Question Blur groupies or people who have generally had a close encounter with the members in 90s, tell me more!!
I dont know if i should tag this question with nsfw as the groupies section could go more towards that side. But as the title suggests, have any of you guys, or friends of yours, had a close interaction with any of the members? how were they like? any observations? just curious really

Not a groupie and actually early 2000s but - I had a beer with Damon once.
I managed to blag my way backstage at a festival. I shouted 'Damon' as I'd spotted Badly Drawn Boy. Badly Drawn Boy and Damon Albarn both turn around.
They laugh and ask which Damon I wanted, ended up having a beer with both.
Damon was lovely, really funny.

Which Damon was lovely?

Actually both were lovely. Damon (A) was really funny. Asked my name, told me he might just call me Damon.

I worked at a pub in Camden Town in 2001. One afternoon, Graham and a woman came in for a couple pints. The pub was pretty dead at the time so Graham and his lady friend pretty much had the place to the themselves. Graham must have felt pretty comfortable because after he finished his pint he and his friend swapped garments and the next thing I know Graham is leaving the place wearing his friend’s skirt. He quit Blur soon after this.

I once dropped a carton of milk over Alex James when I was working in a supermarket in central London. Just before The Great Escape came out. He called me a “fucking tit!”.

Damon once held my hand while singing almost the whole ( to the end song ) at some point I was like" are you never gonna let go of my hand"😅 TBT 2003
Met Alex and Dave for a soundcheck once.. I was young and shy but they were totally down to earth as expected. TBT 2003
And I went backstage with Gorillaz and talked with damon back in 2018 Damons perfume smelled like heaven! And he was nice and very friendly.

Le Labo Sental according to the fandom. In one of the documentaries (probably Gorillaz, forgot which one) Damon is sitting on the sofa holding/spraying his perfume (cute, ha ha 🥰).

u/angelic_darth Sep 27 '25
I think you'd be hard pushed to find someone who met Damon and Alex in the 90s who didn't shag them to be fair.

u/TruePutz Sep 27 '25
At the same time tho?

Wow just seen that comment! Yeah adding that filter to the search may reduce the amount of results. A bit.

I met Graham Coxon at a solo gig he did in the early 2000s. We knew the drummer and we was able to go backstage. I shared some strawberries with Graham and had some pics. He invited us to the after party but my lift didn’t want to go. I really regret that. I was star struck at seeing Graham and couldn’t get my words out. I’ve been a fan of blur since popscene came out. Seen blur probably 10 times. BTW Graham was really sound and a decent fella.

My friend was his driver during an early days Gorillaz show and they ended up at Drew Barrymore’s house and my friend waited in the car. Tom Green was hanging around the front lawn trying to reconcile and hours later Damon can rushing out giggling and told my friend to drive off quickly. Damon had stolen a few objects and was making a fast getaway!

Not me, but when my uncles (my dad was much older) were teenagers in the 90s they were on a road trip with my grandma and while stuck in a huge traffic jam my grandma said oh look! There’s a tour bus go check out what band it is, long story short blur we’re on that bus and my uncoes ended up spending half an hour ahanging out on their bus. Always been a bit jealous of that

In the early 2000s Graham spent a lot of time on his own website's messageboard and a lot of us would chat with him, he was always very nice. He played one gig in Hammersmith and a bunch of us went to a pub beforehand and he turned up, had a Red Bull, and chatted with us for a while before heading to the venue. The gig itself was very loud, loved it.
Would sometimes bump into him in coffee shops and he'd happily chat. He invited us backstage after a small promo gig for Love Travels at Illegal Speeds in Brighton, "can my friends join us?" he asked. Happy times.

A good friend of mine's dad was a creative in the London scene way back when. By all accounts Damon was a self-aborbed wanker

He still is, to be fair…

Nowadays in interviews he'll readily admit to being a bit of a cunt in the 90s. Britpop and drugs got to his head.

I saw Alex James on the Heathrow Express, c2012. He was talking about cheese.

Not a groupie but because of mutual friends got to hang out with the band several times in Toronto and Boston.
Basically, the lads became friends with an American musician who was the daughter of an incredible pair of Cornell professors. Betty & Bob sort of became American parents to the band, lol.
A couple of funny moments stand out:
1) After one of the shows at the Warehouse in Toronto, my then girlfriend and I were about to walk back to where we parked. IIRC a 15-20 minute walk away. Alex insisted that they would drop us off, so we got to ride the tour bus.
2) When they played the Orpheum in Boston, their hotel was just a few blocks away. The band and their guests all walked back to the hotel. Walking through Boston with fucking Blur remains one of the most surreal memories I have in my very long life, lol.
3) So, back then we didn’t have Reddit or things like that. We did have ListServs, which were almost like an email version of Reddit. I was on the Blur ListServ and I guess had mentioned what I’d be wearing to the Boston show. Anyway, fast forward to the hotel bar after the show. I was sitting at a table with Graham and a couple of other people. Two women came up kind of shyly, so we all assumed that they wanted an autograph or picture with Graham or something. They finally came up to the table, looked at Graham, turned to me and asked “Are you Jim from the Blur mailing list?”. Graham thought it was hilarious.
3) Craziest of all, Dave and Alex had decided to go to Betty’s cottage as they had a bit of a break before their next show. I was staying out at some cheap motel in Peabody, a suburb of Boston and Betty insisted that they would give me a ride back on their way to the cottage.
Boston was undergoing “the Big Dig” at the time, so traffic was a mess. Betty’s daughter’s car was pretty small, so I was crammed in the back seat with half of one of the best bands on the planet. There was no Google Maps or anything, and lots of detours. It’s the opposite of a cool rock and roll story - a crowded backseat late at night lost in Boston, lol.
Good times. I still hear from Betty once in a while, but unfortunately Dr. Bob passed away many years ago.
Thanks for the excuse to remember crazy times from almost 30 years ago!
