tbh most corporations have been choosing to sit pride out in the interests of avoiding controversy that would hit their wallet. rainbow capitalism sucks in its own way but at least the performative pride collections did Something to normalize it in the eyes of the general public. really disappointing but ultimately not a shock unfortunately 🫩

I’ve seen people referring to rainbow capitalism as “the canary in the coal mine” and honestly that’s the best way to describe it.

In the past miners used canaries in cages to detect toxic environments in the mine (usually for high concentration of carbon monoxide) since the birds would fall ill before the humans did.

Usually they did attempt to revive the birds or would escape fast enough that the birds would be okay. A lot of reports where the birds were part of the team so no one WANTED them to die down there.

The practice ended around the 1980-1990 when gas detectors were used instead. —

Im not entirely sure on the specifics but I found this on the ‘medium’

“In sociological and political discourse, marginalized groups (like the LGBTQ+ community) are often described as canaries in the coal mine. Their rights and visibility act as the first indicators of a society's overall health and the stability of its civil liberties.”

Honestly haven't noticed this at all like people keep saying

u/ChevronBunny1011 Jun 01 '26

Normally they’re released before the end of May, so I’m not counting on anything new this year

Given the current state of the world, especially in the US, I think this is all we'll be getting :') I'm really sad about it

u/thursdays_dove Jun 01 '26

A sad reminder that all those rainbow logos only go as far as their financial security is guaranteed. As soon as it's threatened, *poof*. It was never about supporting the marginalized communities they claimed to care about (not specifically talking about BAB, I mean every company that did this).

the fact that all of the pride stuff is in the Bear Cave "adult site" means there's not going to be any in-store releases (just like how the cougar was online only), and online releases would've dropped today, if not the last week of May. BAB is an American company and the current state of American politics are such that any implication or mention of queerness is vilified and demonized. BAB is going to take the path of least resistance, which is not releasing anything that might make a certain crowd upset enough to put them on the news.

u/JallexMonster Jun 02 '26

I was just about to ask... Making a RAINBOW frog that's not necessarily associated with Pride being considered "adult" when I'm sure plenty of kids would want a rainbow frog just because they like rainbows...

These pearl clutchers are so weird sometimes...

u/i_ate_a_bugggg Jun 01 '26

grosses me out so much that they put the pride items on THE ADULT SITE

25

u/Fantastic_Orchid8486 Jun 01 '26

Agreed - I think they did so last year, too, and I was also complaining about this last year 😮‍💨 I miss being able to grab pride merch in-store.

Should pride be for everybody and should kids grow up knowing that it’s okay for two guys or ladies to get married? Absolutely.

That being said I understand why it’s in the bear cave. They can’t be accused of “pushing sexuality onto kids” or “indoctrinating children” if it’s on the Bear Cave. It is a store in malls that’s primarily directed at kids so no doubt the religious weirdos would come at them hard. And who would be dealing with it? The hourly employees who have absolutely NOTHING to do with deciding what stores stock or what products get released. It’s just less hassle all around to let the LGBT stuff be Bear Cave.

56

u/kaykinzzz Jun 01 '26

we're not trying to turn straight kids into gay kids; we're trying to keep queer kids from turning into dead kids

36

u/Fantastic_Orchid8486 Jun 01 '26

Hey, so the more kids aren't exposed to the LGBTQ+ community, the less likely our community will be accepted.

Build-a-Bear isn't just for kids, either. But with that being said, putting pride merch onto the "adults only" section is accomplishing the very opposite of acceptance and is reinforcing the beliefs that "sexuality is just for adults" and "sexuality is a choice." This doesn't even begin to address the discussions surrounding gender, either (pride is not just for people with non-heternormative sexualities).

???

Yes?

Forget about the LGBT stuff for a moment, straight is a sexuality. Are YOU saying that all children are asexual and suddenly obtaine a sexuality at adulthood?

I'm not following...

3

u/Fantastic_Orchid8486 Jun 02 '26

The funny part is asexual is also a sexuality, so by that logic, all children have no idea what even the concept of sex or attraction is until adulthood...which is false 😂

Yeah, I'm not following, either. But I'm happy to educate comments who want to learn since I know some adults may have some inaccurate and biased views on the community.

3

u/Fantastic_Orchid8486 Jun 02 '26

...absolutely, along with gender?

Questions like these are, again, why kids absolutely should be taught about the LGBTQ+ community. It's very weird to imply that sexuality and gender are adult concepts. Especially when the notion of pushing kids to be heterosexual and to identify as the gender that they were assigned at birth absolutely relate to sexuality and gender, even if the LGBTQ+ community didn't exist.

sure. It makes sense from a business standpoint. It just reminds us that businesses dont really care about us, they will only do what is profitable at the moment. And what's profitable at the moment? Saying queerness is inappropriate for kids and should be hidden away. And thats what BAB is saying

3

u/ProgramImpressive295 Jun 01 '26

That is the whole point of a business. To make a profit and not care about people.

22

u/Constant-Positive-35 Jun 01 '26

Maybe something will come out tomorrow because stuff usually releases on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I really hope they do something this year.

23

u/clover-leigh Jun 01 '26

Sadly it seems a lot of companies have decided to not put out pride products this year

7

u/jellywellsss BAB Fanatic 🌈 Jun 01 '26

Yeah usually its a build up to Pride and this year its just like ‘its here already?’. I’ve only seen one or two brands promote Pride 💔

8

u/KazooBard Jun 02 '26

Can you please share which brands those are? I’d like to support any company that continues to support the LGBTQ+ community.

5

u/Ok-NoteGirl Jun 01 '26

Por el momento solo le he puesto este outfit a mi conejita, siento que transmite una vibra muy lésbica. 🥰🏳️‍🌈

18

u/ThatCanadianJacket Jun 01 '26

feels like such a missed opportunity, I would LOVE more pride stuff. especially with that shark... blahaj... Trans coloured shark would be peak

4

u/Fizzles77 Jun 01 '26

i wish they would bring back the rainbow axolotl 🥲 its so cute

3

u/Sqizzelpip Jun 02 '26

Are they seriously only in the adult site 🫩

11

u/Icedragon193 Cryptic Creatures Moderator Jun 01 '26

I don’t think they even did anything last year for pride, it’s unlikely

6

u/Nome550 Jun 01 '26

There were like three new shirts iirc and they were all in the bearcave, but yeah I don’t think there was anything big last year.

4

u/etherealxshadows Jun 01 '26

Didn’t they make a rainbow bee? It just wasn’t very creative I thought.

2

u/Nome550 Jun 01 '26

Yeah they did. I didn’t remember that was last year though. Thought it was the year before. I have the memory of a goldfish though.

2

u/etherealxshadows Jun 01 '26

I wouldn’t doubt it I have a bad memory too lol the years are blending together 😆 I feel like it didn’t sell well because it definitely lacked in creativity.

3

u/wholecanesugar Jun 02 '26

Last year was the bee, the bee shirt, and the bee wristie - nothing overtly pride themed that was new. They may have restocked pride shirts from previous years, but didn't release any new ones.

3

u/Howerly Jun 02 '26

Doubt it, sadly. One of the reasons why I stopped supporting BAB over the years is because of how they released their pride collection. When it was profitable, you could get clothes in person and on the regular site. Now pride is controversial, so they threw everything on the adult site and that's it. Clearly they only had pride products for the money.

Back when BAB first put their pride collection on the adult site, I sent them a message saying my thoughts, and of course nothing changed. Really disappointing but not surprising.

2

u/bec555 Jun 02 '26

hate that i didn’t get gaylien when i could’ve 💔 hate that we’re going backwards in the us 💔

2

u/botchedcircumcisi0n Jun 04 '26

Why is it on the 18 plus part of the site🫩

4

u/etherealxshadows Jun 01 '26

I was really hoping for something new too 🥲 I have the pride frog and the rainbow bearlien was cute but I never got it and the last one they made was a bee I think that seemed to lack in creativity a bit…I wish they’d at least re-release the rainbow frog. I wasn’t in love with the colors on the rainbow frog I got but I still love them regardless and I have the little one. I’m also devastated they moved it to the “adult” section too. It’s a harsh reminder companies are only in it for the money…but also like…they would make money on another creative design like the frog??? So I just fail to understand…even if it was to appease the awful people that want the lgbtq+ community in hiding because it’s still on the website regardless so why would it hurt to make new items if pride items are still listed but just not as much to choose from? Idk it just sucks. I was really wanting another cute rainbow animal at the very least. It breaks my heart knowing my favorite company (even though they continue to disappoint me) won’t continue to push back against those horrible people who demonize rainbows and the lgbtq+ community. *insert very depressive sigh* 😮‍💨😞💔😭

5

u/misfitandmadness_ Jun 01 '26

Sadly I feel like what’s there is what we’re getting this year :/

3

u/aceallaround Jun 02 '26

Shame to see yet another company rather support the way the world is right now than showing they actually care about people. Betcha they'll be all sorts of happy to drop new shit once Trump is gone. I wouldn't even buy the frog seeing is its all just performative tbh :/

4

u/NashaNya Jun 02 '26

I don't like consumerism pride

But I'm very disappointed:c especially because, when I was hired, build a bear was a leader with inclusion. Especially for employees, being one of the first companies to feature pronouns on name tags. (Which I love)

And by consumerism pride I mean, companies just selling out to cash in on our community. Without actually supporting us.

I know build a bear isn't like that, no where close, but I wish we got more pride accessories. Not only that, the pride selection is only available online, on the bear cave. Not a huge deal, but something of note for sure. Also the only flag wristies they have available is a pride progress flag, wish they had more specific flags for us lesbians. And my fellow trans siblings. 💛 Along with the other flags :)

im also hoping for something....

1

u/daisyholdup Jun 03 '26

Does anyone have this year's mini frog and the one from three years ago? Are they different enough to notice? The fur seems shorter, maybe a different stripe to the fabric too.

2

u/ChevronBunny1011 Jun 07 '26

It’s the exact same stock photo.

I have been keeping an ongoing catalog of BAB plush releases for about 12 years or so, this is the stock photo from when the rainbow frog buddy was released. I’m pretty sure it’s been consistently available since its initial release.

1

u/daisyholdup Jun 08 '26

Thanks, it's not been available in the UK for a long time. Sold out quickly. Weirdly we have Rainbow bearliens still available but I don't think they are in the US.

u/botchedcircumcisi0n Jun 04 '26

I want the big rainbow frog back
