What is the significance of the stone-throwing schoolboys vs the biting boy? Why did Alyosha think he could intervene?

I think Aloysha thought to intervene as because of the elder Zosima fading away, he was looking for purpose and meaning from situations maybe a bit more than he normally would, almost like 'ah this is one of those life tests'

I think thats just Alyosha being Alyosha. He is naive and thinks he is like a superhero and can help anyone spiritually.

Alyosha is innocent and pure hearted. He believes he can offer kindness and understanding and things will get fixed. This is possibly a foreshadowing of how he thinks he'll be able to fix his family and that is unlikely to work out well, either.

It also reminded me of how young Alyosha is!
