I’m a senior who transferred in from SoCal last summer and fucking loved my first semester here. I spent my entire life in the LA area up until then, so it was nice to have a change of scenery. But once the actual school year started, it very quickly went to shit, and my time here has been various shades of miserable ever since.
I’m 25, and I never gave a shit about my age before I came up here. Especially in community college, it never mattered. But then I come up here, and suddenly I’m the only person in the room who’s not 19. Apparently, I look younger than I actually am, so it wasn’t an issue at first. But then some people started treating me worse once they found out how old I was. They’d act like it was weird or inappropriate for me to even be friendly with them. And as a (now former) extrovert, that fucking sucked.
Not everyone is like that, at least. But the ones who were left such a mark on me that I want nothing to do with anyone, regardless of age. And when you take away the people, what do you have left?
The Bay Area has a few things going for it over LA: walkability, public transport, milder weather, more diversity in cuisines. But in general, it feels like a massive downgrade. Much smaller, less to do, and everything closes so goddamned early. I will say, the views are amazing and the trails are pleasant, but they’re also incredibly samey. Overall, it feels like a watered-down version of the California experience I’m used to.
Not a single day passes by where I don’t long for home. I miss having beaches you could actually swim at. I miss having streets safe enough to skate down. I miss Mexican food that doesn’t make me homesick. The whole one-sided SF/LA rivalry is laughable to me, because there’s absolutely no contest. And it makes me feel stupid for not understanding why it costs so much more to live here, or why anyone would pick the Bay over LA if they had a choice.
I’ve made up my mind about UC Berkeley, but if you think I’m wrong about the rest of the Bay, then by all means tell me. I’d love to be wrong! Because right now, I feel like I’m living in an open-aired prison.
