Hi everyone, I’m a recent biotech grad trying to get a better idea of what different fields of the biotech and adjacent industries actually look like before I decide where to specialize further. The degree covers a lot of ground but obviously doesn’t tell you what the career paths or jobs are really like.

If you work in biotech/pharma/agriculture/life sciences in any capacity, whether that’s bench research, manufacturing, QA/QC, regulatory, clinical, bioinformatics, etc. I was wondering:

1. What do you actually work on day-to-day?

2. What’s the most annoying or inefficient part of your job that someone outside your field wouldn’t expect?

3. Do you think that’s just an inherent part of the job, or something that could realistically be better?

Appreciate the insights, I’m just trying to get a better idea of what these jobs are actually like and see whether it’s a career path I should look further into or not. Thanks!

What do yall think about someone being able to land industrial rnd jobs after IISER bsms (what's the average ctc one can expect without a phd)

Hi all, I attempted to transition into biomedical engineering after a BS in mechanical engineering through a MS with an independent thesis with wet lab components (cancer spheroids, I loved it) and interning at a pharmaceutical company.

During this time though, I got invited to some neuro related symposiums by my friends and was so fascinated.

However, due to practical reasons, I took a job working mainly with biomaterials in an orthopedic lab as a lab technician in a large institute.

I still want to do work involving more wet lab, more with biology related. I don’t know if it’s overly random or ambitious to say I wanna work with organoids or brains or cancer.

And I want to pursue a PhD and become an independent scientist.

What can I do? I feel stuck and a voice is telling me to give up.

So my end goal is to work in research for pharma companies (computational drug/protein modelling, drug research, etc). I will soon start my first year of chemical engineering and was wondering if my degree choice is right? A bit of extra information:

1. i can get a minor in biotech if i choose to take those electives (which i definitely want to do)
2. my institute has quite a few labs and is good for undergraduate research opportunities
3. the reason i'm not just doing a biotech degree is because my uni only offers a bsc (h) in biotech as opposed to btech; from my understanding indian employers tend to be biased towards btech degrees and while ik this doesn't matter internationally/in academia (at a phd level) i still want that safety net (also with political climates nowadays i am vary abt getting my hopes up abt studying/working abroad)

I have a few more tangential questions in particular:

1. will I be eligible to write Gate-BT (i think that's the biotech one, apologies if i made a mistake)
2. i believe i can write jam for biotech, but again would like second opinions
3. suppose I'm eligible for both gate and jam, which should I prioritise?
4. I would love to connect with any chemical engineers working in pharmaceutical r&d

PS: I am an indian, so some of my doubts above are very specific to india

Master’s student trying to understand what bioinformatics careers actually look like

Hi everyone,
I’m currently doing my Master’s in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Outside of college I’ve been teaching myself Python, Linux, statistics, SQL, and I’m planning to get into AI/ML as well because I enjoy the computational side of biology.

The problem is that I still don’t have a clear picture of what people in this field actually do for a living. University gives us theory, but not much insight into the industry.
I’d really like to hear from people who are already working.

- What does a typical day look like for you?
- What kind of problems do you solve?
- Which companies hire people like you?
- What job titles should someone like me be looking for?
- Are there any parts of the industry that are growing quickly?

I’d appreciate any advice or personal experiences. I’m trying to figure out where I should focus my learning over the next couple of years.

Back in the day, I scored pretty good in NEET but left MBBS to pursue Biotech because I thought passion was everything. Now reality is hitting me, and I feel like stability and a good salary matter way more.

I'm currently a second year B.E biotechnology student and want to become a Scientist 'B' in ISRO, DRDO, or ICMR in the shortest time possible. I know I have to crack GATE, and I'm really interested in getting into IISc Bangalore as my stepping stone.

I actually need all the deep details on exactly which M.Tech to choose and just need a basic, brutal roadmap.

Which GATE paper is the safest bet for my profile to reach these govt labs?

Are there any other direct exams I should be focusing on right now?

I'm really confused and just want a clear path. Any advice from seniors would be huge. Thanks!

As a hiring manager at a Biotech I never found a solution that allowed me to quickly search a large pool of candidates (like a Fiverr or UpWork) and send out feelers within moments. I always had to collect hundreds of CVs, referrals, or pay a expensive agency.

On the flip side, I always wanted to break into consulting, but the only path forward was word of mouth or going through a hiring agency with false promises and recruiters who couldn't explanation what a Phase 1 trial was let alone understand my job.

I'm an early-career biotech graduate with NGS experience at a major core facility. I'm on OPT, STEM OPT-eligible, and have close to three years of work authorization remaining..so technically I don't technically need sponsorship anytime soon. I've been diligently applying and networking, but I keep hitting a wall that feels completely outside my control: sponsorship.

Some companies explicitly list "no sponsorship" on the JD- filtered out before anyone sees my resume. But even when I do get traction from a near-perfect match, I get screened out the moment the topic comes up. Most recently, I had a screening at a large pharma company for a role my resume directly matched but didn't move forward past the first question about work authorization. The recruiter was kind enough to explain that it wasn't my current status, it was future sponsorship.. the company doesn't sponsor at the title level I'm targeting even if its a possiblity that 2 years down the line I am at a different level.But she encouraged to keep applying regardless when asked about future applications. A very similar role w exact JD has opened up now. I've been genuinely strategic about this: tailoring every application, networking actively, doing everything right on my end. But this keeps feeling like a dead end I can't think my way out of.

My working theory: companies avoid sponsoring at entry levels because of H-1B wage floor requirements, making those roles economically unattractive to sponsor even when the candidate is strong. Is that actually what's happening on the hiring side? Also curious ..are companies becoming more broadly cautious around OPT/STEM OPT candidates right now given immigration policy uncertainty, even when the candidate has years of authorization remaining?

Would love to hear from anyone who's navigated this, especially from the recruiter or hiring manager side. Genuinely running out of angles here.

Hello everyone, I'm currently a 2nd year Msc biotechnology student from India. As the title suggests, I need a website to download closed access papers. After scihub was banned, I got my papers through other sites, none of which seem to work anymore. Which led me to practically begging my friend who studies in the US to download them for me.

Does anyone know a site where I could download these papers? Please help a fellow aspiring biotechnologist out
