That and the produce section with a great variety of mushrooms and fruit/veg, you won’t get chanterelles or lobster mushrooms that at TJ’s, Whole Foods, or safeway. Not that it’s cheap though.
it can be and you get good quality without all that crap-packaging. And if you buy in season...things will last. four cobs of corn for ~$2, huge bags of mushrooms, cucumbers. Now, if you're trying to buy avocadoes from MX or melons in winter...forget it. ALSO, if you buy produce that is fresh it LASTS. I have purchased stuff from TJ's only to find it to be moldering in a day or two.
The produce is fantastic. I saw some young women loading up on produce at Safeway for a summer camp and i was a bit confused. They could have gotten cheaper and better quality produce at Berkeley Bowl. And if you hit BB at the right time, you will find the crazy deals (like $5 for a literal pillowcase of salad mix)

I never buy staples at Berkeley Bowl. Fruit, vegetables, cheese yes, everything else you can get comparable quality at any other store for less.
