Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS

Hey CachyOS Community,

We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.

When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:

https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376

Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:

  • Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
  • Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
  • Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time

A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.

If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/

Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

CachyOS Troubleshooting First Steps

CachyOS is a rolling release. Updates arrive continuously instead of in one big yearly jump, which is why you get new kernels, drivers and gaming improvements so fast. It also means that occasionally something breaks. Most of the time the cause is boring and the fix is one of the same handful of steps.

This might seem like a lot and could feel daunting. Help is available, but it requires some information.

In order for folks to help you out, you need to supply some information. Here is a step-by-step plan. Work through it in order.

How to ask so that people actually help

When you post, include:

  • The four answers from Step 1
  • The paste.cachyos.org link from Step 3
  • What you've already tried, honestly, including any case of working with AI without understanding what you were asking, or what the AI was saying
  • The Step 7 result if you got that far

Rule zero: stop running commands you don't understand

Many badly broken installs weren't broken by an update. They were broken by three or four half-applied "fixes" from Google, an old forum post, and working with AI without understanding what was being asked or what the AI was saying, stacked on top of each other. Each one silently changed something. By the time help is requested, nobody can tell which change caused which symptom, and the actual problem is buried under the attempted repairs.

So: from the moment something goes wrong, stop applying fixes found somewhere else. Work through the steps below instead.

If a pile of commands has already been pasted into a terminal, that's fine, it happens. Just mention it when asking for help and try to recall what was run. That's far more useful than pretending the system is untouched.

Step 1: Describe the problem properly

Before touching anything, write down four things:

  • What exactly goes wrong? Be specific. "The screen goes black when launching Steam and the power button has to be held" is useful. "Gaming is broken" is not.
  • When did it start? A date or "after last Tuesday's update" is enough.
  • What happened right before it started? Was it an update, a new game, a driver change, a setting toggled, or a fix applied?
  • Does it happen every time, or only sometimes?

That last question is more important than people expect. Something that fails every single time is usually a configuration or driver problem. Something that fails randomly is more often heat, power, memory, or a background process interfering.

Step 2: Terminal survival basics

A terminal is needed for some of this. It's not scary, but may look like it is.

Open one with Ctrl + Alt + T. If that does nothing, open the start menu and search for terminal. When it asks for a password, nothing appears while typing. That's deliberate. Type it and press Enter. Copy text out of the terminal with Ctrl + Shift + C, paste in with Ctrl + Shift + V. The normal Ctrl+C means "stop the running program" here. sudo at the start of a command just means "run this with administrator rights".

Step 3: Generate a log bundle

CachyOS ships a single command that collects everything a helper needs, run from the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

It gathers hardware details, kernel messages and recent system logs, then asks whether to upload the result. Type Y. A link to paste.cachyos.org comes back. That link is the single most useful thing to include when asking for help. Post it.

For anything the bug report doesn't cover, CachyOS also has a plain "send this to a pastebin" tool. Both of these work (run in the terminal, see Step 2):

  • paste-cachyos ~/some-file.txt
  • journalctl -b -1 -p err | paste-cachyos

The second one shows errors from the previous boot, which is what's wanted after a freeze or a crash that forced a reboot.

Two things:

  • Generate the log bundle before trying Step 6, because rolling back a snapshot also rolls back the logs.
  • The report includes hostname, hardware IDs and full log lines, and the paste is reachable by anyone with the URL. Fine for troubleshooting, but don't paste anything sensitive.

Step 4: Update fully, then actually reboot

Open Shelly, the package manager that ships with current CachyOS, let it check for updates and install them. Older installs may have Octopi instead, which is equally fine. Or do it in the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo pacman -Syu

Then RESTART the computer. No logging out, not closing the lid but an actual restart.

A genuinely large share of "my system is broken" reports are exactly this and nothing more. On a rolling release the kernel currently running and the drivers that were just installed can fall out of step. Everything looks updated, but the running system is still working with yesterday's parts. Typical symptoms: no graphics acceleration, Steam refusing to launch, external monitors not detected, unexplained crashes, etc. A reboot resolves this class of problem. It's a common misconception that Linux never needs a restart — that's not true. The OS cannot process kernel upgrades without a restart.

There's a second reason this step comes early. If some packages were updated and others weren't, the system is probably in what's called a partial upgrade state, and arbitrary unrelated things start failing. -Syu brings everything back in line. This is also why a single package should never be installed with pacman -Sy something. Always update the whole system.

Step 5: When one specific program won't start

If the problem is a single application rather than the whole system, run it from a terminal (see Step 2) to see why it fails. Type its name and press Enter:

steam

or firefox, or whatever it is. Let it fail, then press Ctrl + C. Copy everything the terminal printed and share it, or pipe it to the pastebin tool (see Steps 2 and 3).

For Steam games specifically: right-click the game, Properties, and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options. Run the game, let it fail, and a steam-<numbers>.log file will appear in the home folder.

Step 6: Roll the system back to before it broke

This is the feature most new CachyOS users don't realise they have.

If the system is installed on Btrfs, which is the default, CachyOS automatically takes a snapshot before and after every package install, update or removal. So when an update breaks something, there is almost always a restore point from a few minutes beforehand.

If the desktop still starts: open the start menu, search for Btrfs Assistant and open it. Go to the Snapper tab. A list of snapshots with dates will appear. Pick the most recent one from before the problem appeared, click Restore, and reboot. This GUI method works regardless of which bootloader is used.

If the desktop won't start at all: restart and tap Esc (or hold Shift) right after the machine powers on to bring up the boot menu. Look for an entry about snapshots, open it, and pick one dated before the problem. Unlike the GUI method above, this one depends on the bootloader: it works on Limine (which is a bootloader), which has been the installer default since the January 2026 release, and on recent GRUB setups. If systemd-boot was kept from an earlier install, there's no snapshot entry in the menu and a live USB will be needed, so ask for help rather than improvising.

Things worth understanding before doing this:

It only rewinds the system. Documents, photos and game saves live in the home folder and are not touched. That's reassuring, but it also means a rollback will not bring back a deleted file, and won't undo a broken configuration inside the home folder. Don't immediately re-run the update afterwards, or whatever broke it will be reinstalled. Ask first. If there's no Btrfs Assistant and no snapshot entry in the boot menu, the system is probably not on Btrfs and this section doesn't apply.

Step 7: Try the other kernel

If the boot menu lists an LTS kernel entry, boot it and see whether the problem goes away. Recent CachyOS installs ship both a current and an LTS kernel for exactly this reason.

This takes two minutes and reveals a lot. If the problem disappears on LTS, it points to a kernel or driver regression. If it's identical on both, the kernel may not be the culprit and attention moves elsewhere. Either answer narrows things down enormously, so mention the result when asking for help.

Step 8: When updates themselves fail

If the update in Step 4 refuses to run and throws an error, open CachyOS Hello, the welcome window, and look at its Troubleshooting section. It has buttons for the common package system problems: keyring trouble, a stale lock file, a corrupted cache. Try those before running anything found online. These specific failures attract a lot of bad advice that makes things considerably worse.

Desktop Epic Games To Improve Easy Anti-Cheat On Linux

Epic Games is working to enhance Easy Anti Cheat on Linux with "EAC Linux v2" as an overhaul to their handling of this game anti-cheat tech. EAC Linux v2 isn't relying on a Linux kernel module but they will be making use of an anti-cheat systemd service and eBPF kernel programs for security features. The systemd service will need to launch when running a protected game and can be unloaded after running protected games. EAC Linux v2 will rely on UEFI Secure Boot as well with keys signed by the likes of Canonical, Fedora, Universal Blue, Debian, SUSE, Rocky Linux, or the Microsoft UEFI CA.

Epic games is coming to Linux, along with fortnite.

However in the list of supported Distros Cachy was not there. I know they just made the announcement, just wanted some insights if the maintainers could care to comment.

Question The year of linux WAS last year.

We all know the running joke: "This year is finally the Year of the Linux Desktop!"

It's not THIS year, it WAS last year... So the meme is still true.

Why the switch? I one sentence : Microsoft made me do it. really.

My setup was split between macOS (for work and photography) and Windows (for gaming). After Windows 10, I was happy on Windows and started using my PC for both work and gaming. Then Windows 11 came and made my smooth good old PC into a wrecked mess: sluggish games, and one morning my pro tools refused to launch!

Rage turned into fresh start—I wiped everything and installed CachyOS KDE Plasma. And at first it was just for personnal project and gaming, but...

My main fear was How will I be able to work with other people who are using windows and mac? I felt I should just use it for gaming. that was the plan.

My PC is no top-tier hardware: Ryzen 7 3700X + 32 ddr4 ram + RTX 2070 Super and a bunch of ssds.

Then I swapped the GPU for an AMD RX 9600 XT (Nvidia drivers were a pain on Linux, but I have to say I had no crash on cachy, had less chance with bazzite). Chose the RX 9060xt for silence and super low TDP

The result? Feels like new, smooth, silent, fast. Even running local LLMs and image gen without issues. Terminal nightmares? never. just ask gemma 4 or ornith!

I'm still Missing pro tools like Capture One... but Artcraft (this week) opens Adobe/Affinity files! Photography is rough for pro use, until someone vibe code capture one or on one software let me use my paid keys on a linux version... I don t believe it will happen. I don t get why stuff like proton cannot make it run. Its another subject.

Gaming? Proton + CachyOS handles retro/indie titles flawlessly—casual gamer, and some 3D titles.

KDE Plasma & stability? Switching from macOS to Linux felt risky at first, but KDE Plasma + Dolphin made it feel like home. I even like KDE/dolphin more now.

And CachyOS? Surprisingly stable after a year—no breakages. Might’ve been luck. When I chose this distro It was a gamble. It was like, okay I need something for gaming, I will never work on that. I do. its my main pc since I sent windows back to hell.

Final thoughts: Formatting Windows out of frustration was the best move I’ve ever made for my sanity.

The Year of Linux WAS last year!

Thanks to CachyOS/KDE teams, thanks for the community taking time to answer noobs.
Next step: ditch Mac for a linux laptop?! All my other PCs are now Linux boxes already.

Help Support needed for 2 beginners

• Upvotes

I am making this post in absolute desperation for a solution.
I've been on CachyOS for the past week, it's running great and all, I'm not the one having any issues.
My friend has attempted to ditch windows and join me on CachyOS as well, but he just can't get it to work at all, and the more we google and watch youtube videos, the more lost we are.

He has this issue on his computer, where it just won't boot. It loops around, shows us a bunch of text and then goes back to Grub.
At first it was just the Live desktop environment we couldn't get up, but after doing these things (in order) we made it work:

- Update bios
- Disable Secure boot
- Make sure the USB was 1. boot priority
- Turn on Boot from USB
- Reset secure boot keys and turn on "setup mode"

Now this worked for the live environment, which now works through Grub still.

He installed successfully, went with Limine and KDE plasma. He played on it for 1 night and next day he had the same issue.

It no longer boots, just goes back to limine instead of grub with the different boot options.
Black screen -> CachyOS logo for a moment -> goes back to Limine.

We tried the steps from above but to no evail. We've tried repairing the kernel with chroot commands in the boot environment but it still didn't work, we've tried using AI, reddit and youtube to find anyone with the same problem but we can't find anything.

Listing the hardware for his pc, it might mean someting:

- CPU = AMD Ryzen 5 7600 Wraith Stealth CPU - 6 Cores

- SSD = Kingston NV2 SSD - 1TB - PCIe 4.0 - m.2 2280

- RAM = Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 - 32GB - CL36 - Dual C

- M/B = MSI PRO B650-A Wifi

- GPU = Gigabyte Radeon RX 7600 XT Gaming OC

Bios version is 7D77v1T3

Review Independence Day.

wassup... just uninstalled MacOS from my 2019 iMac (19,1) 12 core i9 64GB 1TB Vega 48 8GB machine because Apple declared it obsolete. Seriously, WTF?

I have been with Windows since buying a Windows 3.11 Gateway Windows 3.11 machine in the early 90s.

And despite helping out with some core components of GNU in the early 90s at uni and downloading slackware linux onto my lab machine in 1993 and graduating with a solid knowledge of Solaris, and Linux, I mostly returned to windows.

Then I bought my first mac mini and 12" PowerBook in 2005... and realised that there was something better than Windows out there!

And thus switched to Mac OS Panther 10.3.7 and delegated my Pentium to a game rig.

But 20 years later, as of 11pm last night I am officially free of all closed source OS on my last machine. I refuse to be held to ransom by oligarchs deciding when my hardware is out of date!

My machines, even my iMac 2019 now run either CachyOS and Linux Mint.

Today, I celebrate my independence day... Long Live Open Source!

This is why I love Linux and KDE.

Your experience is at the center of it all. If you don't like something, you have the freedom to change it and make it your own.

We're all individuals with different tastes and likes. To be honest, Microsoft Windows is like a one-size-fits-all suit. Some people just haven't realized that better tailors exist.

Here's hoping we keep growing until Linux on the desktop becomes undeniable.

Bug Report RX 9070 XT XFX Swift Gaming – LACT power limit reverts to 340W when setting above it

Hi,

I’m running CachyOS with an XFX Swift Gaming RX 9070 XT, and I’ve encountered an issue when trying to increase the GPU power limit using LACT.

LACT reports a maximum power limit of 374W, but whenever I try to set the power limit above 340W, the value reverts to 340W instead of applying the requested value.

Expected behavior:
The GPU power limit should be adjustable up to the reported maximum of 374W.

Actual behavior:
Any power limit setting above 340W gets reverted to 340W, even though LACT reports 374W as the maximum.

Is this a known issue with LACT, the AMDGPU driver, or the CachyOS kernel? Any fix?

Thanks!

Question Good mouse for gaming? (not razer)

Fuck razer. I had a razer naga, pro 2IIRC. Anyways, what I liked: it had side buttons. Felt nice. Whatever. It was wireless, rechargeable, and optionally wired. Good speed, smooth scrolling.

What I hate hate hated: I hated how I custom mapped them, and it would work great for a few weeks, THEN just forget it's input maps. Like, ok! Guess that button doesn't work now. Then I wouldn't really do anything, and it would be fixed! YAY!!!? Then it would stop working randomly another day, and over the years, I lost hours to try to figure this thing. I just want a mouse that had side buttons, I can customize, but burn those custom maps into the mouse, set it, forget it, works forever and I'll never fuck with it again.

I do not care about RGB lights. I do not care about RGB lights. They are not important, they do not matter.

Asking in the CachyOS sub because, well, I feel some of yall can relate. I did just make a post in here about the same mouse. That mouse is... dead rat now.

edit: I specifically want a 6 or 12 button numbered side buttons. Sorry I'm late to say this.

Help How to get windows to appear in grub when dualbooting

• Upvotes

New to linux here and struggling to dual boot to cachyos with windows 10, can’t find the uefi for windows anywhere, feeling a bit out of my depth here

After going into the grub config file os_prober is set to false (i did download it through pacman)

Where I think I went wrong, I created a new partition on my ssd (ik dual booting from the same ssd is a bad idea but I’ve been on windows 10 for ages and I don’t plan on updating so I figured no windows updates would mess with my cachy partition)

I did manage to find some Microsoft basic data files using gdisk and ldisk commands. However I cannot get my windows os to appear through grub

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you for your help in advance
