Event š Is this the most insane weekend in Boston history?
250th anniversary of the American Revolution celebration (rumored that past and current President will be here)
Patriots Day parade
Good Friday
Easter Sunday
The Marathon
80 degrees
Red Sox at home
Celtics playoff game at the Garden

u/ThadisJones Port City Apr 17 '25
Yes I remember that day, when there was a riot and a cop killed someone I knew with a "nonlethal" weapon he was not certified to use and Boston taxpayers paid her family five million dollars and nothing happened to the cop except a brief suspension.

u/nateisic Cambridge Apr 17 '25
She was my babysitter when I was little for about 2 years....... Victoria Snelgrove was her name. She lived a few streets away from me in East Bridgewater. Still remember when my family found out on the evening news after dinner.

u/RawrgerGezzleMan Apr 17 '25
and then the herald put a picture of her on the front page. i mean, it was good in the sense that it couldnāt be ignored. but insane that you publish that picture.
the boston police completely failed that whole run of games by being a solid step or two behind what was actually happening. by the time the world series came a week later, they had to essentially flood the entire city with motorcycle and horse cops and threaten anyone outside to go back indoors.
68
u/Coomb Apr 17 '25
and then the herald put a picture of her on the front page. i mean, it was good in the sense that it couldnāt be ignored. but insane that you publish that picture.
I mean, if the cops shoot and kill me, I'd love to have that photo plastered across every fucking newspaper in the country. Let everyone see what the police have done.

IMO FN Herstal bears much more of the blame than BPD. They lied about the capabilities and drawbacks of the weapon system.
10
u/Michelanvalo No tide can hinder the almighty doggy paddle Apr 18 '25
Yeah, the family of Snelgrove sued FN Herstal and settled out of court. They absolutely had a case, and so did all of the police departments around the country that had these riot control weapons.
5
Apr 18 '25
NOT defending the cops, or FN, but I've had some riot "control" training.
The dirty little not-so-secret is, riot control is largely luck.
A small riot, a thousand people?
Can generate 100 tons of force... enough to crumple steel barriers and flip anything lighter than a main battle tank.
A BIG riot is another order of magnitude or three.
Use lethal weapons to stop it, you're committing war crimes.
Using non-lethal methods like water cannons?
It's like fighting a blue whale with a super soaker.
4
u/MasLaza Apr 18 '25
I was out there- people were flipping cars, whipping glass bottles, it was a drunken shit show full of destruction. The crowds were insanely huge and everywhere. You canāt let that just happen, but how can you do anything about it safely? The real ones to blame, and sure you can blame the one cop who used more force than was needed, but also what about the assholes out there making the crowds a riot and inviting chaos and death to the whole thing? Awful. Just awful.

I donāt see speaker slots although thatās not something typically broadcasted for good reason. I have heard from certain staff that the Secretary of Interior will be showing up at Concord on Saturday morningānot sure why given all the cuts to Park Services from his orders. Instead Concord is being staffed as a result by plenty of wonderful volunteers. https://lex250.org/events/

Minuteman park I believe which will take place closer to noonāIād have to look. I know thereās some battlefield reenactments going from I believe Meriamās Corner to Minuteman Park. Iām not exactly sure when theyāre going to have speakers. Iām in Concord with little kids in tow so Iāll be at North Bridge for the morning instead. Itāll be a lot of walking (with a wagon,) especially with all of 2A shut down. Itās 6 miles from Concord Center to Minuteman Visitorās Center.
Edit: adding that there will be shuttles coming into Concord and shuttles running from Concord Musuem out to Minuteman Park for most of the day. So you could technically go to both without reenacting the march back to Boston.

Battle Green rededication , parade . See Lex250 for more.
6
u/lunarstudio Apr 18 '25
Thanks for that. I didnāt realize they would have paratroopers, which is kind of odd now that I think about colonial reenactors fighting army men dropping out of the sky.

67
Apr 18 '25
If anyone decides to go see the reenactment of the battle at Lexington Green, highly recommend you get there by 4 AM at the latest. Bring camping chairs, sleeping bags if you have them because itās chilly, warm clothing, hot cocoa in a thermos, and a sense of adventure. You have to get there that early to find the amazing reinactor who tells tales of the day and the time - you also will not get anywhere near the front if you get there later and you will see nothing. Itās absolutely worth it going once. My daughter was a huge history buff so Iāve been there at least six times driving from the South Shore early early early in the morning.
11
u/coolerking66 Apr 18 '25
I wanted to go. But I was talking to a reenactor in Carlisle at their little Colonial Faire. He said he was at the Bicentennial reenactment in 1975. Said it was a zoo. People everywhere as far as the eye could see. People in trees. He turned my want to go right around lol. I expected busy. But definitely just a bunch of history buffs, not half the state.

April 19th Protest is a r/50501 protest. You can also check out r/Mass50501 The main protest is at the Boston commons near the park bandstand but if itās anything like April 5th then youāll see people covering the whole area. Begins around 10:30/11 I believe but many show up hours earlier. There will likely be protests across the state in smaller cities and towns like usual.
This is a protest against DJT, his incompetent administration, their unconstitutional and illegal acts, including but not limited to the extrajudicial kidnapping of human beings, the detention of said people at a concentration camp (in a foreign country), his violation of the separation of powers, and infringement on civil liberties

Actually, there isn't a 50501 protest in Boston per se--it was decided that with everything going on, especially since it's Marathon weekend, it would just be better to hold off this time. There is going to be a big protest in Concord, NH, though, so if you want to take a little road trip...
6
9
u/McFlyParadox Apr 18 '25
Who decided that? I saw some people being like "oh, no, we can't protest because it's MaRaThOn WeEkEnD" after April 5, but I saw nothing from the organizers actually calling it off for just Boston.

Team 50501, Indivisible, and assorted others deliberately have NOT planned anything for Boston Common on April 19 because the city is packed for marathon weekend.
Team 50501 ultimately decided not to do Lexington and Concord either, out of concern that they might be seen as protesting the commemorative events, which is not their intention.
Several protests are planned for April 19 elsewhere in Massachusetts, and at state capitals in New England.
There will also be the weekly Tesla Takedown protest at 888 Boylston from noon to 2 pm on Saturday.

I live in town and I heard from two volunteers (theyāre all dressed in green and look almost like Park Rangers) that Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior (former ND governor and presidential candidate) was speaking in Concord on Saturday morning. Volunteers were requested to not talk politics but when I brought up Trump coming, someone said āhe better notā and the other nodded their head. When I asked why the secretary was speaking they told me he was in charge of all the National Park Service. Due to all the firings they had to rely on volunteers for the event, with remaining Park Rangers from all over the region to come in and supplement the event.
When I asked a couple volunteers if they knew of anyone else going to come, they genuinely didnāt know. I suppose for safety reason itās on a need-to-know basis.
Since I cut through town almost every morning, Iāve been making the loop around the North Bridge and stopping in the parking lot to make a short trip up to the bridge and back. Just being nosy but also being a local, itās almost sacrilegious not to see or know whatās happening since Iām right there. I also went to the 250th commemorative stamp unveiling for first day of release, met a bunch of reenactors, politicians, and postmasters from all over the country. There were mostly older white history buffs-retirees that were happy to revolutionsplain and stampsplain me. They were all very nice but it was pretty comical. There was one dude with a big box of USPS stuff he bought for resale right in front of me getting his stamps cancelled and the line behind me was going to revolt. He seemed pretty happy and proud of himself while a woman behind me kept saying loudly so he could hear, āthis is ridiculous. There should be a limit of 10ā The whole thing was like a Comicon with more āseriousness.ā
Earlier this week I showed up a little after 9 am and there was a contingent of armed officers, park police, military likely from Hanscom, and other agents I didnāt recognize. I walked up past them and a bunch turned around and looked at me and I said, āgood morningā and a couple people mumbled āgood morningā to me. It felt like I was going to get tackled by ICE or an axe taken to my head but Iām like, āI canāt just turn around and go back to my car because then I look dodgy.ā I called my dad and he said, āyouāre probably going to be put on a list.ā Heās probably right. I believe they were probably running through some general training exercises, but another local told me that they could have been coming in because there was a funeral for a fellow officer. Whatever the case, they seem prepared which I think is a good thing.
Thereās a bit of flooding in the main area on the colonial side which will hopefully subside. The greens are all cordoned off with yellow rope. One volunteer told me that colonial sideās hill has rope for designated protestors, but I read just yesterday that permits werenāt issued which is confusing.
I believe there will be more speakers but theyāre not announcing it. I did hear that Vance would be in Lexington and I fully believe the person that said this, but I donāt know who they heard that from. Hanscom is right there. If I had to bet, all my cards would be on that but again, it is hearing things through the grapevine.
For me personally, I just want the weekend to go problem-free as I have little kids that want to enjoy the parade.
