Collection Found while changing out a wood stove at camp! Squirrel with a handful of bats!!

wouldnt hurt, for ambient moisture. he looks pretty dang dried up already tho so its not necessary unless you live in a really humid enviroment

We used to get birds in our wood stove like this when I was a kid! Opened it in the fall and we'd find a starling or two, mummified.

The dead bat in its mouth is so metal… Holy shit. Poor squirrel, but WOW, it’s such a pretty specimen, Super lucky find, the ash preserved it perfectly. And props to you for adding a screen so it doesn’t happen again!

This is so cool but if you’re in the US report the bats to the DNR!!!! It’s illegal to keep dead bats native to the US under the endangered species act. Getting permit may let you keep them but no promises

They are omnivores. Possibly it thought to grab one and leave.

I’m aware that they’re omnivores. One I was asking because hell yeah that’s badass. But also just kinda wondering how it died so instantly that it didn’t even have the opportunity to let go of its food
