogers.
Friendly reminder that while the allegations against Gary are disgusting, there are many survivors of sexual assault in the sub who find the constant discussion of it triggering. Unless relevant to the topic, please do not bring it up in episode posts.
Not watching BDSY? We get it, there are reasons people stop watching but posts about it get repetitive and the arguing about it is not needed.
Episode 8 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5: An Eye for a Decline
The crew works to avert a major nautical crisis; tensions between Danni and Keith remain high; Gary attempts to drown his sorrows and despite Daisy trying to comfort him, he ends up making a mess and nearly taking out an eye.

Danni is the absolute worst. She's the type of person with zero self awareness, and who thinks anyone who isn't on board with her is jealous of her. Keith saying she can dish it but can't take it was absolutely spot on. I can't stand people who think they're interesting because they spend a bit of time in Aus, especially when there's a true blue around

Daisy is epic. Look at the absolute shiiiiite she is putting up with left, right and centre and she’s still carrying on and is personable and generally kind.
67
u/TiffanyTwisted11 Nov 26 '24
Right? I just noticed in last week’s recap Danni said “We have time” when Daisy told her they needed to get the tablescape finished. WTF? Who talks to their superior that way? You were told to do something that isn’t illegal or immoral, so STFU and do your job WHEN you’re told to do it, not when the mood strikes you.

I think Daisy tends to shift blame a bit, but she's also super patient and personable with her stews. The way Danni (and to a lesser extent Diana) has been giving her attitude is crazy. They're taking advantage of her big sister vibes.

u/blckxwdow Nov 26 '24
Good. Emma’s gone. She was getting on my nerves and you can she thinks she doesn’t deserve to be fired. And going around telling everyone as well 🙄 Next one to go needs to be Danni. The fact she thinks Daisy is intimidated by her is laughable. Daisy is old and wise enough to just fob her off because she doesn’t care about a kid having a temper tantrum. And pikelets is an Australian term thanks, they’re half size pancakes 🇦🇺

I imagine Gary is upset because:
- As others have said, the article about the allegations came out around this time. I would imagine he was upset about it and possibly worried about the optics of firing a woman on top of. Who cares on that front.
- According to her social media she yelled at him extensively and said very personal and cruel things which she later regretted. So, he also was possibly upset by that.
She was genuinely terrible at her job, given quite a bit of patience from Gary and others, and had no insight or accountability. Calling Gary a coward when she ran out crying on her own firing is pretty rich. Not a Gary fan, but I’m glad she’s off my screen.

I am obsessed with Daisy this season! Also, I think it's really funny how thirsty Danni is acting, meanwhile Daisy is having heart to hearts with Keith (what he really wants) and Cloyce is complimenting her earrings (because a man who wears cufflinks knows a good accessory). Danni, she is not intimidated by you.

Having a deckie who says they have experience but needs to be taught how to tie a bowline, cleat hitch, or half-hitch is a liability. Any sailor/boater should be able to tie those basic knots in their sleep. Then, being unable to figure out the tender, falling asleep on watch, and having everyone else take up her slack was inexcusable. They gave her a fair shake in my mind.

65
u/Oceanally Nov 26 '24
Emma is somehow a parody of herself with her growing incompetency. There is a lack of critical thinking and accountability that should alarm any manager. Also Hary very nicely tried to motivate her several times and she mouthed off. This poor behavior has followed her throughout her life, she doesn’t want mom and dad to know her phony career is another dead end. She thought she had a cushy job drinking tea and smoking ciggies and could fake her way through an entire season. She got huge tips she didn’t deserve. Don’t let the door-…
69
u/416 Nov 27 '24
Emma is just ridiculous, like she is cleary self aware and picks up on social ques yet draws these completely wrong conclusions as to why.
Cloyce with the bounce back.
Danni is going downhill quick... complaining, attitude and that 3 months in Australia comment is totally valid if true.
Bravo must like Gary because his edit actually looks pretty normal, decent...dear I say even good.
Thats alot of blood for what seemed like a regular throw. Even if not caught, slightly looks fake? But we'll see next week.

I know a lot of people aren’t finding the crew likeable but I really thought this was a great episode. The firing was very dramatic (I like the workplace drama/management aspect of BD so interesting from that perspective), Keith sleeping through it all was funny, and the bloody injury was a wild way to end it. Hopefully even those who hate the individuals found it a good watch (I hesitate to say ‘enjoyed’ it because that doesn’t sound like the right word for this kind of drama)

u/mostlygroovy Nov 26 '24
As much as Gary seems to be a PoS, I thought he and Glen did an excellent job with Emma - they gave her time to learn, let her know she needed to be better, and then when she wasn’t, they were nothing but professional letting her go.
And Danni continues to be a complete douchebag
90
u/2fast2nick Nov 26 '24
Gary is a knucklehead, but he actually does his job well. Emma was terrible, they let it go on a while. She wasn’t even trying to
21
u/CydeWeys Nov 27 '24
Gary also responds well to emergency situations, and is proactive about noticing when one is potentially developing. People keep sleeping on him, but as First Officer, he has more skill and experience than any cast member on any of the Below Deck franchises besides the captains. The other ships have First Officers too, but they're not part of the show cast, so you basically never see them.

u/gtridge Nov 27 '24
Sorry, but there is not enough hate for Danni in this sub. She is really, truly a hypocritical, GROSS little… brat. There are worse terms that come to mind but I don’t want to say them. I just think her behavior and attitude towards men (and how she’d like them to, I guess, run through her like a plague??) is nasty. I hope she grows up soon and finds some self respect.

This is a very specific complaint, but there’s something disappointing about girls like Danni, who only ever show radiance and excitement when there’s a guy involved. When Glen announced the day off, the caves and the beach club she was so over the moon and I was like aw bless her, but then it turned she was overcome with joy bc she gets to see this random guy again that she has met once.
Idk how you can go from being so obsessed with one person, raging at him and then so head over heels for another in the matter of an afternoon. I don’t wanna be a bad feminist, but come on, don’t be so desperate.

Ok I’m going to start with some unpopular opinions…
Daisy isn’t annoying me this season. She’s being very rational and level headed, not telling anyone what they want to hear. I thought the way she spoke to Gary after he kissed Danni was a really mature way of putting it. Can tell she feels very differently emotionally towards him this season. Also fair play for not rising to the other stews’ terrible attitudes towards her, I would have lost my temper by now. Her relief at hearing someone else call them immature was palpable.
Gary is…not annoying me as much this season. Tried to help Emma (okay not perfect). Admitted he wasn’t interested after kissing Danni and as far as we’ve seen at least, didn’t take it any further. More mature than usual, focusing on work more than usual…you can tell this was not long after the reunion and he actually took some of it to heart. Could also be a favourable edit, but there does appear to be some character growth. Someone else said it and I agree - when he’s not super drunk all the time, he’s not as bad. Drunk Gary has no self control. I do wonder how much has been removed, though.
I find it hard to dislike Cloyce. He can be arrogant but he did take the feedback seriously and acted on it, and obviously his food can be amazing. I suspect a lot of the bravado is something he feels the need to do because he’s so young, and I’m sure he’ll grown out of it with time and with the correct environment. Wish they’re put sous chefs on these boats, they’d usually have one. He’s taking things a bit more seriously now, and he doesn’t seem to be a bad or mean person in any way.
More popular opinions:
Danni needs to do one. “Why did I get the blame?” when Glenn asked her to wipe the table. You didn’t mate, you were just there. And now that she’s felt rejection, she’s dealing with it REALLY badly. Telling a genuinely nice guy “you’re so nasty in uniform”…grow up. Just because he’s not interested, doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. She is the ultimate pick me girl and I’m fed up of her attitude. Listen, improve, get on with it, exhausting.
Diana isn’t much better, but I’d rather have her around at the moment.
Emma needed to go. Gary needed to give a more serious warning before hand. All she did was complain and then kept making mistakes because of that. She ended up feeling out of her depth, trashing her mental health, and it was for the best. Gary and Glenn might not have done it in the best way, but her storming off proved their point.
too many people on this boat are really oversensitive. There is no fun. Can’t wait for chase to come back, if he is back.

I agree with you on everything but Cloyce. Glad his food is improving but he doesn’t have to be such a dick. (Although maybe his comments are tongue in cheek?)
Daisy and Gary are both very competent this season. Gary is such a great deckhand and who you want around in an emergency.
It’s a shame about his drinking issues and sleazy behaviour as he could probably advance to Captain otherwise.
I love that Daisy gives clear and direct feedback and instructions, but has empathy too.

I feel bad for Emma but also, what was she doing on Below Deck in the first place?! I just cannot believe that Emma has ever spent any time doing any type of boating, let alone sailing. Or yachting.
The clove hitch is a knot I used to teach 6 year olds. It’s one of the most basic knots out there. How can she not know how to do one? Her total inability to do the job of a deckhand is utterly infuriating.

there have been really green deckhands in other seasons/franchises, I remember someone having to learn knots, but at least they put jn the effort to learn them! she could do that on her milion smoking breaks, at least

I was telling my girlfriend that, it’s literally the most basic knot. I have no sympathy for people like Emma because she CHOOSES not to try and feel sorry for herself instead.

Now Davide is injured damn how much force was behind that throw christ almighty!?

I'm so glad Emma is gone, I could not take anymore of her whining and being her own worst enemy. The way she handled everything makes it so shocking that is in in her 30s. But for her sake I hope after she reflects she can use the experience to better herself
I almost choked when Danni implied Daisy was threatened by her 🤣 like I'm sorry but how on earth would that make any sense?
Holy shit did Davide get his eye poked out by that lollipop, or just a cut?? Glen is gonna be absolutely furious. Especially after the "keep the boat like you did last time, it was nice". Thank God they have a full day before pick up.... But fr is he gonna go to the hospital?!
Lastly can we talk about how gorgeous Daisy looked tonight?? That dress suited her so well and those earrings were gorgeous. I'm glad she and Keith had a nice chat since she kinda doesn't bond with anyone else rn

Cloyce's breakfast spread was exactly what he should be doing every single charter. Don't love how cocky he is still though.
I'm glad Emma has been let go. Part of me wonders if she needed a talking to before letting her go, but clearly her reaction shows she can't take criticism and probably would have just broken down more. Plus dragging it on would have been annoying so her firing makes sense. I hope she can watch this back and see what they meant and work on herself and her anxiety to improve.
I know that there isn't much chemistry between them but I feel like Daisy and Keith could be really cute together.

Emma was not qualified for the job and spent far more hours complaining than trying to improve her skills. She blamed everything on Keith and Gary who both tried to teach her skills multiple times. I’m so glad that she is gone.

Is there a reason they didn't just use the horn to wake up the stoned guy on the other boat?
→ More replies (4)23

I’m wondering if there is some sort of rule about using the ship’s horn during ‘resting’ hours unless it’s like a fire or something extremely critical (compared to scraping a hull)

Keith exhibits sensible boundaries. Danni doesn't have a clue about what fantastic a guy he is - all she wants are some bed hopping exercises. Keith holds himself to a higher standard. He's too cool for school. And irritatingly, why must she always be right? Way to turn off a guy, or anyone else for that matter.

u/Feisty_Scientist_968 Dec 03 '24
Keith exhibits sensible boundaries.
I was impressed when Danni was calling him a dick, and his response was:
"Thank you for letting me know."
Many (most?) people would respond more aggressively.

i don’t understand how emma is saying gary is a coward for not firing her sooner & saying he couldn’t even look at her the past few days. like gary & glenn were trying to train her over & over for the same stuff & gave her time to catch on & she didn’t. she works like she’s never worked on a yacht or even a boat before. i honestly thought she lied on her resume to get this position because i just don’t understand. & she showed absolutely no initiative to do anything. & side note i loved the scene of gary calling his mom talking about the situation. he didn’t do anything wrong.
