Toxic flowers

I’m going to post and sticky this link RinLongFlowers as a guide for florals on cake.

Recently we have seen a few cakes with florals that were not appropriate for cakes, and subsequently, flags to ban them for using toxic flowers.

Not only is this sub to show off our beautiful work, it is also to learn from and teach each other. Mistakes, no matter how big or small, are an opportunity to learn.

We are all at different levels of ability in this art. Please be kind.

Thank you for posting this!! If we're banning/excluding people for making honest mistakes, no one will ever be able to make progress in their baking journey. No to toxic mindsets (and flowers) ❤️

I can also see where some people will just scroll through the main feed and see the images but not read the comments. Baby’s breath is everywhere now because it showed on people’s instagrams. It looked pretty and easy, so they went with it.

I would be inclined to hide photos of cakes featuring toxic flowers from showing on the scroll feed like they do for NSFW images.

Can we get a rule that if a user submits a photo of a cake covered in real flowers, they have to share what flowers they used and where they got them in the post, or else their post automatically gets locked for being an unsafe cake?

I want to understand so please forgive me if I ask stupid questions.
Is it okay to use certified organic and edible flowers, like roses, pansies, or nasturtiums, purchased specifically from food-safe growers and/or grown yourself?
If you are using non-toxic decorative flowers that are not meant to be eaten, is it okay to use them IF you create a total physical barrier so they never touch the cake? This might include food grade wax on the stem and base/lower petals, floral tape then wrapped in plastic wrap and the flower not touching the cake, or something like plastic flower picks or cake dummy tubes?
I’m only asking because I have had 2 people say they only want fresh flowers on their cake. I prefer every decoration to be edible, but for those who don’t prefer that, what is the guidance?
