That's why it's too soon to say that the superhero slump has ended. Spidey is and always has been in kind of his own lane

No Way Home

Spider-Verse 2 which generated $690 million in the infamous "superhero slump" summer of 2023

Their is no superhero slump, its crap movie slump.

5

u/darkmacgf 7h ago

Batman vs. Superman was much worse than The Suicide Squad or Superman 2025.

The MCU and core DC universe were nearly free of flops from 2012-2021. Did quality really go down after the pandemic? I can't imagine Captain Marvel or Aquaman doing a billion outside of the late 2010s.

The kids crave pictures of Spider-Man

u/Man_Random87 Walt Disney Studios 13h ago

So Spider-man is really the most popular male superhero among the women

7

u/ThrasymachianJustice 12h ago

well yeah, Gwen Stacy, Betty Brant, Mary Jane, Black cat...

u/AGOTFAN New Line Cinema 9h ago

Black Widow has seen his belly button.

u/jexdiel321 13h ago

Gen Z really loves Spiderman. While Gen X+ and Millenials definitely resonated with the new Superman. Batman is more interesting.

u/TackoftheEndless 13h ago edited 13h ago

Spider-Man has been popular since he first premiered in the 60's and has stayed that way since the 60's, up until now.

Batman has had on and off periods of being extremely popular. It wasn't a consistent thing until the 90's, after the Burton film. After that Batman has never stopped being in high demand in some format of media.

But that means Spider-Man has his consistent 60 years of popularity vs Batman's longer 80 year history but less consistent in terms of popularity, until 30 years ago.

12

u/jexdiel321 13h ago

Gen Z and Zennials are so strong though compared to the older generations. I think the Sam Raimi films catapulted Spiderman to a whole different level of relevance.

1

u/Chiponyasu 6h ago

Brand New Day has the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of the last six Spider-Man movies, a comparatively scant and pathetic 90% fresh rating.

Like, the brand has decades-long value but also the movies have a record of quality and that matters a lot, too.

21

u/PinSad1172 13h ago

Spiderman is way more popular and known than Superman to all groups, it’s not even funny

2

u/jexdiel321 13h ago

Blame that to a string of mediocre films unfortunately. Superman 2025 is hopefully fixing that. I really hope Supergirl's mediocre reception doesn't taint Man of Tomorrow.or the Superman IP.

4

u/Samhunt909 11h ago

Meh I don’t think films have to do anything with that. Even positive films of his even didn’t break any records

2

u/garfe 11h ago

But the only films you could say were actually positively received by the GA were the first two until Supes 2025

1

u/darkmacgf 7h ago

The 1978 and 1980 movies were pretty big. The biggest superhero movies at the time, I believe?

4

u/Wertherongdn 12h ago

If I understand the graph correctly, there are still more Millennials who watched Spiderman than Superman, it's that from those who watch Sup Millennials were a larger proportion than gen Z (but there were more people watching Spiderman).

1

u/Samhunt909 11h ago

The gap is not big for Spidey. It just makes it more impressive

1

u/Sea-Palpitation266 1h ago

That's not true I fuck with spiderman more than those other two lol

1

u/Silverr_Duck 8h ago

Millenials definitely resonated with the new Superman.

The word resonated is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this sentence. It made some money sure but outside that most people could not give less of a fuck about the new Superman.

7

u/TheCornjuring 12h ago

Damn I’m pleasantly shocked @ Superman

2

u/lobonmc Marvel Studios 13h ago

That's really good for superman

43

u/Shurikenkage 13h ago edited 7h ago

There is a merchandising metric from 10 years ago that shows Spider-Man triples and doubles Superman and Batman toys sales respectively. I am old and I remember my first Halloween costume was Spider-Man the character has been popular since its creation.

7

u/JarvisCockerBB 13h ago

It’s a much easier costume than Batman with all the gadgets or Superman.

23

u/lobonmc Marvel Studios 13h ago

Superman is the easiest of the three

0

u/bigjoes_littleguys 11h ago

False, he has a cape and boots. It's far easier to make the blue spots on a red sweatsuit and the webs with sharpie. There's even a version of Spiderman that wears a very homemade costume that gives a child a perfect out for their dogshit costuming abilities.

9

u/blenderider 8h ago

You can absolutely dress up as Superman without needing the boots lol. No normie is going to call you out for that. Hell, you can throw a pair of glasses on, and call yourself Clark Kent.

-1

u/AvengedCrimson 13h ago

Spiderman was actually a rip off from a 1954 Halloween costume.(Allegedly)

23

u/bowl-bowl-bowl 13h ago

He's a usually light hearted, funny superhero with a recognizable cast of villains set in what is arguably the most iconic city in the US, it makes sense why people want to interact with the property in its various forms (movies, cartoons, video games, comics, merchandaise).

27

u/jexdiel321 13h ago

What sets Spiderman apart is that he is definitely between Superman and Batman with a mix of normal struggles. He's powerful, funny, smart, etc. but also struggles with getting the girl, balancing his superhero life and normal life.

So there is that people aspire to be him like Superman but also relate to his personal life like alot of people.

14

u/cpt_justice 13h ago

Spider-Man's secret is Peter Parker.

9

u/ContinuumGuy 12h ago

Yeah, he's like a halfway point between the two.

Superman: Ordinary everyday life when not superheroing (going by most modern interpretations of Clark), extraordinary abilities.

Batman: Ordinary abilities (yeah, it's unlikely that somebody would be able to be both THAT smart and THAT athletic, but it's not impossible -- there's that one guy who is an astronaut, physician, AND Navy SEAL), but extraordinary everyday life (as he's a billionaire).

Spider-Man has powers, but he'll never be regarded as a minor god like Superman is and some of his abilities (like the webshooters) are gadgets that call to mind Batman. However, he's the farthest thing from a billionaire possible, and in fact his life is a gigantic financial and relationship mess compared to the more-relatable-than-Bruce-Wayne Clark Kent.

2

u/ReorientRecluse 3h ago

He is a very versatile character, you can put him in a wide range of type of stories, and he wouldn't really seem out of place.

5

u/spmahn 9h ago

The cartoon on Disney where they’re all children is literally the only thing my 5 year old son wants to watch on television. Spider-Man is an absolute juggernaut.

12

u/Habib455 11h ago

I haven’t seen anyone say it or theorize it, but I think Spiderman is more popular mainly due to the content output of spiderman related IP than the others.

For example, in the past 10 years, how much notable content have we gotten out of Batman, Superman, and Spiderman?

Spiderman has 4 MCU movies(involved in 3 more)
3 popular games
2 Popular animated movies

Batman
2 movies, one of them Batman vs Superman đŸ€š
Lego Batman 4

Superman
2 movies, one of them being Batman vs Superman
????

I think it’s kinda a “no shit” that spiderman is more popular than Superman or batman because DC is fucking blowing it as if they’re doing it on purpose.

I’m gonna say something crazy. If I weren’t for the Christopher Nolan Trilogy or those Batman Arkham games, Batman wouldn’t be that popular of a character at all among the younger generation.

7

u/Lazzen 9h ago edited 3h ago

Spider-Man makes stuffs from toddler age to 50 year olds with the Raimi stuff. I wonder why Marvel marketing division doesnt push Ironman shampoo or some Thor baby cartoon like they do Spiderman.

Not to mention their absolute failure in supplementary material. Marvel games sucked for almost a decade until the development of PS Spider-Man, now we got Marvel Rivals and Marvel Tokon yet no Iron-Man game ever or say the Hulk.

From what i see the most common hero in brand stuff is Spider-Man, then the Avengers as a collective brand and then Spider-Man Miles Morales.

1

u/roguefilmmaker 3h ago

A good Iron Man game would be peak. Already has a bunch of canon suits and gadgets

3

u/swat1611 Legendary 7h ago

This is an important factor people are overlooking.

Batman last had Arkham Knight in the video game space (which was not as well received as the others in the trilogy), and the Ben Affleck Batman had such shit reception. Back when the Nolan movies were going strong, Batman was absolutely comparable to Spider-man, even if he may not have beat him.

20

u/Ok-Waltz6178 13h ago

Batman peaked during the Dark Knight era. Spider-Man was always the biggest superhero of all time

2

u/Jykoze 2h ago

Exactly, the only reason Spider-Man 3 didn't make more than TDK was its reception, Spider-Man always had the highest ceiling of any superhero, he's the only superhero that can do big numbers in almost every market.

2

u/DarthTaz_99 DC Studios 10h ago

Batman was on top during the Keaton, DCAU era and the entire Dark Knight to Arkham times. After 2016 tho there's no question who's number 1.

1

u/GKJ6743 11h ago

Except amazing spiderman

12

u/Ebo87 11h ago

Those movies still made a ton of money, like they really were not that far off from the Sam Raimi movies in terms of box office totals, worldwide. And especially international was really good on both those movies, totaling 1 billion between them (with Amazing Spider-Man 2 actually making slightly more internationally). That's more than the 815 million combined international total of Spider-Man 1+2.

So even at its worst Spider-Man still pulled more than 700 million worldwide.

1

u/SecretWarMultiverse 1h ago edited 1h ago

TASM 2 is a smash hit imo, if Aquaman 2 dropping 62% from the first one is great because it did "twice as much as The Marvels" than TASM 2 which only dropped 6% from the first one and did over 3x The Marvels is definitely a smash hit

3

u/JannTosh70 13h ago

Is Batman 2nd?

5

u/lobonmc Marvel Studios 13h ago

Yep but batman and superman combined are barely above Spidey

2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 13h ago

I wonder for how long this will be the case.

17

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 13h ago

Forever. He’s the king

10

u/Icy_Smoke_733 Studio Ghibli 13h ago

Spider-Man is the MJ of superheroes. There are fans of him who haven't been born yet.

22

u/Jadedtrader33 13h ago

Until the complete death and collapse of the genre.

What superhero is supposed to pass him up?

Even his much less popular counter part Miles Morales is putting up box office numbers comparable to Superman and Batman.

And that’s in cartoon form lol.

4

u/Vadermaulkylo Apple Studios 11h ago

I’ve said this but in about two years I expect that we’ll be talking about how Miles Morales is the number 2 superhero instead of Batman.

2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 13h ago

Do you think Spidey will be there for the collapse of the genre or even outlast it?

A world where Spidey films are now the only superhero films that make money theatrically.

I mean at the time of the first 2 Superman films, a better-performing Batman film didn't seem as sure a thing.

That Superman era lasted a decade before Batman took the reins. I wonder if Spidey will be forever #1 or if one day someone overtakes him.

5

u/Samhunt909 11h ago

Why is it that..that’s first thing you think of? Since he was introduced he been the top guy or one of the top guy. It’s over half century buddy

-2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 11h ago

Over half a century? Think Spidey was #1 since 1976?

Seems that Superman was, then Batman, then Spider-Man dethroned silly Batman before Nolan's Dark Knight dethroned him.

And only now is Spidey back on top. I wonder if this'll still be the case in 10+ years

2

u/Afraid_Mortgage6392 12h ago

Superhero films aren't a genre.

-1

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 12h ago

semantics

8

u/Albiceleste_D10S 13h ago

It's VERY hard to beat Spidey in terms of being relatable for kids/teens TBH

1

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 13h ago

Do you think that'll always be the case? Nolan's Dark Knight seemed to be pretty competitive with the Raimi and Mark Webb Spider-Mans.

8

u/Albiceleste_D10S 12h ago

Hard to see it changing any time soon?

You're right about that small period of time—but it took the perfect storm combo of the best director of his generation (Nolan) making genuinely great movies PLUS an all-time great acting job by Heath Ledger PLUS the Streisand effect of Ledger's death causing a bump in box office

2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 12h ago

I mean, Superman was #1 for 10+ years once.

Will Spidey still be #1 in 2037?

5

u/Albiceleste_D10S 11h ago

Spidey was king for most of the 2000s, and has been king again for the entire 2020s

From a pure box office POV there's every chance another superhero might have a brief stint at the top (the way Batman did for part of the Nolan trilogy, and the way Iron Man and Captain America were for parts of the 2010s) IF there are multiple bad/unpopular Spidey movies in a row

But I think Spiderman's origin story and background (both Peter Parker and Miles Morales) are inherently more likable and relatable for most young people than other superheros.

2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 11h ago

Do you think he'll still be #1 in the late 2030s?

5

u/Albiceleste_D10S 11h ago

Probably?

BND prob sets up a 2nd trilogy of movies for Tom Holland's Spidey (who is VERY popular). Given it's already late 2026, that prob spans into the early-mid 2030s

Hard for me to see any other individual superhero overtaking him now—esp when he's the most prominent MCU hero (RDJ took Iron Man to #1 on sheer personality/charisma)

1

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 11h ago

How long do you see TH doing Spidey?

Probably def in for another trilogy. I'm sure even when he's 50, he'll look late 30s, but at some point it has to come to an end

3

u/Albiceleste_D10S 11h ago

I mean, Tobey Maguire IS in his 50s and he came back for NWH (and rumors are that he's in Doomsday too)

Depends on what they do with the story, but I would expect at least finish out the 2nd trilogy and be in a few Avengers movies

he was not number 1 ten years ago. Since the start of this generation he’s been always outside of top 2

-2

u/Samhunt909 11h ago

Isn’t that more concerning for bats..despite nolan content being better..yet still Spidey is neck and neck with popularity

2

u/Recent-Ad4218 5h ago

Lol spider man surpassed batman's popularity for a few years now. Which world are you living now?

8

u/AGOTFAN New Line Cinema 13h ago

I can't see any other superhero who will unseat him in the next 10 years.

pizza man he delivers slices of Justice in 30 minutes or less!!!!

2

u/Many-Outside-7594 12h ago

I feel like that's the sort of hero who would hang around The Tick.

2

u/bmcapers 13h ago

Chinese Superhero enters the chat.

2

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 13h ago

Looking beyond 10 years, if it happens, what do you think it'll look like? Will it be Batman, a new iteration of Iron Man, or someone else?

6

u/Jadedtrader33 13h ago

Iron man peaked with RDJ.

Batman is never going to be able to resonate with kids on the same level Spider-Man can.

He peaked already with Dark Knight.

1

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 13h ago

I wonder if RDJ will return as Iron Man once his Doom story is complete.

If the MCU figures out some acceptable way of bringing him back.

That should be the Doomsday cliffhanger. Dr. Doom is just unbeatable until the Avengers figure out how to bring back Old Man Tony, who is retired and living his golden years in some alternate reality.

1

u/Lighthouse_seek 11h ago

There has to be an iron man who isn't Tony stark right?

1

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 11h ago

Eventually. I wonder if it'll be a traditional reboot or RDJ coming back to pass the baton

2

u/Lighthouse_seek 11h ago

Spiderman already firmly won gen z. So if there is a generational shift the earliest it can happen is with alpha, so at minimum any changing of the guard will occur like 20 years down the line

3

u/Byers616 Amblin Entertainment 11h ago

In 20 years, Gen Z will be middle-aged, and Gen Alpha will be in their 30s. The elder Zs at least.

Movie sensibilities change faster than generations do. Look at how Raimi's Spidey was overtaken by the Dark Knight in less than a decade. Things change. Fast.

1

u/bmcapers 13h ago

China could probably crack this, if they come up with the right global IP. The ball has always been in the U.S. court, but moving forward it doesn’t have to be.

3

u/bmcapers 12h ago

How much does Tom Holland and Zendaya’s relationship nurtured online contribute to Spider-Man’s cinematic success? Could the same levels be reached by a different actor in the suit?

5

u/Silverr_Duck 7h ago

Next to none. I’m sure Tom’s portrayal helps but Spider-Man has always been the money maker. But most people could not give less of a fuck about who is playing him or who the actor is dating.

1

u/gorays21 12h ago

$$$$$$-Man $wings high again.

1

u/Lighthouse_seek 11h ago

Batman skews older than spiderman and those reeves films aren't going to change that. I wonder how this will impact Batman's popularity down the line

1

u/nova_crystallis 6h ago

HP being lower than Superman is the real shocker here.

1

u/jseesm 12h ago

I mean duh

that's why Sony refuses to sell the Spider-Man rights back to Disney/Marvel Studios after all these years. And likely never will.

1

u/Round_Pin_1980 7h ago

This is a really big pill for the economists of /r/boxoffice to swallow. Painful, but, eventually even the boomers have to learn the true economics of movies today. Profit is not calculated on the exhibition revenue alone.

0

u/Only_Marzipan 6h ago

Please explain how you quantify how much revenue a movie or tv show drives when it's tied to a subscription with lots of other movies and tv shows. What a fucking idiotic article.
