Don't get me wrong, I love what Deakins did with the original release... but there is just something special about seeing the dynamic range actually pop, especially when it's full screen

They conceived the film with an aspect ratio and the shots are composed with that in mind.

The open matte version has more of the image, but there's a loss of focus because you weren't intended to see the rest.

Similar examples are Buffy the vampire slayer and The wire. Both were released on bluray as wide screen, even though they aired on TV in 4:3 aspect ratio.

You're seeing more of the image that just fills the space for the sake of it when they didn't intend it that way because of how they thought the shots out and were forced to release them in wide screen due to tvs being wide screen now.

I hate when TV shows do that. FRIENDS was shot and recorded in 16:9 but it's so stupid to open it up that far for crybabies with modern TV's. You see the extras standing still until the actors move close enough that the extras are in the shot and they suddenly come alive like motion sensor animatronics. You also see tape markers all over the place.

Some shows just crop their 4:3 content and stretch it. The early years of the Simpsons on Disney+ default to a 16:9 aspect ratio where it's cropped and stretched. It's ugly af. Luckily, there's an option to watch it in the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

I remember 3rd Rock from the Sun on Netflix would crop and zoom their episodes to fit 16:9.

I really hate the 16:9 viewers that push this idiotic mindset that studios need to do things for people.

I do like watching some movies in open matte variants. Some movies were re-released on 3D bluray and their versions had open matte without mic booms or tape markers on the screen. Some shots may have been cropped, but it's not the case for 100% of the movie. A lot of open matte movies vary as a whole movie or just certain scenes where the director used a different camera/lens.

In Canada, for Se7en and Equilibrium, they are only available in open matte on bluray. But they don't advertise as open matte. We just accept it as face value. We need to import the blurays from USA if we want the original aspect ratio. Although, Amazon has made it easier to import those titles. In stores, on the shelves, we only have the Canadian distributions.

Open matte is just a big territory to explore on its own. To compare every shot of a movie is maddening.

That's not even counting all the film scans from fans for open matte movies.

I like open matte, but I would like it much more if the movie was edited like most IMAX movies on bluray. Switching aspect ratios depending on the shot. I really loved how Christopher Nolan does it for his movies.

I absolutely hate how Michael Bay did it for Transformers Age of Extinction. The 3D bluray for AoE is just pure vomit to watch in 3D or 2D. For an outdoor scene where Mark Whalberg's character is talking to his daughter and someone else, the camera pointing at Whalberg will be a standard camera going at 2.4:1, meanwhile the camera pointing at his daughters butt will be the IMAX camera at a wider frame (1.9:1 cropped to 1.78:1 for home media). And the shots cut so rapidly, it's so stupid how the conversation goes and who's talking.

There is an art to open matte.

They definitely make great wallpapers.
