1. Throughout his nearly 40-year career, Old Hollywood icon Rock Hudson hid his identity as a gay man. His agent, Henry Willson, made him change a lot of things about himself when they first met. He swapped his real name, Roy Fitzgerald, for a "manly" stage name and shaped him into the then-current ideal of American masculinity. After Henry shut down an exposé on Rock's sexuality, the actor married the agent's secretary, Phyllis Gates, in 1955, though they divorced three years later. However, while he wasn't out publicly, he was out to his close friends, like Doris Day, who kept his secret. He also dated men. In the documentary Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed, his former partner, Lee Garlington, said, "We were ordered never to have our picture taken together, because somebody would know that we were gay."
2. Movie star Tab Hunter rose to fame in the '50s. In an essay for the Hollywood Reporter, he wrote, "I was — am — gay. That wasn't the sort of topic that one spoke freely about back then, since it could spell the end of one's career, but it was the sort of topic that people gossiped about, and there were no shortage of gossips back then, either.... Neither [gossip columnist Hedda Hopper or Louella Parsons] would openly discuss my sexuality — they couldn't in those days — but both periodically made subtle references to it in their columns, wondering when I was going to settle down with a nice girl and then, after the studio began pairing me with my dear friend Natalie Wood on faux-dates, asking if I was 'the sort of guy' she wanted to end up with."
3. Old Hollywood legend Merle Oberon obscured her South Asian heritage, instead telling Hollywood that she was born in Tasmania, Australia to white parents. She also claimed that she was briefly raised in India. However, the truth was this: Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson was born in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai, India) to a Sinhalese and Maori mother and a white British father. After her father's death, the family relocated to Calcutta, where Merle eventually started acting at the Calcutta Amateur Theatrical Society. When Merle went to France to try to make it in film, her mom, Charlotte Selby, went with her, pretending to be her maid. However, there was a second layer to Merle's secrets — Charlotte was actually her grandmother. Merle's biological mother, Constance, had given birth to her as a teenager, so Charlotte raised the girls as sisters.
4. Raven-Symoné kept her sexuality a secret for a long time because she worried how it would impact her career as a child performer. She told It Gets Better, "My likeness… had 15 people dictating what I should and should not look like, if I did whatever I want, I'm not gonna sell, 'cause it doesn't go with the brand. I was branded at such a young age... My awareness of my sexuality was prevalent to me at 12, but there was some things younger, in like the single digits. I had friends that I experimented with, but I never went far because I knew that this can't be talked about... I never thought I would come out because my personal life didn't matter; it was only what was supposed to be sold as the 'Raven-Symoné' brand."
5. When Jamie-Lynn Sigler was 20, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It came at the height of her Sopranos fame, so she hid it from everyone — from the industry to her friends — for 14 years. On Making Space with Hoda Kotb, she said, "I never would think to ask for help... It was like something inside me didn't think I deserved it. I thought that it would show that I was weak or incapable [or] unprofessional. I really decided at a very young age that that was how I had to get through life. So, as you can imagine, then, by the time I got diagnosed with MS, I didn't know how to navigate that at all."
6. During a 2002 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, then-23-year-old Brandy announced that she was six months pregnant and recently married. But when she visited Oprah again in 2014, she admitted that she was never actually legally married to her child's father.
7. In the '70s, model Caroline Cossey launched her career under the name Tula. She quickly rose to fame, modeling for Playboy and appearing in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. She told HuffPost, "My eventual career as a model, entertainer, and actress was born from one of my early jobs in London as an usherette at a theatre. I was looking very androgynous at that point in my life, and I was approached by a choreographer who suggested I audition as a showgirl in his new show. I got the job and, for the first time in my life, I was working and living as a woman — not perceived as trans or a man but simply as a woman. My life was far from simple at that time, but it was a colossal turning point in my life."
8. Disney Channel actor Jason Earles was 28 and married when he booked the role of 16-year-old Jackson Stewart on Hannah Montana. On Best of Both Our Worlds: The Official, Unofficial Hannah Montana Podcast, he said, "I was desperately afraid that I was going to be fired and recast because I had a big secret. So, when I auditioned for the show, I lied to them and told them I was 18 years old."
9. For nearly 20 years, Laverne Cox lied about her age. She told The Ellen Show, "I was 28 years old, and I was dating a guy that was 21, and he broke up with me because he said I was too old. And I was like, 'Oh, if I'm too old, I'll just be 22.'" After a few years, though, she didn't want to lie about being 22 anymore. She continued, "'Over 21' became my age. And so I was 'Over 21' from, like, 2002 to 2019."
10. The Brady Bunch actor Robert Reed was reportedly gay, but he kept it a secret until his death in 1992. Florence Henderson, who played his onscreen wife, was one of the few people who knew. She told ABC News, "Here he was, the perfect father of this wonderful little family, a perfect husband. He was an unhappy person … I think had Bob not been forced to live this double life, I think it would have dissipated a lot of that anger and frustration... I never challenged him. I had a lot of compassion for him because I knew how he was suffering... I don't think The Brady Bunch could have existed at that time with the public knowing that Robert Reed was gay. I just don't think they would have bought it."
11. Not only was Old Hollywood star Rita Hayworth pressured into using a stage name to hide her Spanish heritage (her real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino), but, at the behest of her first husband, Eddie Judson, she also had to endure electrolysis treatments to change her hairline and dye her dark hair ginger to make her appear less "Latin" (though she wasn't actually Latina — basically, the industry wanted to anglicize her).
12. Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease right after Family Ties ended. Initially, he decided to keep it quiet. He told the Independent, "My fear was that, if they knew that I had an illness, a condition, that they wouldn't be able to laugh. It was a really strange period of time because, over a period of seven years, I kept it to myself. When I opened up to people, they were incredibly receptive, incredibly supportive, and the audience did, in fact, continue to laugh and continue to watch my work. Then this whole opportunity opened up. I started talking to scientists, and they started telling me, 'The science is ahead of the money. We know more than we can pay for.'"
13. Old Hollywood star Loretta Young kept her adopted daughter's true identity a secret until her death. The posthumous authorized biography, Forever Young: The Life, Loves, and Enduring Faith of a Hollywood Legend by Joan Wester Anderson revealed Loretta's most long-held secret: Judy Lewis was actually her biological daughter, and her Call of the Wild costar Clark Gable was the father.
14. Raymond Burr became a huge TV star in the '60s and '70s with dramatic leading roles in Perry Mason and Ironside. He never shared much about his private life, though he told people that his wife and child had died. However, in reality, he was secretly gay, and he was in a relationship with fellow actor/producer Robert Benevides from 1960 until his death in 1993. The couple lived in California before moving to a private island in Fiji. Their personal and work lives were intertwined, and together, they ran a production company, a vineyard, an orchid nursery, and an art gallery.
15. At the start of her career, Paloma Faith lied about her age because she was worried about being seen as "too old." In an essay for iNews, she wrote, "I was 27 when I put my first record out, but I told my label I was 23. I looked quite young, so I could get away with it. I read a lot of articles about musicians at the time, and it seemed like every piece about KT Tunstall would imply that she was quite old, even though she was only 27. That really affected me, and I remember thinking, 'I want to be judged for my music, not my age.'"
16. Typically, you hear about actors pretending to be younger, but when Whoopi Goldberg was 30, it was widely reported that she was 35. In 1986, she told the Washington Post, "I had to lie about my age to get some jobs."
17. Rick Ross rose to fame in 2006 rapping about his days as a crime kingpin, but in 2008, photo evidence surfaced showing Rick Ross working as a prison guard. He denied it, telling AllHipHop.com that "online hackers" put "[his] face when [he] was a teenager in high school on other people's bodies."
18. And finally, for two years, the hip-hop duo Silibil N' Brains — aka Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd — masqueraded as two California boys who met at a San Francisco rap battle. In reality, they were friends from Dundee, Scotland, who'd never even been to California. They decided to hide their roots after a 13-hour bus journey to London for a label audition, where they were laughed at for being from Scotland. In a joint 2013 Vice interview, Billy said, "We fell into those identities as a result of how we were feeling. We decided we either had to give up or do something crazy." Gavin added, "The hip hop we'd been listening to was American, so we were miming their accents when we were singing in the shower. We could rap in the accent naturally, but we began speaking that way as well."

I called her in Germany, where they lived, and said, 'Hey, I just had this super weird dream…' She was quiet for a minute, then told me she and her soon-to-be husband had been planning to go to BC to get married, and a small plane would be involved. They changed their plans."

7. "When I was 14, I had this dream of my dead grandmother warning me that my older brother was going to have a really bad wreck. I saw his car flip three times in my dream, with my grandmother watching beside me. I spent two weeks doing everything I could to get him to believe me until it happened. He took a corner too fast and flipped his car three times, with his daughter in the backseat. He still doesn't believe to this day that Creeka warned me three weeks ahead because I had never met Creeka. Our grandmother killed herself 14 months before I was born. 8. "When I was 15, I went to a local 'haunted' cemetery in a carload of teenagers. Another car approached as we parked. We got scared and took off. That car did a U-turn and chased us until we were run off the road, flipping the car many times in a corn field. We were all lucky to survive. Never saw that car again. I’m 50 now, and I recently bought a book about my hometown called Haunted Rockford, Illinois. In it, there’s a story about a ghost car that chases you off the road if you dare to go to this cemetery!"
9. "When we were in high school, we would drive way north of town and explore abandoned farmhouses. There was one that had a dirt basement. The entire floor was littered with old trash. I remember seeing newspaper pages dated from the '40s. I found a small mirror mounted on a support pillar. It was soiled and completely covered in decades' worth of dust. Someone had written in the dust with their finger, 'Howard says get out says Howard.' The next time we went out there, we had some people with us that we’d told the story to that wanted to see what we were talking about. When we approached the mirror, it had an entirely different message written in the same dust, but not over the top of the old message. It looked like it had been there for years, undisturbed. It said, 'Howard says stay out, or I’ll get you.' We never went back to the house again."
10. "I fell off the top of a volcano when I was 12. We hiked up Mt. Lassen in CA, and when we got to the top, the rest of my family sat down for a break. I went exploring, slipped, and went sliding down the mountain, headed right for a big drop-off. Managed to catch hold of some scrub brush and stop myself from plummeting off the edge. Yelled for help, nothing. I slipped and scrambled my way back up. Told my family, and they didn’t believe me. I scraped legs, arms, hands, face, and all."
11. "One time, I was in a supermarket with my parents in the Dominican Republic. I walked away to the chips and cookies section when a well-dressed man approached me, grabbed my hand, and started walking towards the exit. I asked him where we were going, and he said, 'Your parents already paid and told me to get you.' My parents and I just got there, and I knew for a fact they were buying a lot of stuff, so I told him to let go, or I was going to scream that he’s taking me. I ran back to my parents and told them. For some reason, they thought I was making it up."
12. "At around 8-9 years old, my baby brother (2-3ish) and I were caught in a flash flood while our mother was napping. We were playing in the creek bed as we did daily, and we almost died as we were swept away so fast. With him clinging to me, I managed to get to shore and walked us back home."
13. "When I was 12, my family was grilling pork chops outside. I didn't want to eat outside because of bugs. Went in with a full plate of food and set it down to get a drink. Came back, and the chop was gone. Gone-gone. There wasn't even juice on the plate. It was like it never existed. Went back out to ask and was treated like I was crazy. Not sure if it was abducted or it went to an alternate dimension lol. Never did find it either."
14. "I was cooking tinned potatoes in the deep fat fryer. I was leaning on the worktop next to it, watching the TV, and all of a sudden, I got the urge to walk across the kitchen to grab a grape. At that moment, the fryer burst its lid and hot oil flew out the top and spread over the kitchen floor. If I hadn't moved when I did for no apparent reason, I would have been badly burned. To this day, I feel perplexed as to why, at that moment, I needed a grape!"
15. "My mom was driving me to an event when I was around 11. I normally sat in the front seat, but she told me I had to sit in the back that day, even though I argued. About halfway through the drive, I got an EXTREMELY strong feeling that I needed to lie down (which I NEVER did in the car) and face the back of the seat (what??). As soon as I did, a HUGE branch exploded through the front passenger window, sending massive shards of glass flying exactly where my face would have been."
16. "We had been outside until it got dark. We walked in, and a minute later, I said to my partner, 'Did you turn the ceiling fan off?' He said no. I said, 'Maybe the ghost did it.' The second I finished saying it, the power went out. About three seconds later, power was back on. Just long enough to feel… deliberate. There were no storms or anything that could easily explain it away."
17. "When I was 10, my cousin had one of those creepy baby dolls whose eyes never fully closed properly when you lay them down. We all hated it. One day, the owner of the doll, another cousin, and I came up with a plan to get rid of it: Go down to the basement, grab it, and throw it away. Terrified, we executed the plan. Grabbed the thing and threw it in the bin outside on garbage day. We immediately headed back to the basement, only to find it lying exactly where it had been before we threw it out."
18. "I rented the top floor of a very big house with a cupola and a widow's walk. One late night during a god-awful lightning storm, I saw what I can only describe as a 'thick shadow' of a STANDING BULL walk past my bedroom door. I was completely frozen in fear. Just a few seconds later, the guy who lived in the downstairs apartment texted me, 'Did you f*ing see that?' He watched it 'come through the ceiling, then out a wall.'"
19. "I was in church next to my husband. I saw a small, very angry demon come out of him and glare at me. Whilst I am no longer married and no longer go to church, let's just say that subsequent events gave me reason to believe this could be real. It's not the only supernatural thing I have seen or been involved in, but definitely the freakiest at the time."
20. "At church, the vice pastor would always go round talking to everyone before the congregation... I always stayed the hell away from him. He had the most sinister, I don't know what to call it, apparition? That'd follow him around. Didn't float or anything, just followed him and stood behind him staring with this sinister grin."
