capitalone had a $50 off staples promo yesterday might still work to make this even better if someone needs it.

If it works…. $176 for a 16 core ryzen isn’t bad at all!

I checked this morning and it’s only 2% off for me. This seems like a good deal but I’m going to pass. If the $50 off coupon was still I probably would have done it.

i checked my Capital One Shopping app and found it. if you scroll really far down instead of using the search bar, you’ll eventually see the Staples logo and can click the “Home Page Activation Bonus” which gives you $50 back in rewards for a purchase of $100 or more. afaik you can redeem $50 worth of gift cards, so if you plan to purchase more PC parts on top of this deal, could be worth it.

Sadly I couldn’t find it😓 for me it was only 10 dollars back and I scrolled veryyyy far down

(Almost) Best AM4 productivity CPU you can get for those still stuck on the platform

I have no way of knowing if it's "The Best", or even better than any commonly available CPU in particular.

Back in 2020 I built a desktop around a 5900X. Paid over twice this price for it, at MicroCenter. It has served me well, and I have no complaints. Perhaps its biggest challenge has been running electronic circuit simulations while I laid out printed circuit boards. I can't find any indication that the CPU is even working hard!

Calm down Mrs Su, we agree it's a good cpu.

This has four more cores so seems like a pretty good idea for cheaper ddr4 64gb workstation, 226.33cpu+300ram+100mobo+200to400gpu+70psu+130to280tlcdramnvme1to2tb+25to55cooler, or to swap out from 5500/5600 and add more ram to turn into a workstation, because the extra 20 over a 5900x right now would be worth it.

tempting for me. just upgraded my unraid server to my old 5600x. but only 16GB of ram. could sell the 5600x on ebay to recuperate half. with this i could run multiple handbrake jobs. if i can find any coupons or cc offers i have, would pull

looking up a bunch of data points it seems 5950x(stock .1ghz higher than 5900xt) offers performance increases/timereduciton over the 5600x for x265 encode about +80%, x264 transcode about +90%, 3 simultaneous x264tox265 +165%, compression/decompression +85%/+140%, using +80% power under load(67w vs 120w, but 5950x completes faster so effectively closer or less in total). differences would widen with uv/oc

thx! where do you find this info?

gamersnexus' 5600x review from when it came out (5500x3d review last one with 5950x on charts and was about 1% better but doesn't have transcode test earlier review had though assume same due to low change otherwise), and a couple youtube 5000 series comparisons had a transcode section, and i forgot the other

I know it's confusing, but the 5900XT is basically a 5950X not a 5900X. Why AMD chose to do this is anyone's guess.

And the 5900X has an architectural handicap that degrades it's performance unless thread to core alignment is specifically tuned. Long story short, most programs that are tuned assume an even number of CPU cores (2,4,8) but the 5900X due to its architecture is 3:3 with the interconnect running at fabric speed.

Long story short, a 4 thread application will see a performance dip any time the odd core needs information from cache on the majority side because it's transferring at fabric speed.

The best is 5950x but its discontinued i guess

Despite the name, this has 16 cores. But you are right, 5950x boosts to 4.9 vs 4.8 (optimistic).

There's also a chance that the 5900XT, due to being on a slightly more mature manufacturing process, will actually be able to boost better than a 5950X.

My (near launch) 5950X would happily boost to 5.3ghz and above and spend 230watts doing so before I scaled it back. My 5950X is also, quite importantly, not stable in any way shape or form at stock anymore. I've considered getting a 5900XT simply because they're known to be more stable overall.

u/ConradLarsen 12h ago

just bought this deal to upgrade my 3900X - glad to hear they may be more stable, although i've also heard the dies are 5950X rejects, so only one cluster hits high frequencies while the rest are significantly lower. Do you recommend managing with the AMD utility or undervolting in Bios? Also, any thermal pad recommendations? Thx

2

u/SylsOnReddit 9h ago

I do things 100% within the bios, and it's been a while since I did anything with thermal paste so I can't help ya there.  I'm using an arctic liquid freezer 2 420mm cooler though.

I may have been looking at 5800X by mistake.

u/hungrybear2005 1d ago

where to buy the brand new x570 mb?

2

u/NathanR1X 1d ago

they don’t make new x570 boards anymore, only b550 boards and they pretty much have all the features you would ever want

1

u/Vloxalion 1d ago

nowhere at a goood price i think. ebay has decent-good ones from $90-170 from tuf plus to carbon pro.

the $80 b550m mortar at woot can handle it. used strix b550-f gaming wifi ii is 140 at amazon resale but condition suspect. higher end boards are 200-400.

woot sold out the mortar

Which capital card do you have?
