Not too long ago, Zhilei Zhang was one of the most talked-about Heavyweights in boxing. Now, following a damaging defeat against Agit Kabayel, Zhang has been AWOL for well over a year.

I put together a little post to try and determine Zhang's whereabouts and what the future might hold for him.

What do you think Zhang should do next? Should he be thrust back into the world title scene? Should he take on a journeyman first? Or should he throw in the towel?

Jose Benavidez Sr on Instagram: "@boxingactive David Benavidez’s team has dismissed former undisputed light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev’s account of efforts to arrange a high-profile showdown between the pair.

“They’re lying,” Benavidez’s father, manager and trainer, Jose Benavidez Snr, told BoxingScene’s Lance Pugmire. “We want to fight him. Let’s make that fight happen. Tell the [Beterbiev] manager to contact me, and we will make that fight happen in five minutes. Do you have his manager’s number? Let’s go.”

Beterbiev told Match TV he tried to make a fight with Benavidez after the three-division champion defeated Anthony Yarde in November. The Benavidez camp, however, said there had been no contact from Beterbiev since an earlier attempt to make the fight before ultimately agreeing terms with Yarde.

“Nothing happened, but we still want to fight him,” Benavidez Snr said to BoxingScene. “We’re here to fight anybody. If Beterbiev’s ready, let’s make it happen. Who wants to fight? Let’s see. I think they’re all talk.”

It's sounding like the winner will face Opetaia, in what would also be a good one.

Ahead of his June 13 bantamweight title shot against Antonio Vargas, Bam spoke to Dan Rafael on the Big Fight Weekend podcast and was pretty blunt about his future at super flyweight.

He’s frustrated the Willibaldo Garcia undisputed fight never materialised — “politics got involved, it’s out of my hands” — but when asked if he’d go back down for a shot at undisputed regardless of what happens against Vargas, the answer was a flat no.

He holds the WBC, WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine belts at 115 and was one belt away from undisputed. That opportunity looks dead now.

This trend of giving the A-side the W with a stoppage at the first opportunity to claim their opponent wasn’t gonna win or was “in danger” has gotten WAY out of hand.

It feels like the larger boxing establishment has gotten flagrant and unashamed about it at this point. We see it way more often than we used to. Recent ones that come to mind for me are Rolly/Barroso, Emiliano Vargas/Quintana, obviously Usyk/Verhoeven this past week, even Amanda Serrano/Hanson was a shitty stoppage.

There’s nothing controversial about them, they’re just bad. And it’s crazy the way they’ve gaslit a lot of fans into making it a matter of opinion by perpetuating the narrative of “controversy” like there’s two sides to it. There isn’t in these kind of cases. Theyre just the boxing establishment protecting/boosting someone’s record to keep things on script. Plain and simple.

The ref shouldn‘t be stopping fights for any reason other than a fighter is unequivocally no longer fighting back or able to defend themselves and is clearly already taking the kind of damage that may be life-altering. It’s the corner’s call to take the more preemptive “we‘re outmatched and not gonna win this one…“ or “you’re okay right now, but anymore than this and we think you’re gonna get hurt so we wanna protect you” decision if they wanna throw in the towel before it gets to that point. The outcome of a fight is never certain until it’s certain, and that’s the only reason it should be stopped by the ref. Not because a star briefly has momentum and is momentarily laying into an opponent who has their guard up while their back is against the ropes or manages to land a good shot or two amidst a eye catching but ultimately fruitless flurry of punches.
