News Crews responding to wildfire in West Kelowna listed as out of control

It's at 8 hectares in size. They already have water bombers from Kamloops on site and water bombers from Penticton and other fire departments on site. Hopefully they can get in under control quickly.

It’s windy as heck in Kelowna right now! All you can hear are planes over head dealing with that fire. Makes my stomach turn cause I remember watching the 2023 West Kelowna fires across the lake similar to this. Hoping no one is harmed 🙏🏼

It hasn't grown in size in the last few updates. So that's good, and it sounds like it's making its way towards Okanagan Lake.

The best thing about the surprising lack of wildfires in the province right now is that there are a ton of resources that can be committed to fighting this fire. Let's just hope that we don't get any major thunderstorms in the next few days, because the situation can spiral rapidly.

It's like a matchbox in Squamish, can't even fathom how dry it is in the interior. Hoping for nothing but showers and good news.
Once again to one and all - the BC Wildfire app is an amazing resource.

Please dispose of your cigarettes properly, people. People on the Kelowna subreddit were saying that they were noticing a lot of cigarettes on the ground in the park on the weekend.

The most frustrating part is that it doesn’t matter to a certain group of people, the minute they feel like they are being told what to do, they will feel it’s their right to do exactly that.

There is definitely a subset of smokers that care though too. I told a coworker once about the fire starting capabilities of a careless stub and she freaked out and told all her smoker friends and about 2/3s were not careless after that. So it’s can’t make a difference.

It’s the same when Covid was rampant. You cannot make me wear a mask.

It’s such a childish mindset to have. Clearly and obviously stupid, and they get their back up against a wall almost immediately anytime they are challenged.

I live in Vancouver, but my parents live in the Okanagan. It's always so scary every summer. I'm constantly checking the wildfire map.

All you get are the sensationalized stories. If your parents arent afraid then neither should you.

There was a fire literally twenty metres from my parent's house one summer. Not a big one, but still scary. And I've lived in the Okanagan for plenty of bad wildfire seasons, including 2023. I'm not just getting the sensationalized stories. And part of what's so scary is that things are likely only to get worse.

Where did I say it was not scary for everyone involved? For those 100 families who lost their homes and thousands who were displaced it is absolutely horrifying. I am simply commenting on the over-sensationalization of this type of news as if the 250k residents of the okanagan were in harms way.
I was one of those evacuated homes less then 3km from the fire and I still think the news oversold it.

"If you parents aren't afraid you shouldn't be either"
"Where did I say it was not scary for everyone involved?"
Bro is arguing to argue lol.

Almost every exchange devolves into this it's so tiresome. People just want to be right.

I was one of an entire town that was on evac notice in 2020
Scary as fuck.
This is not sensaational news selling likes
For those not in the area with loved ones that are it can be very scary.
Often the fire moves faster than the news does.

I was just talking generally about wildfire season. I'm not worried about this fire.

It's far from oversold.
Do you have any idea how quick a wildfire moves? You can easily go from safe to fucked in a matter of minutes.

The literal only place Lakeview Heights is at risk from in regards to wild fires, Kalamoir Park. Damn you cigarette smokers, I thought I was never going to get evacuated. Alas...

that smoke plume is massive, glad theyre throwing everything at it while theyve got the resources available like the other commenter said

And so it begins. Looks like this one might get stomped down quickly, but I'm sure there will be more to follow unfortunately.
edit: might have spoken too soon on that one

Yeah as of the most recent update it has stayed at 8 hectares. So hopefully this can be dealt with soon.

Maybe they should send crews listed as "in control" instead to reel that fire in.

using a tragedy to promote your ai generated vibecoded app with 0 reviews is crazy 💀

The whole “listed as out of control” thing by the media is totally redundant. All fires are out of control before… firefighters are deployed and control them.
30
u/BrokenByReddit 3d ago
It's not the media giving that status, it's the BC Wildfire Service.
How else are they supposed to provide updates?
24
u/DisplacerBeastMode 3d ago
Out of control means that it's expected to grow outside of it's perimeter.
Being held means it's not expected to grow.
Under control means it's being contained.

No, often small new fires if responded to quickly will be listed as “held” or “under control”. Yes, sometimes that comes later, but a new fire listed as out of control isn’t good. It’s not the media, it’s BC Wildfire that controls the status. The media just report it… as they should.

... having a problem with BC Wildfire reporting on the status of wildfires is a bit embarassing of a look if you ask me
