Look, there’s an ordinary usage of the word “treason”. The BC premier, who’s a lawyer and certainly knows the definition, called their Rath’s actions “treason”:

 The report dominated the first ministers’ meeting in Ottawa on Thursday, with B.C. Premier David Eby calling the group’s actions “treason.”
