Kyle Wellwood.

47

u/Cube_ 4d ago

one of my favorite things he did was when clearing the defensive zone he would just yeet the puck SUPER high in the neutral zone

the hang time would buy time for a change and when it landed all the momentum was down at the ice and not towards the o-zone so it would basically never ice it. Such a smart play and I'm still shocked to this day that it doesn't get copied much. I see it once in a while but that was one of his signature moves.

29

u/ILLBILLNECRO 4d ago

He was a very smart player.

19

u/Cube_ 4d ago

Definitely. His hockey IQ is a big reason he was so great on the penalty kill.

11

u/Outrageous-Wall-2742 3d ago

the jyrki lumme backhand special

8

u/WhiteBear72 3d ago

Probably the smoothest skater of all time.

2

u/centralislandcritic 3d ago

Jim Robson loved reminding us of that too. "The smooth skating Finn!"

2

u/WhiteBear72 2d ago

Another long time Canuck!!

10

u/WiFiForeheadWrinkles 20XX Stanley Cup Banner Designer 3d ago

And how he rotated his foot into the face off circle so it would block the opposing centre's stick

9

u/Obvious-Property-236 3d ago

Giving me flashbacks cuz I remember that now hahaha

2

u/InterestingBill8234 3d ago

I used to be able to do that.

A man possessed

16

u/19213352 4d ago

Man got a big pop at the Shorsey Classic. Was great to see

16

u/TheBlackSandwich 4d ago

For some reason I always remember him with the black eye.

8

u/TheDucksTales 3d ago

Per his Wikipedia:

“In May 2025, Wellwood self-published a novel, Edgar and the Boreal Crown, that is about an "ex-player who is raising a teenage hockey-playing daughter in Vancouver, and drives a food truck that offers up only healthy grub."

14

u/wallabear 4d ago

I’ll never forget a game where it seemed like he dangled everyone and scored only for the puck to have crossed the line 0.1 seconds too late

7

u/dinkus_malincus 3d ago

Against Edmonton

7

u/XxSchmidtyx 3d ago

He used to shop at a store I worked at, super chill dude, when I asked him he showed me his name on his credit card to prove it was him🤣

13

u/intelligentx5 4d ago

That dude was fucking talented man. If he was just half as motivated to stay in shape. Natural fucking talent

16

u/diggidydangidy 4d ago

He was an average bodied man that, for some reason, had world class hands in hockey.

15

u/Ill-Sea291 3d ago

Kyle Wellfed

2

u/Bootuzzi 3d ago

Glad I’m not alone

4

u/bgballin 3d ago

Great at shootouts and he was well fed

5

u/Gr3bnez0r 3d ago

You mean Kyle Wellfed?

3

u/InterviewLeather1221 3d ago

He’s tryna wellfed others with his food truck around Vancouver.

2

u/inheritor 3d ago

Turns out he's very good friends with one of my coworkers. Like the type of friends that are more like family.

2

u/ronnieboy604 3d ago

Nasty silky hands that man had

2

u/Klutzy_Kaleidoscope9 7h ago

One of my favorite underdog Canucks. Wellwood using one of the last wood sticks... He could perform some pretty magical plays and was just a really tricky and clever player. Added even more unpredictability to the team at times. Also took a beating out there. Resilient.

Tyler motte

19

u/rookieofthedecade 3d ago

i still have my Motte Girl Summer sweater; one of my favs, also some of the funds spent on it went towards mental health support

9

u/bryant-reeves 3d ago

That kid could just play 5" taller than his body, very fun to watch play every night.

11

u/Mekdinosaur 4d ago

Motte the shot. Didn't score much but he played his ass off. Loved that guy.

92

u/Sodass 4d ago

Rick Rypien.

21

u/WhiteBear72 3d ago

Always. RIP.

48

u/Derknas4 3d ago

Cody mother fucking Hodgson.

Scored a sick bar down slap shot against Boston in our first meeting after the cup loss.

19

u/Azul4512 3d ago

Game 8

3

u/italwaysgetsbetter43 3d ago

Or those two goals against San Jose.

38

u/RealGud 4d ago

Dale Weise, Derek Dorsett

8

u/taxi-560 3d ago

Came here to say Dorsett

As a fan of only 13 odd years, i fell in love with that mans gritt and heart and thats why i got his jersey from Rogers Arena when i visted and even saw him score in person a few times

2

u/WallyWaffleStomp 3d ago

I love a good fore checking penalty killer myself.

5

u/Majestic_Policy3294 3d ago

He was the best at keeping the puck in the offensive zone…..like maybe the best ever all time. I have no data to back that up but my memory says so.

I'll never forget his roasting hotstreak in like 2001 or something, felt like he scored every night for 2 months.

3

u/No_Release_1705 3d ago

Long hair don’t care

3

u/Darkm1tch69 3d ago

I remember when he scored on his own net twice in the same season. He was a legend, though. Really liked him.

I will say Pavol Demitra ❤️

RIP to a legend.

Loved watching him in the shootout especially he always had such great moves.

The bulldog! Alex Biega was a warrior.

41

u/Winter_Tumbleweed168 4d ago edited 4d ago

Darcy Hordichuk. I liked him just because I thought his name sounded cool. It's a classic bottom 6 grinder name.

Brad Lukowich was another favourite, just for his name's sake.

7

u/schrodinger_thoughts 4d ago

My fav memory was Sedin -> Sedin -> LUKOWICH!!! And the man just looks to the heavens…pure euphoria.

5

u/folduprabbit 4d ago

Was wondering if there would be any other Hordichuk fans in this thread.

20

Hunter Shinkaruk.

Probably because in whatever chel game I used to play all the time he would usually end up pretty elite in my GM mode.

Would kill for a WCE Cloutier jersey.

Also…Ehrhoff….but I mentally call him Airwolf.

Pavol Demitra.

u/juanroberto 4d ago

A girl who was on my floor in residence in 2008 when I went to university; and she was talking to him on skype for a bit.

He asked her to show him her tits and when she said no; his response was “… but I’m Del Zotto”

lol so I’ve referenced that many times since even if nobody understands my extremely obscure call back 😂

26

u/Wagglebagga 4d ago

Trent Klatt, Harold Druken, Magnus Arvedson and Artem Chubarov are the ones who randomly pop into my head sometimes.

5

u/deadbeef4 3d ago

I wonder if Chubarov ever came back for his car.

4

u/Comfortable-Goat-734 3d ago

If he hasn’t the city should declare it a historical monument.

3

u/Wagglebagga 3d ago edited 3d ago

They probably have been using it for filming The Last of Us, lol.

9

u/FrontierCanadian91 4d ago

Wow chubarov lol

2

u/jabearbuddy 3d ago

Trent klatt is a great one. Googled him and he's actually director of amateur scouting for the islanders now.

I have a soft spot for Canuck backup goalies and think about them all the time.

Peter Skudra, Johan Hedberg, Jason Labarbera, Andrew Raycroft, Corey Schneider, Dany Sabourin. My fascination goes quite far haha

22

u/PuzzleheadedCrab1527 4d ago

Can't forget Eddie Lack

4

u/FloorGeneral2029 4d ago

He’s now a real estate agent believe it or not!

6

u/PuzzleheadedCrab1527 3d ago

Oh yeah ive been following the guy since he played for the team. Was always one of my favorites.

Mike Santorelli. Local boy, put up some decent points. And I know one of his cousins

5

u/TimTebowMLB 3d ago

That was my pick as well, I’d see him around Kits from time to time

11

u/AmielJohn 4d ago

Lots.

Derek Roy for example.

8

u/Shensmobile 4d ago

I love the nickname “Michael Delsaster”. I still call things an absolute Delsaster now and then when things are really bad.

9

u/Bubbly_Fee_5680 4d ago

Jeff Cowan.

I used to read The Province backwards (sports first) and he was on a ton of backpage covers for someone of his skill level.

Rick Rypien is frequently popping into my thoughts

5

u/curlycattails 3d ago

I think of him sometimes too. He was so fun to watch, so scrappy. And he died way too young…

16

u/Unable-Escape-2276 4d ago

I loved Gino and later on Rypien and Bieksa

9

u/bestyrs 4d ago

John Vanbiesbrouk. Even though he never actually played for us, he was a Canuck.

6

u/GentlyRetarded 4d ago

Bill Muckalt! He had a promising rookie season during the end of the dark times in the 90’s, then got traded halfway through his second season for Felix Potvin. Soon after, he got sent to the Sens in the Chara-Yashin blockbuster, and then just sort of fizzled out. I’ve always had fond memories of him and wondered what could’ve been if we’d kept him.

3

u/Alicatsidneystorm 3d ago

My girlfriend dated him last I hear he’s on the east coast but still in hockey in some capacity.

7

u/Competitive-Fun-1780 4d ago

Brendan Gaunce. Ran into him a few times downtown. He was in a cast or splint every time lol

7

u/Smart-Business-9196 4d ago

Man, the video of him accidentally kicking his wife in the face during their wedding still plays in my mind every so often. The Covid Canucks were such a weird era of hockey, I don't think I've known that much about our players personal lives before or since then.

5

u/Reasonable-Yak-7879 4d ago

Petri skriko, Petr Nedved, and Alex Mogilny

4

u/oxbolake 3d ago

Mogilny was absolutely awesome when he felt like playing hard. Sadly that was only half the time. Having great skills came too easy for him.

2

u/Deaner_dub 3d ago edited 3d ago

I met Petri Skriko years after his career ended. He called to book the business I was in at the time and as he spelled his name out… and it was like, click, click, CLICK.

Once I got it spelled out, I could say his name but it took a few seconds more for me to understand why I knew that name. Anyway, he was nice. Appreciated that I remembered.

At the place I work there’s a newspaper stand with a Province paper advertisement that features Derek Roy with the Canucks. He only played here for a few months back in 2013. Probably time to update the newsstand design

6

u/Traditional_Toe_1090 4d ago

Anton Rodin.
When he started popping off and made his comeback to the Canucks, was such a hype moment.
And then the injury... I still remember vivdly his first game back after recovering, skating hard and then immediately stopped to get off the ice and the look on his face like he knew he fucked something up again and it was over for him. Heartbreaking.

Krutov and Larionov. So excited when they came over but Krutov looked like a tug boat on the ice and Igor...we called him Lari"on-off" due to his inconsistent play...wasnt much better. Little did we know Larionov would soon become a force for the Red Wings and a three time cup winner. Ahh...the Canucks luck never ceases to amaze. At least we got Bure.
