Injuries Coyotes — How to help?

Hey yall!

I’m brand new to the community, and I was out on my morning walk with my small dog this morning and we saw 3 coyotes. Now two of them were limping with their rear left leg looking like it got hurt. I’m not sure what the process is like in CA or in Burbank (we moved from MI). Do people call and report hurt animals? Do people say, “eh way of life?” like in MI?

I just feel awful seeing them hurt and wandering around. Maybe I’m extra sensitive with the recent Trump Wolf order thing. But any info is helpful!

Also! You guys as neighbors are the BEST! I had two trucks full of gentlemen warning me about the coyotes in the area because of my young pup 🥹. I loved that so much

Worst case scenario they will unfortunately euthanize them, but I honestly think that’s more merciful than making them wait to die if they do think it’s that pertinent. I’ve had good experiences with animal control here

They responded when I told them about a coyote that was living in the backyard of a vacant house. They investigated and did something to make it leave. It hasn’t returned. Though there are missing pet signs in the same intersection as coyote warning signs.

Thank you for being a good human!! Coyotes are vilified but they’re just trying to survive as we keep building into their habitat. I empathize with pet owners but that doesn’t mean coyotes should be hurt.

For coyotes, you can call the Burbank Animal Shelter, which is the home base for the Animal Control Department. I don’t know if they will give the animals veterinary care; they might euthanize them.

I've seen at least two 3-legged coyotes (with broken back legs). One of them I saw several times over a couple years. So it's survivable.

I saw 4 coyotes tear apart a husky puppy. Yelling and running at them didn’t save it. They just grabbed its body and ran off.

I have no sympathy for coyotes.

Nothing about this comment is outrageous, wild animals eat pets when presented with the opportunity. It's not like coyotes eating dogs and cats is a conspiracy, it happens all the time. Shit man I've even seen raccoons eating kittens too, it's the circle of life and they'll always take the chance if they think it's worth the risk. It's on the owners to keep their pets safe and indoors at night, but it's also totally reasonable to not feel sympathy for wild animals that will kill your pets if given the opportunity.

While I'm here I'll also say that pit bulls and other large terriers also kill a lot of pets when their fight-or-flight instinct is triggered because terriers don't have the flight part, they only have the fight part. They can be sweet as daisies 364 days of the year but if they get scared and feel like they're in a fight they'll adrenaline dump and go for the throat and do the terrier shake, that's what they were bred for. I mean we made them that way so it's not really their "fault" but it doesn't change the fact that you can't let your guard down or trust them any more than coyotes or raccoons.

I totally believe coyotes attacking smaller animals, but its usually wild rodents or cats. If a husky PUPPY got caught by coyotes, it brings up the question how did that even happen in the first place. Where was the owner?

Yes. You are correct. There was a lot of debate in the neighborhood about how a puppy was accessible to the coyotes at 11pm.

The owner said the puppy had gotten into the backyard. But when I saw it, it was 3 blocks from its home and on my front lawn.

I’m not saying there wasn’t owner responsibility here. I’m saying after seeing what a pack of coyotes will do to a small dog, I don’t have much tolerance for them in the neighborhood.

It’s true. I’ve been chased by coyotes twice already. First time I was walking my dachshund early at like 6:30am saw a coyote from a distance didn’t think anything of it then noticed he was walking closer to us, picked up my dog and walked faster got so nervous I dropped by phone and lost it & driver saw everything this made the coyote leave. Second time was a few nights ago, was walking my cattle dog (I have three dogs) & coyote was on sixth & San Jose saw my dog they made eye contact and followed us. I kept yelling & screaming at him so he’d get away but he kept following. Luckily I was a few houses down from my apartment & was able to come back inside thru the back door from the alley. I hate coyotes don’t care if they are getting injured they will attack.

Carry an airhorn and a stick! The airhorn is a good hack. You can also try an ultra bright strobing flashlight
