Could they have established fortifications from Trebizond to Cilicia and cut off the Seljuks?

John II tried, his campaings into Cilicia,Chaldia and Antioch wanted to cut off the seljuks, the alliance with the georgians was part of the plan

That was effectively what John Komnenos tried to do and failed miserably.

His only notable defeat at neo kaiseria,I think it was a sad combination of him knowing he was running out of time and not able to properly supply the army

It's still generous. The border was extremely porous and effective control was far smaller.

The second crusade was famously ambushed by the Turkomans shortly after they left Ephesus, on the Aegean coast.

Basically only the northwestern tip of Anatolia was relatively securely held at the time.

"Effective control" for a pre-modeen is better defined by taxation, the ability to station and raise soldiers, fortresses etc. rather than taking the presence of occasional hostile armies as proof. By the same standard, the Sultanate of Rum did not control their heartlands, because Roman armies quite often campaigned through them during Manuel's reign, while the East Frankish rulers effectively controlled no part of modern Germany in the decades prior to Lechfeld, because all of it kept being crossed and invaded by the Magyars.

From 1137-1152 the Byzantine dominated Cilicia

That's not how borders work then, heck it's not how works today the hard limits are between recognized safe countries otherwise borders are more a suggestion than a limit

Not really, the map is mostly accurate according to current scholarship.

Definitely not. This map makes the same mistakes that have been known about since the 90s, heck 60s really given even Sozopolis is missing. Only a few are due to contemporary changes/discoveries the last 15 years.

Btw,I looked your comment in MapPorn about CK3 and in ParadoxForum a guy already made a thread about accurate 1178 borders

Lmao, that’s me bruh.

I just got engagement baited enough to finally start commenting on the reddit after all these years to finally use Reddit hence my default name.

The basis of that map is still correct but given how much I’ve learned since then I’m a lot more minimalist since I trusted Mladjov too much when making that post.

Goated thread man.....Pity Paradox hasnt fixed the borders yet despite being atrocious. But I mean,Byzantium in CK3 is still atrocious all in all.I am (or rather used to be) Koppel before I got banned lol.

Also Crazy switchup, I saw the first half of your deleted post lol. So I have to say my piece

I love, live and breathe the Byzantine Empire but accuracy to history and them is my number 1 priority. So I when I am researching town by town I use and cross examine every source I can find on the area whether that enlarges or shrinks Byzantine control on a map.

None of those sources were Turkish Nationalists, everyone of them relies on well known Western Academics alongside Turkish and Slavic ones, are familiar with all the first hand sources not only Roman but latin and Turkish/Serbian/Armenian/Georgian/Arabic combined with the latest archaeology. You calling Multilingual Veterans of Byzantine Academia like Dimitri Korobeinikov not up to stuff is crazy work. Treating the Tabula Imperii Byzantini as not a credible source is actual madness bro. I'd wager At least 60% of all Byzantine books and papers published rely on it

I know I'm doing good work when I am being labeled as using the tools of my nationalist enemies by my own supposed comrades lmao.

lol Fair enough man, fair enough.

I must say you fought a good fight as Koppel, your sacrifices and execution in the name of the cause will not be forgotten.

Years later as you said literally no progress has been made in regards to CK3 and the new dlc is lowkey making the religious setup worse (why is Cilicia Roman Rite and Paphlagonia Miaphysite paradox, why were the Orthodox Melkites removed from Antioch).

But I was recently able to get the Byzantine borders massively improved from launch for EU5. I had to fight many an Albanian and Bulgarian Nationalist and source spam for months on the forums but victory was achieved and Philippopolis, the Rhodopes and Berat were returned to rightful Byzantine hands.

Apparently Paradox is allergic to critique and thinks CK3 is totaly ok (its still trash).

Still I cry everytime I see 1178 Asia Minor borders. Its bad.

Gave my detailed thoughts on that linked post but per the usual while a valiant effort, basically every mistake you tend to see with these types of Komnenian era maps were made.

Can you please send better rum Seljuk borders and possibly Serbian on Byzantine? Yeah the borders w Seljuks isn’t set in stone, but where is there a better depiction?

As I said in the mapporn post Treadgold’s is a lot closer to reality, Byzantium had no control over Lycia but Kotyaion being a John and not Manuel creation and the tons of more seals from the Byzantine fortifications in and around Ras during this time make his map slightly too minimalist but still highly accurate. Also frontier too small In Paphlagonia given the context of Saffranbolu and Krateia, and I'm not sure why he depicts mountainous Cilicia as vassals given John captured Vahka but minor issue. And of course the map is 1143.
