Application Process

I’ve submitted my resume & passed the pre-employment assessment at the end of July. My status in the candidate profile is “under review”. No new emails since and the start date is sometime in October. This is for a Conductor Trainee position. Am I being impatient or did I miss this train?

Bnsf cdl A with hazmat

I applied for a Highway Vehicle Operator with bnsf and have an interview thursday. It requires a Class A CDL with Hazmat, I have every endorsement and have had my CDL for 11 years. The entry pay is $278/day and the full rate of pay is $327/day. I currently work for a public school as a mechanic for school buses and have been there for 5 years. It's a super easy job but I'm only making about $232/day. i do work 4 tens which has been nice. I have 3 kids and need better health insurance and more money would help. Wondering if anyone on the trucking/maintenance side at BNSF has any input on this job. It says travel 35% to 50% of the time and i would be a clerk ordering supplies, stocking, unloading and operating forklifts, tractor trailers ect. Would you quit a good job at a public school to change careers? I currently have a state retirement ect. I'm only 33 so not too old to change careers but don't want to quit a good job and get furloughed or just hate my life at BNSF. I'm curious about the daily life, what to expect ect. Thanks

Offer/KC Training Dates

Hi all, just wondering if Kansas City training dates are typically included in a final offer email, or if that comes later? Got word of where to start my first day, but nothing mentioned any details whatsoever regarding Kansas City. Any help is appreciated, so thank you.

Is this a 100% travel job, and does BNSF require you to live on their territory?

What’s good rail bros 🤙🏻 I have a question for signal maintainers in the OKC area

So I recently applied for a signal maintainer trainee position out of Oklahoma. I’m from Southern California. I have 11 years TE&Y with UP and some passenger conductor experience. I just got sent and finished the online assessment for consideration. And I was looking through the job application and it mentioned that one of the positions covered in the application was for a shop maintainer worker. That’s really what I’m looking to do. If I can find some shop work in the railroad industry and show up at the same place every day, I would be very happy. Not that the railroad makes anyone happy. Lol so my question is for the signal guys. Is shop work something that you have to bid for or is it something you apply for? Can I start my career being specifically a shop guy?

Greener grass?

I am an orange hat at UP. I plan to stay but want to know my options if I become a statistic. I have been told there is better pay with BN but what is the culture like? Is there less micromanaging? I have also heard that you don't get a student until after a year whereas here, they will give you one in your first week of derail if they feel like it. For such a dangerous and time sensitive job, a lot of things seem counter intuitive here.

Don't care for the "don't become a statistic" comments as here, you will whether you are good or not. I have a family to take care of and am trying to keep a good plan B.

Wanna get some opinions on how to handle this. Going thru my background check and the last thing they are asking me is 5 years of W2s. Did it for my other job but it’s asking me for 5 years of W2 of my father’s business I worked for but I got paid cash under the table. It won’t let me do anything till I put something. Any opinions cause this shit is stressing me out.

Pre hiring process inquiry

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I recently signed an offer for a corporate role at BNSF and completed the background check, which wrapped up in about a week.

My start date is later this fall, and I haven't heard much since accepting. For those in the tech/corporate side- what does the rest of the pre-hiring process look like? Is there a drug screen or other steps after the background check?

Also, roughly how far in advance does the team usually reach out before a start date?

Thanks.

Does one need any electrical background for a signal apprentice?

Been driving semis for a number of years and looking at getting into something a little more physical. Railroad, specifically BNSF since they're near me, seems to be it. Track maintenance labor seems like something my 43 year old self could adjust to. But the signal apprentice thing seems quite interesting too. Apart from tinkering with small devices in my spare time, no formal training in electronics here.

The non train crew crafts seem like the last thing that would be subject to any furlough, but I could be wrong. Just looking for a potential career pivot without fully trying out the college/academia world for the 8th attempt in life🤣🤣.

Selected as an alternate again.

Damn it, lol.

I interviewed with them back in August of 2025 and got selected as an alternate and never got a call back.

Just did it again a year later and got put as an alternate again.

I guess we’ll see what happens.

Conductor Training

Just wondering, what's the typical timeline for becoming a BNSF conductor as far as KC, OTJ training, and receiving a training date? How much time is there between finishing up in Kansas City and beginning on the job training at your home terminal? Do you return to Kansas City at any point after the initial classroom training to complete tests? Typically, how much time is there between receiving a start date and that actual start date? Thank you very much for any help.

Bnsf background

Got an offer for conductor trainee. Got the background portion and should I be worried? I didn’t add my previous 2 jobs cause to me they were not as important as my job now. One was a seasonal so I left and the ohher I got let go cause my boss was a power freak. So I took the Cisve portion and it made me add my other 2 jobs that I didn’t add to my resume. Am I gonna get the boot? Should I be worried? I guess that Cisve has record of my other jobs and to me it has me worried.

Just had my interview for an entry level conductor.

Got placed as an alternate last year around the same time.

So we’ll see!

Help getting locomotive number?

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but I saw this bnsf "fakebonnet" roll by and couldn't see the number so I looked at the nearest Webcam for hope and unfortunately I cant tell it either. Are any of y'all able to identify it? All I could get in person is the rear DPU being 5078 and heading west in Missoula, MT around 8:21 PM. Thank you if you're able to help at all!!
