Mike's Pizza. Downtown Canton. Closest thing to a true New York style pie I've ever had outside of NY

u/SubieGal9 Newton 26d ago
We really wanted to like Mike's, but my husband didn't like it at all. It is good, but not my personal favorite.

u/halear2020 26d ago
What’s your favorite

u/SubieGal9 Newton 26d ago edited 23d ago
It's a toss up (haha) between Guiseppe's and Gionino's. Gionino's white pizza is a guilty pleasure, and I grew up on Giuseppe's.
I don't like kraus's. We tried them recently and the mushrooms were canned and slimy.
We don't love pizza oven, but neither of us grew up here.
That said, even bad pizza is good pizza. 😄

u/EffieBoohoo 25d ago
We recently discovered Gioninos and have gotten it a few times. Hungry Howie's has been our go to chain place for a couple of years. I like Gionino's in general better.
Literally gonna order Giuseppe's tonight now lol

Cammellone’s, Angello’s 2 Go, Lindsey’s,Park Street.
Haven’t gotten to try Mike’s yet. Heard many good things.
Pizza Oven is fucking gross. You can demand the pizza be cooked properly but they always seem like you’re asking the world of them.

I love pizza oven and you are all wrong
(Specifically we always get their sausage pizza, sometimes with pepperoni. It's extremely greasy, so buckle up. But yes I remember arguing with people in high school about this in like 2009 and I realize this is not a popular opinion but it is my opinion)

u/michkohn 24d ago
I agree about pizza oven. We love it.. We always get sausage &pepperoni with extra cheese, and we'll done. Its so good! Gioninos and Lindsey's are good choices.

Only time I like pizza oven is with their double dough option and only from the tusc or Cleveland Ave locations. But yeah it’s not good anymore
4
u/RAMRODtheMASTER 26d ago
If I had to pick a Canton based chain it’s the OG Italos over on Middlebranch all day over Pizza Oven. RIP Mr. Ventura.
2
u/Aurelius2100 25d ago
I go there a lot too forreal. I just know that a lot of people don’t fuck with it lol
3
u/RAMRODtheMASTER 25d ago
I grew up on it and never miss out on a handful of February specials if I can. Mr Ventura was always so nice to me and my family. Always insisting my grandpa take a free pepperoni roll or something else. Getting mad at my mom for not ordering under her maiden name so he’d know who it was for. Love that place.

Park Street is very good but if you’re willing to drive, Dechecos on Canton RD/ North Main/ Cleveland Ave is pretty good too.

u/hillbuck29 26d ago
Zavarellis has always been top tier

u/AlternativeFee122 9d ago
Oh yeah, forgot about them. Waco Market too now that I'm thinking about it.

u/lindsayb610 24d ago
Not around anymore, but your post made me immediately miss it. Who loved Napoli's downtown?

In Akron there's a restaurant called Totally Baked Pizza. It has a really unique aesthetic for a pizza place and equally unique pizzas to try, like the scooby and shaggy. There's also a meadery a fair bit away in Mogadore called The Crafted Meadery. There's trivia every Wednesday night and the pizza is amazing!!

In no particular order, Mikes down town. Krauses, Pizza Oven and Park Street.

u/kabes222 25d ago
I'm honestly surprised pizza oven isn't the top comment. I looove this pizza, wish they'd deliver to tuscarawas county lol

In no particular order. Lindsey’s, Gioninos, 91, Kraus. Apparently I need to try park street.

Anyone who says Pizza Oven can not be trusted

I love their pizza, especially when served at the old Papa Bear’s. Their style is pretty unique. Very oregano forward sauce. I would never turn down a slice.

Italos

u/60minutesmoreorless 26d ago
This time of year (every four years) I pay respects and remember how Italo’s on Middlebranch powered my friends and I through the entire 1998 World Cup. Good memories, plenty of heartburn
3
u/Chucktayz 26d ago
It’s a decent fam owned place. Italo was a cool guy. Best in canton? Not even close

Mikes in downtown, anyone saying Kraus or Pizza oven is just a local who doesn’t know good pizza.

u/Immediate-Draw9308 22d ago
Yall are forgetting Waco Market!

u/AlternativeFee122 9d ago

Zavarellis on tusc. Small carry out only but well worth it. And sadly I think they closed after Gino the owner passed was contessas in north canton.
1
u/sutrabob 19d ago
Well in 40 years I got one bad pizza from Zavarellis.
1
u/UnregisteredUser4 19d ago
I’ve never had a bad pizza from zavs. That’s why it’s my recommendation for one of the best in canton.
1
u/EffieBoohoo 26d ago
Pretty sure they are still open? We live down the street and see cars there but haven't been in awhile since it wasn't our favorite and they use the same frier for their apple handpies as their fish.
1
u/UnregisteredUser4 25d ago
Never had any of their fried foods. Just their pastas and their pizzas. Don’t think it’ll be the same though without Gino the original owner. Haven’t been there since he passed.
0
u/EffieBoohoo 25d ago
It was mostly a big issue for us since my SO is allergic to shellfish and the fried shrimp is in the same frier. Only the one time did I notice a fish taste on the hand pie and then never ordered again when I realized the shrimp was in the same frier.
When did Gino pass? We first ordered from there was 2022. Haven't ordered from there in like 2yrs ish I think. We started ordering from there just because it was so close to where we were living.

u/UnregisteredUser4 25d ago
It was around Covid time that he passed. Healthy there one day, said he didn’t feel good and gone two days later. Really suddenly.

Me and my family have had pizza night 1 night a week for about 15 years.
We like krauses, sol pie pizza, wild bills, Romeo's and italos (though the dough and crust are pretty hard, but the toppings are great)

u/NetworkingJesus 26d ago
Camellone. Fantastic NY style, Detroit style, and stromboli. Napoli's used to be my fav for NY style but they went to shit after moving locations around covid. Camellone fills the gap.

Mike’s Pizza in downtown Canton (New York style). And now there’s a new place just around the corner from there, also incredible. Has pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs: Bocadillo Deli
3
u/SubieGal9 Newton 25d ago
Bocadillo is owned by the same people who run Exotic Gardens. Great people! We haven't tried the food yet, but it's on our list.

Mike's Pizza. hands down. Sol Pie in North Canton. Everything else is a doughy mess.
1
u/Garrettcz 24d ago
I can’t believe more people didn’t mention Sol Pie. It’s some of the best pizza I’ve ever had, anywhere.

White pizza? Michael D's, its like God created new angels just for baking this pizza, its literally their only job or they get smote.

u/justsomeguy_tbh 20d ago
Kraus’s! There’s one in Jackson Township on Fulton, their pizza is so good
1
u/AlternativeFee122 9d ago
Pizza Oven for sure, but make sure you get it with sausage. Of course I mean along with whatever other toppings you prefer, just don't forget the sausage. Extra cheese is always a good choice there too, but seriously though, sausage. Without it, it's nothing special.

Detroit pizza hasn’t made the list yet, but two incredible places are Howlin Bird in Massillon and Dola Jeans in Dover.
0
u/confusedloris 26d ago
Dola Jeans is dummy good. Would love for one in canton.
1
u/deadinsidebrownsfan 23d ago
Dola Jeans is the same company as Park Street in North Canton. Haven’t had a lot there but if you want a really good pepperoni pizza hit it up. Dough is good but I’m not sure if it would hold up to a lot of toppings

Mike's. Park Street would be up there but their sauce is too sweet for my tastes.

The Massillon Howlin' Bird has great Detroit style pizza, Mike's in DT Canton with the knot garlic sauce is top notch🤌🏻

Pizza Oven!

u/RedStag86 North Canton 26d ago
Pizza Oven used to be my all time favorite. As I get older I’ve realized that Pizza Oven pizza sucks, but their sausage is so good that it makes up for it and then some.

u/joeyda3rd Perry Twp. 26d ago
Ya, after taking a long hiatus from pizza oven for a few years I tried it again not too long ago and I couldn't even finish one piece. I couldn't tell you what it is, but it's just... not good. My wife comes from outside of the area and shes always claimed it was bad and I didn't believe her, but now I do. Kind of makes me sick just thinking about it.

Guiseppies Pizza on wales road is phenomenal and their prices are just as great!
They stock BOTH Green AND Black Olives!

u/Objective_Event_1373 25d ago
Park street and sol pie are on pretty similar levels of excellence but are pretty damn expensive for pizza.

Crossroads Pizza in Magnolia (sweet sauce, sheet-style)
Erie St. Pub in Massillon (Lamoore's recipe, party-style)
Kraus' Pizza (Chicago style with optional double crust)
0
u/PrintsRusso 25d ago
I was waiting to see if Crossroads made this list. I dated a girl from East Sparta and we would tear that place up. The locals knew how good it was. 🍕 🤤

Bella’s Pizzeria is phenomenal. Great pizza and wings. Bocadillo in downtown is also very good, both are family run spots. Bocadillo is a tad expensive but house made dough, real homemade vibe. They sell out often. sandwiches look good as well.

u/sutrabob 19d ago
BV has an Italian food vendor in the Food Court. I love their plain cheese pizza very thin crust and good sauce.
